Recent results from PHOBOS on particle production at high p T

A selection of experimental results from the PHOBOS Collaboration relevant for probing high-energy nuclear collisions with high transverse momentum particles is presented. The inclusive yields of charged particles and comparisons between nuclear and elementary collisions already reveal a large amount of parton energy loss in the hot and dense medium created in heavy ion collisions. Remarkable scaling and factorization features are observed, unifying the data taken at various collision energies, centralities and nuclear sizes. To further analyze the nature of the energy loss, a measurement of pseudorapidity (Δη) and azimuthal angle (Δφ) correlations between high transverse momentum charged hadrons (p _T >2.5 GeV/c) and all associated charged particles is presented at both short-range (small Δη) and long-range (large Δη) over a continuous detector acceptance covering −4<Δη<2. Various near- and away-side features of the correlation structure are discussed as a function of centrality in Au + Au collisions at  GeV. The results provide new information about the longitudinal (Δη) extent of the near-side ‘ridge’ structure, first observed by the STAR Collaboration over a narrower η range. In central Au + Au collisions the ridge structure extends to at least Δη=4, and its strength completely diminishes as collisions become more peripheral. Fluorescence of Zinc Complex with N,N'-Bis(5-Bromosalicylidene)Ethylenediamine

Infrared (IR) spectra of a number of crystals with proton conductivity have been investigated. The width of the band gap is determined, and most lines of the IR absorption spectra are identified. A direct proof of the existence of protons, defects ОН–and Н₃О⁺, molecules of adsorbed and crystallization water in the crystals grown in ordinary and in heavy water is also carried out. The transparency of the rectangular potential barrier for protons is calculated, and the possibility of tunneling and translational diffusion of protons in wide-band-gap crystals is shown.

Effects of the disaccharide concentration and the extrusion speed on the size of unilamella vesicles

We investigated the effects of the concentration of disaccharides (trehalose, maltose, and sucrose) and the extrusion speed on the mean size of the unilamella vesicles (ULVs) by using the photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS). We found that the mean diameters of ULVs prepared in the solution with the same disaccharide concentration and the same extrusion speed were quite different. In the case of trehalose, the mean diameter of ULVs decreased as the disaccharide concentration decreased and the extrusion speed increased. Based on those findings, we could fabricate the uniform sized ULVs in different disaccharide solutions with the same concentration by controlling the extrusion speed.     

Dynamics of Optical Pulse Propagation in the Ribbon Formed by Graphene and Boron Nitride Layers of Finite Width

The propagation of an ultrashort optical pulse in the multilayered structure formed by alternating graphene and boron nitride layers is considered. Conduction electrons of this system at low temperatures are described by the effective long-wavelength Hamiltonian, and the electromagnetic field is considered based on the classical Maxwell equations. Dependence of the evolution on the ultrashort pulse amplitude and nanoribbon layer width is established.     

Fluorescence diagnostics of metastatic lesion of regional lymph nodes upon surgical treatment of breast cancer

We have performed intraoperative fluorescence diagnostics of 60 patients for metastases of breast cancer to regional lymph nodes. All the patients were divided into two groups. The first group consisted of 50 patients, which were surgically treated at the first stage. The second group consisted of ten patients, which underwent combined treatment. At the first stage, they received from two to four courses of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and, at the second stage, the surgical intervention was performed. The intraoperative fluorescence diagnostics was performed using the preparation alasens (precursor of protoporphyrin IX in the human organism). The occurrence of fluorescence of alasens-induced protoporphyrin IX was determined visually and using the local fluorescence spectroscopy method. Altogether, 498 lymph nodes were examined: 408 in the first group and 90 in the second one. For the first group, the sensitivity of the method was found to be 87.2%, and its specificity, 94.8%; in the second group, these parameters were determined to be 77 and 78%, respectively. The first experience of the application of the intraoperative fluorescence diagnostics of metastatic lesion of lymph nodes in patients with breast cancer has shown its high efficiency and application potential.
