Numerical simulations (finite-difference time domain) are compared to experimental results of ultrasound wave propagation through human trabecular bones. Three-dimensional high-resolution microcomputed tomography reconstructions served as input geometry for the simulation. The numerical simulation took into account scattering, but not absorption. Simulated and experimental values of the attenuation coefficients (alpha, dB/cm) and the normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation (nBUA, dB/cm/MHz) were measured and compared on a set of 28 samples. While experimental and simulated nBUA values were highly correlated (R(2)=0.83), and showed a similar dependence with bone volume fraction, the simulation correctly predicted experimental nBUA values only for low bone volume fraction (BV/TV). Attenuation coefficients were underestimated by the simulation. The absolute difference between experimental and simulated alpha values increased with both BV/TV and frequency. As a function of frequency, the relative difference between experimental and simulated alpha values decreased from 60% around 400 kHz to 30% around 1.2 MHz. Under the assumption that the observed discrepancy expresses the effect of the absorption, our results suggests that nBUA and its dependence on BV/TV can be mostly explained by scattering, and that the relative contribution of scattering to alpha increases with frequency, becoming predominant (>50 %) over absorption for frequencies above 600 kHz.  相似文献

It was reported in a previous study that simulated guided wave axial transmission velocities on two-dimensional (2D) numerically reproduced geometry of long bones predicted moderately real in vitro ultrasound data on the same bone samples. It was also shown that fitting of ultrasound velocity with simple analytical model yielded a precise estimate (UTh) for true cortical bone thickness. This current study expands the 2D bone model into three dimensions (3D). To this end, wave velocities and UTh were determined from experiments and from time-domain finite-difference simulations of wave propagation, both performed on a collection of 10 human radii (29 measurement sites). A 3D numerical bone model was developed with tuneable fixed material properties and individualized geometry based on X-ray computed tomography reconstructions of real bones. Simulated UTh data were in good accordance (root-mean-square error was 0.40 mm; r(2)=0.79, p<0.001) with true cortical thickness, and hence the measured phase velocity can be well estimated by using a simple analytical inversion model also in 3D. Prediction of in vitro data was improved significantly (by 10% units) and the upgraded bone model thus explained most of the variability (up to 95% when sites were carefully matched) observed in in vitro ultrasound data.  相似文献

Nonlinear resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (NRUS) is a resonance-based technique exploiting the significant nonlinear behavior of damaged materials. In NRUS, the resonant frequency(ies) of an object is studied as a function of the excitation level. As the excitation level increases, the elastic nonlinearity is manifest by a shift in the resonance frequency. This study shows the feasibility of this technique for application to damage assessment in bone. Two samples of bovine cortical bone were subjected to progressive damage induced by application of mechanical cycling. Before cycling commenced, and at each step in the cycling process, NRUS was applied for damage assessment. For independent assessment of damage, high-energy x-ray computed tomography imaging was performed but was only useful in identifying the prominent cracks. As the integral quantity of damage increased, NRUS revealed a corresponding increase in the nonlinear response. The measured change in nonlinear response is much more sensitive than the change in linear modulus. The results suggest that NRUS could be a potential tool for micro-damage assessment in bone. Further work must be carried out for a better understanding of the physical nature of damaged bone and for the ultimate goal of the challenging in vivo implementation of the technique.  相似文献

The conformations of three analogues of baclofen 1: phaclofen, saclofen, and hydroxy-saclofen 2–4, potent GABAB antagonists, in solution (D2O) are estimated from high-resolution (300 MHz) H NMR coupling data. Conformations and populations of conformers are calculated by means of a modified Karplus-like relationship for the vicinal coupling constants. H NMR spectral analysis evidences how 1–3 keep in solution the preferred a conformation around C3-C4 bond. A partial rotation is set up around C2–C3 bond (the conformations about C2–C3 are all highly populated in solution) particularly for 2 and 3 while 1 shows a relative preferred a conformation. By studying the structure of the discrete kernel of the linear acoustic operator discretized with a Godunov scheme, we clearly explain why the behaviour of the Godunov scheme applied to the linear wave equation deeply depends on the space dimension and, especially, on the type of mesh. This approach allows us to explain why, in the periodic case, the Godunov scheme applied to the resolution of the compressible Euler or Navier–Stokes system is accurate at low Mach number when the mesh is triangular or tetrahedral and is not accurate when the mesh is a 2D (or 3D) cartesian mesh. This approach confirms also the fact that a Godunov scheme remains accurate when it is modified by simply centering the discretization of the pressure gradient.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of finding a minimum cost mapping between two unordered trees which induces a graph with a minimum number of connected components. A waveguide SIS heterodyne receiver using a Nb/AlOX/Nb junction has been built for astronomical observations of molecular transitions in the frequency range 600 GHz - 635 GHz, and has been successfully used at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO). We report double sideband (DSB) receiver noise temperatures as low as 245 K at 600 GHz -610 GHz, and near 300 K over the rest of the bandwidth. These results confirm that SIS quasiparticle mixers work well at submillimeter-wave frequencies corresponding to photon energies of at least 90% of the superconductor energy gap. In addition, we have systematically investigated the effect on the receiver performance of the overlap between first-order and second-order photon steps of opposite sign at these frequencies. The receiver noise increases by as much as 40% in the region of overlap. We infer potential limitations for operating submillimeter-wave Nb/AlOx/Nb mixers.  相似文献
