Corrigendum to the paper ``Adjoining an Order Unit to a Matrix Ordered Space'

An error has been detected (and also corrected) in Theorem 2.8 of the paper entitled “Adjoining an Order Unit to a Matrix Ordered Space” (Positivity, (2005)9: 207–223; DOI ). Accordingly, some of the results of the paper have been modified. Also, a notion of C*-matricially, Riesz normed spaces has been introduced.     

Flow-injection spectrophotometric determination of residual free chlorine and chloramine

2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine has been suggested as a new reagent for the flow-injection spectrophotometric determination of residual chlorine based on its oxidation to 2,4-dinitrophenyldiazonium ion. The measurement of the decrease in colour intensity under reversed flow-injection (reagent injection) conditions has been used for the determination of 0.1–10 mg/l Cl present as free or combined chlorine, and for its speciation. The limit of detection was 0.05 mg/l Cl. Copper (II), iron (III) and many other ions have been found not to vitiate the results.     

Environment-induced decoherence II. Effect of decoherence on Bell''s inequality for an EPR pair

According to Bell's theorem, the degree of correlation between spatially separated measurements on a quantum system is limited by certain inequalities if one assumes the condition of locality. Quantum mechanics predicts that this limit can be exceeded, making it nonlocal. We analyse the effect of an environment modelled by a fluctuating magnetic field on the quantum correlations in an EPR singlet as seen in the Bell inequality. We show that in an EPR setup, the system goes from the usual ‘violation’ of Bell's inequality to a ‘non-violation’ for times larger than a characteristic time scale which is related to the parameters of the fluctuating field. We also look at these inequalities as a function of the spatial separation between the EPR pair.     

Partitioning arrangements of lines II: Applications

In this paper we present efficient deterministic algorithms for various problems involving lines or segments in the plane, using the partitioning algorithm described in a companion paper [A3]. These applications include: (i) anO(m ^2/3 n ^2/3 · log^2/3 n · log^/3 (m/n)+(m+n) logn) algorithm to compute all incidences betweenm points andn lines, where is a constant <3.33; (ii) anO(m ^2/3 n ^2/3 · log^5/3 n · log^/3 (m/n)+(m+n) logn) algorithm to computem faces in an arrangement ofn lines; (iii) anO(n ^4/3 log^(+2)/3 n) algorithm to count the number of intersections in a set ofn segments; (iv) anO(n ^4/3 log^{( + 2)/3} n) algorithm to count red-blue intersections between two sets of segments, and (v) anO(n ^3/2 log^/3 n) algorithm to compute spanning trees with low stabbing number for a set ofn points. We also present an algorithm that, given set ofn points in the plane, preprocesses it, in timeO(nm log^+1/2 n), into a data structure of sizeO(m) forn lognmn ², so that the number of points ofS lying inside a query triangle can be computed inO((n/m) log^3/2 n) time.Work on this paper has been supported by Office of Naval Research Grant N00014-87-K-0129, by National Science Foundation Grant DCR-83-20085, and by grants from the Digital Equipment Corporation and the IBM Corporation. Synthesis and spectral studies on nickel(II) complexes of amide group-containing ligands

Summary Complexes of nickel(II) with N-(2-carboxyphenyl)benzamide (CPBH), 2-amino-N-(2-carboxyphenyl)benzamide (ACPBH), N-isoxazolyl benzamide (IB), N-anilinobenzamide (AB), N-(2-pyridyl)-3-carboxypropanamide (PCPA) and N-(2-pyridyl)-2-carboxybenzamide (PCBA) have been isolated and characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility measurements, thermal studies, i.r. and electronic spectral studies. The electrochemical behaviour of some complexes has also been investigated.     

Kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation of acetaldehyde by chromic acid in perchloric acid

Summary The oxidation of MeCHO by chromium(VI) has been studied in HClO₄ medium over a wide range of experimental conditions and has been found to obey the rate law;v=k[MeCHO][HCrO ₄ ^– ][H⁺]. The calculated H and-S values for the reaction are 30±2kJ mol^–1 and 171±7J mol^–1deg^–1, respectively. The mechanism is discussed in terms of carbon-hydrogen bond cleavage.
