The self‐similar tree topology in open dissipative systems is formed as a result of self‐organization and found in various examples, such as river networks, blood vessels, vascular organizations in plants, and even lightning. It is generally assumed that the tree organization is a result of a dynamic process that minimizes the dissipation of energy. Here, we argue that inherent randomness is a sufficient condition for the generation of tree patterns under evolutionary dynamics and the decrease of energy expenditure is not the cause but a consequent signature. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report a facile way of preparing microfluidic channels filled with electrospun functional fibers. Patterned elastic molds were in tight contact with electrospun fiber mats without any leak of the analyte solution. As an example of the simple devices, we demonstrated a microfluidic protein chip selectively purifying histidine‐tagged proteins. Highly mesoporous nitrilotriacetic acid‐functionalized polystyrene (PS‐NTA) fibers were produced by taking advantage of interpenetrating phase separation between PS and PEO during electrospinning. The specific interaction of Ni‐complexed PS‐NTA fibers with histidine enabled us to immobilize only target proteins from highly heterogeneous protein mixtures. The easy process to fabricate functionalized microchannels combined with the high production throughput from electrospinning may greatly contribute to chip‐based chromatographic and bioanalytical devices. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For minimizing systemic experimental variation in the analysis of antibody array data, we developed a novel median-centered/IgM-tagged-internal standard (TIS) assay normalization using median-centering and TIS assay-based determination of serum IgM concentrations. We evaluated five normalization methods by analyzing correlation coefficients and coefficients of variation for six serum proteins using human serum samples from normal controls (n = 25) and patients with liver cirrhosis (n = 25) or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC; n = 29). Median-centered normalization improved correlation coefficients, while IgM-based normalizations improved coefficients of variation. The TIS assay was more efficient, economical, and reproducible for determining IgM concentrations than enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Additionally, we normalized antibody array data for six serum proteins using the median-centered/IgM-TIS assay, and evaluated serum biomarkers through distribution analysis of normalized fluorescence intensities and receiver operating characteristic analyses for the diagnosis of liver cirrhosis and HCC. Apolipoprotein A-1 and a combination of alpha-fetoprotein and C-reactive protein were determined to be potential serological biomarkers for liver cirrhosis and HCC, respectively. Thus, median-centered/IgM-TIS assay normalization is a useful approach for analyzing antibody array data and evaluating serological biomarkers for the diagnosis of liver disease or cancers.  相似文献

The paper deals with a dynamical system analysis related to phantom cosmological model. Here gravity is coupled to phantom scalar field having scalar coupling function and a potential. The field equations are reduced to an autonomous dynamical system by a suitable redefinition of the basic variables and assuming some suitable form of the potential function. The real time changes occurring within films of cylinder-forming poly(α-methylstyrene-block-4-hydroxystyrene) (PαMS-b-PHOST) were monitored as they were swollen in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and acetone solvent vapors. In situ information was obtained by combining grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) with film thickness monitoring of the solvent vapor swollen films. We show that for self assembly to occur, the polymer thin film must surpass a swollen thickness ratio of 212% of its original thickness when swollen in THF vapors and a ratio of 268% for acetone vapor annealing. As the polymer becomes plasticized by solvent vapor uptake, the polymer chains must become sufficiently mobile to self assemble, or reorganize, at room temperature. Using vapors of a solvent selective to one of the blocks, in our case PHOST-selective acetone, an order-order transition occured driven by the shift in volume fraction. The BCC spherical phase assumed in the highly swollen state can be quenched by rapid drying. Upon treatment with vapor of a non-selective solvent, THF, the film maintained the cylindrical morphology suggested by its dry-state volume fraction. In situ studies indicate that self-assembly occurs spontaneously upon attaining the threshold swelling ratios.  相似文献

To elucidate the genes responsible for constitutive human skin color, we measured the extent of skin pigmentation in the buttock, representative of lifelong non-sun-exposed skin, and conducted a gene mapping study on skin color in an isolated Mongolian population composed of 344 individuals from 59 families who lived in Dashbalbar, Mongolia. The heritability of constitutive skin color was 0.82, indicating significant genetic association on this trait. Through the linkage analysis using 1,039 short tandem repeat (STR) microsatellite markers, we identified a novel genomic region regulating constitutive skin color on 11q24.2 with an logarithm of odds (LOD) score of 3.39. In addition, we also found other candidate regions on 17q23.2, 6q25.1, and 13q33.2 (LOD ≥ 2). Family-based association tests on these regions with suggestive linkage peaks revealed ten and two significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on the linkage regions of chromosome 11 and 17, respectively. We were able to discover four possible candidate genes that would be implicated to regulate human skin color: ETS1, UBASH3B, ASAM, and CLTC.  相似文献

We investigate solvent viscosity and polarity effects on the photoisomerization of the protonated and deprotonated forms of two analogues of the photoactive yellow protein (PYP) chromophore. These are trans-p-hydroxybenzylidene acetone and trans-p-hydroxyphenyl cinnamate, studied in solutions of different polarity and viscosity at room temperature, by means of femtosecond fluorescence up-conversion. The fluorescence lifetimes of the protonated forms are found to be barely sensitive to solvent viscosity, and to increase with increasing solvent polarity. In contrast, the fluorescence decays of the deprotonated forms are significantly slowed down in viscous media and accelerated in polar solvents. These results elucidate the dramatic influence of the protonation state of the PYP chromophore analogues on their photoinduced dynamics. The viscosity and polarity effects are, respectively, interpreted in terms of different isomerization coordinates and charge redistribution in S(1). A trans-to-cis isomerization mechanism involving mainly the ethylenic double-bond torsion and/or solvation is proposed for the anionic forms, whereas "concerted" intramolecular motions are proposed for the neutral forms.  相似文献

<正>We propose a scheme to prepare the Bell states for atomic qubits trapped in separate optical cavities via atom-cavity-laser interaction.The quantum information of each qubit is encoded on the degenerate ground states of the atom,so the entanglement between them is relatively stable against spontaneous emission.The proposed scheme consists of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer(MZI) with two arms,and each arm contains a cavity with an N-type atom in it.It requires two classical fields and a single-photon source. By controlling the sequence and time of atom-cavity-laser interaction,the deterministic production of the atomic Bell states is shown.We also introduce the generalization of the present scheme to generate the 2N-atom Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state.  相似文献
