One of the most important and distinguishing features of multimedia applications is the integration of multiple media streams that have to be presented in a synchronized fashion. In this paper, a queueing system with a special service mechanism arising in multimedia synchronization is considered. The system is characterized by arrival of two types of customers (media streams), and servicing of customers (processing of packets) in pairs with one customer from each type for a pair. The exact transient system size probabilities are obtained as the stationary solutions do not exist for this system and these are illustrated numerically. The quality of a finite element solution has been shown to be affected by the quality of the underlying mesh. A poor mesh may lead to unstable and/or inaccurate finite element approximations. Mesh quality is often characterized by the “smoothness” or “shape” of the elements (triangles in 2-D or tetrahedra in 3-D). Most automatic mesh generators produce an initial mesh where the aspect ratio of the elements are unacceptably high. In this paper, a new approach to produce acceptable quality meshes from a topologically valid initial mesh is presented. Given an initial mesh (nodal coordinates and element connectivity), a “smooth” final mesh is obtained by solving a constrained optimization problem. The variables for the iterative optimization procedure are the nodal coordinates (excluding, the boundary nodes) of the finite element mesh, and appropriate bounds are imposed on these to prevent an unacceptable finite element mesh. Examples are given of the application of the above method for 2- and 3-D meshes generated using
automatic mesh generators. Results indicate that the new method not only yields better quality elements when compared with the traditional Laplacian smoothing, but also guarantees a valid mesh unlike the Laplacian method. 相似文献

Speech is usually produced in an upright sitting or standing posture. Measurements and judgments of speech may be made in conditions requiring a supine position, however. These conditions include MRI recordings, and oral procedures, such as, adjustments to dental appliances, medical and surgical procedures. It is of interest, therefore, to see whether gravity has strong or systematic effects on tongue behavior. In the present study, 13 subjects repeated several words, which contained extreme consonant and vowel tongue positions, during upright and supine condition. Ultrasound imaging provided midsagittal tongue contours, in each condition, for comparison. A neck brace was used to stabilize transducer placement and the palate was used as a physiological reference to register the data sets. Results showed a significant subject effect. In supine position the tongue was more posterior than upright for seven subjects, more anterior for two subjects and varied by phoneme for four subjects. However, there was no significant phoneme effect. The direction of change and the amount of change were not directly related. Most subjects had small upright-supine differences. The largest differences, less than 3 mm on average, were in the posterior tongue. 相似文献

In this work, a theoretical study of the coupling of TM polarized subterahertz (THz) radiation with periodic semiconductor rectangular slot arrays was conducted, using InSb as an example. Simulation results showed that the structure with 4-12 microm thickness provides over a 20-30-fold increase in the electric field at slot edges in a nanosize region ( approximately 500 nm). The enhancement of the THz electromagnetic field extends across the slots and reaches peak values at the edges due to discontinuity effects. Because of the strong local electromagnetic field enhancement, the structure can potentially be used for the development of novel biophotonic sensors, leading to improved detection sensitivity. 相似文献

A novel collision strategy has been implemented for simulation of particulate flows using a Lagrange multiplier/fictitious domain method. Asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGPR) is one of the recognition motifs on the surface of hepatocytes, which promote their adhesion to extracellular matrix in liver tissue and appropriate artificial surfaces. ASGPR-mediated adhesion is expected to minimize trans-differentiation of hepatocytes in vitro that is generally observed in integrin-mediated adhesion. The aim of the present study is to verify the role of ASGPR in hepatocyte adhesion and proliferation in scaffolds for hepatic tissue engineering. Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM) is emerging as a suitable non-invasive analytical tool due to its high sensitivity and capability to correlate the morphology and activity of live cells. HepG2 cells and rat primary hepatocytes cultured in Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/Gelatin hydrogel scaffolds with and without galactose (a ligand for ASGPR) modification are studied using SECM. Systematic investigation of live cells cultured for different durations in scaffolds of different compositions (9:1 and 8:2 PVA:Gelatin with and without galactose) reveals significant improvement in cell–cell communication and proliferation on galactose incorporated scaffolds, thereby demonstrating the positive influence of ASGPR-mediated adhesion. In this work, we have also developed a methodology to quantify the respiratory activity and intracellular redox activity of live cells cultured in porous tissue engineering scaffolds. Using this methodology, SECM results are compared with routine cell culture assays viz., MTS ((1-Oxyl-2,2,5,5,-tetramethyl-Δ3-pyrroline-3-methyl) Methanethiosulfonate) and Albumin assays to demonstrate the better sensitivity of SECM. In addition, the present study demonstrates SECM as a reliable and sensitive tool to monitor the activity of live cells cultured in scaffolds for tissue engineering, which could be used on a routine basis. 相似文献

The transformation of renewable biomass into valuable products as alternatives to fossil fuels is essential for sustainable energy in sustainable society. This work systematically investigates the pyrolysis of sorghum bagasse biomass into bio-char and bio-oil products and studies the effect of temperature (623–823 K) on the conversion of sorghum bagasse and products yields. The physicochemical properties of bio-char were thoroughly studied using powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis (CHNSO), scanning electronic microscope, calorific value (CV), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy techniques. Also, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), CV, and FTIR were used to understand the properties of bio-oil. The results obtained indicate that an increase in the pyrolysis temperature from 623 to 823 K leads to a decrease in the bio-char yield from 42.55 to 30.38%. On the other hand, the maximum bio-oil yield of 15.94% was obtained at 723 K. The bio-char obtained at 673 and 773 K was found by FTIR analysis to be composed of a highly ordered aromatic carbon structure. The calorific value of bio-oil, which contains a greater amount of acidic compounds, was found to be 6740 kcal/kg. The GC–MS analyses revealed the presence of octadecenoic acid, p-cresol, 2,6-dimethoxy phenol, 4-ethyl 2-methoxy phenol, phenol, o-guaiacol, and octadecanoic acid in the bio-oil obtained from the pyrolysis of sorghum bagasse biomass.
