A study of nuclear disintegrations caused by α-particles of primary cosmic radiation with energies > 5 BeV per nucleon, has been carried out. In a systematic survey in nuclear emulsions using ‘along the track’ scanning method, 479 α-particles with a total track length of 40·84 metres and 242 interactions were obtained. From the angular distribution of shower particles associated with these interactions, a procedure has been found for distinguishing protons, which originally formed part of the incident α-particle and which have not taken part in the interaction, from other charged particles. The mean free path for nuclear interaction in G-5 emulsion is found to be 17·5±1·1 cm. (68·9±4·3 gm./cm.2). Assigning both to the incident α-particle and to the target nuclei a radius R=r oA1/2, one obtains an effective nuclear radiusr o=1·13±0·04 ×10?13 cm. Using the number of protons emerging from disintegrations of heavy nuclei (Silver and Bromine) without having participated in the interaction (as can be deduced from the angular distribution) and assuming spherical nuclei of uniform density, the mean free path of nucleons in nuclear matter is calculated to be less than 3·2×10?13 cm.  相似文献

We describe in this paper measurements made on the decay products of 11 τ-mesons observed in large nuclear emulsion block detectors. Out of the 33 charged decay products; 27 have been arrested in the block, and were identified as π-mesons. The charge of the τ-meson was found to be positive in 6 cases. In one case the charge of the τ-meson is possibly negative and in 4 cases it could not be determined. Omitting one τ-meson in which a high energy γ-ray is emitted and which has been reported earlier1 the weighted mean Q-value of the remaining 10 τ-mesons is:

Interferometric studies have been made on cotton fibers as well as on twisted nylon filaments. The results so obtained provide strong evidence that the fibrils in the cotton fiber become less inclined to the fiber axis as one proceeds from the surface to the core. Also, studies on twisted nylon filaments by the fiber refractometer and Becke line techniques indicate that the latter, as practiced in this laboratory, does give values of refractive index which are heavily weighted towards the fiber periphery.  相似文献

Metal complexes are synthesized with Schiff bases derived from o-phthalaldehyde (opa) and amino acids viz., glycine (gly) l-alanine (ala), l-phenylalanine (pal). Metal ions coordinate in a tetradentate or hexadentate manner with these N(2)O(2) donor ligands, which are characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic moments, IR, electronic, (1)H NMR and EPR spectral studies. The elemental analysis suggests the stoichiometry to be 1:1 (metal:ligand). Based on EPR studies, spin-Hamiltonian and bonding parameters have been calculated. The g-values calculated for copper complexes at 300K and in frozen DMSO (77K) indicate the presence of the unpaired electron in the dx2-y2 orbital. The evaluated metal-ligand bonding parameters showed strong in-plane sigma- and pi-bonding. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron micrography (SEM) analysis provide the crystalline nature and the morphology of the metal complexes. The cyclic voltammograms of the Cu(II)/Mn(II)/VO(II) complexes investigated in DMSO solution exhibit metal centered electroactivity in the potential range -1.5 to +1.5V. The electrochemical data obtained for Cu(II) complexes explains the change of structural arrangement of the ligand around Cu(II) ions. The biological activity of the complexes has been tested on eight bacteria and three fungi. Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes show an increased activity in comparison to the controls. The metal complexes of opapal Schiff base were evaluated for their DNA cleaving activities with calf-thymus DNA (CT DNA) under aerobic conditions. Cu(II) and VO(II) complexes show more pronounced activity in presence of the oxidant.  相似文献

Structural and optical properties of Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) thin films stacked with multiple Lead Selenide (PbSe) submonolayers (ML) were studied. Thermal evaporation was preferred to produce ZnSe–PbSe thin films with the PbSe ML thickness ranges from 2.5 to 10 nm. Polycrystalline nature of the ZnSe was revealed through high resolution X-ray diffractometer measurement. The development of micro strain at the interfaces with increasing PbSe ML thickness was observed. A cross-sectional TEM image shows well-ordered periodicity and reproducibility of the layer thickness. The enhancement of optical absorption of ZnSe was identified upon stacking of PbSe ML. The evidence for quantum confinement in PbSe ML was revealed by the obtained red shift in band gap (2.5–1.8 eV) values as well as photoluminescence emission at 1,071 nm. The presence of tensile strain in the ZnSe layers upon staking of PbSe ML was discussed by the shift in LO phonon modes in Raman spectra.  相似文献
