The kinetics of thermal polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by the redox system Mn(III)–glycerol was studied in aqueous sulfuric acid in the temperature range of 30–40°C, and the rates of polymerization, Rp, and Mn3+ disappearance, etc., were measured. The effect of certain water-miscible organic solvents and certain cationic and anionic surfactants on the rates of polymerization has been investigated. A mechanism involving the formation of a complex between Mn3+ and glycerol whose decomposition yields the initiating free radical with the polymerization being terminated by the metal ion has been suggested.  相似文献

The aqueous polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by an acidified bromate–thiourea redox system has been studied under nitrogen atmosphere. The rate of polymerization is independent of thiourea concentration over the range 2–9 × 10?3M and reaches maximum at 9 × 10?3M. The rate varies linearly with [monomer]. The initial rate of polymerization as well as the maximum conversion increases within the range of 4–22.5 × 10?3M KBrO3, but beyond 22.5 × 10?3M the rate of polymerization decreases. The initial rate and the limiting conversion increases with increasing polymerization temperature in the range 30–45°C; and beyond 45°C they decrease. The effect of certain neutral salts, water-soluble solvents, and micelles of cationic, anionic, and nonionic surfactants on the rate of polymerization has been investigated.  相似文献

Graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto wool was investigated in aqueous solution using the potassium peroxy-diphosphate-thiourea redox system as the initiator. The rate of grafting was determined by varying the monomer, peroxydi-phosphate ion, temperature, and solvent. The graft yield increases with increasing peroxydiphosphate ion up to 80 × 10?-4 mol/L, and with further increase of peroxydiphosphate ion the graft yield decreases. The graft yield increases with increasing monomer concentration. The percentage of grafting decreases with increasing thiourea concentration. The rate of grafting increases with an increase of temperature. The effect of acid and water-soluble solvent and certain salts on graft yield has been investigated and a suitable rate expression has been derived.  相似文献

Living anionic polymerization of an acetal protected 4‐hydroxystyrene monomer, (4‐(2‐tetrahydropyranyloxy)styrene) (OTHPSt), and the chain extension of the poly(OTHPSt) anion with a variety of monomers including styrene, 4‐tert‐butylstyrene, methacryloyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (MAPOSS) and hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane is demonstrated. The P(OTHPSt) homopolymer has a glass transition temperature well above room temperature, which facilitates handling and purification of the protected poly(4‐hydroxystyrene) (PHS). The resulting diblock copolymers have narrow dispersities <1.05. Chemoselective mild deprotection conditions for the P(OTHPSt) block were identified to prevent simultaneous degradation of the MAPOSS or dimethylsiloxane (DMS) block, thus allowing for the first reported synthesis of P(HS‐b‐DMS) and P(HS‐b‐MAPOSS). © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), also called marrow stromal cells, are adult cells that have attracted interest for their potential uses in therapeutic applications. There is a pressing need for scalable culture systems due to the large number of cells needed for clinical treatments. Here, a tailorable thin polymer coating—poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate‐ran‐vinyl dimethyl azlactone‐ran‐glycidyl methacrylate) [P(PEGMEMA‐r‐VDM‐r‐GMA); PVG]—to the surface of commercially available polystyrene and glass microcarriers to create chemically defined surfaces for large‐scale cell expansion is applied. These chemically defined microcarriers create a reproducible surface that does not rely on the adsorption of xenogenic serum proteins to mediate cell adhesion. Specifically, this coating method anchors PVG copolymer through ring opening nucleophilic attack by amine residues on poly‐l ‐lysine that is pre‐adsorbed to the surface of microcarriers. Importantly, this anchoring reaction preserves the monomer VDM reactivity for subsequent functionalization with an integrin‐specific Arg‐Gly‐Asp peptide to enable cell adhesion and expansion via a one‐step reaction in aqueous media. MSCs cultured on PVG‐coated microcarriers achieve sixfold expansion—similar to the expansion achieved on PS microcarriers—and retain their ability to differentiate after harvesting.  相似文献

The graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto silk fibers initiated by the ferric chloride-eysteine redox system has been investigated in aqueous medium. The rate of grafting was calculated by varying the concentrations of monomer, initiator, acidity of the medium, cysteine, and temperature. The percentage of grafting increases with an increase of Fe3+ concentration up to 2,5 × 10?3 mol/L and thereafter it decreases. The graft yield increases steadily upon increasing the monomer concentration. The graft yield also increases with increasing cysteine concentration up to 0.5 × 10?3 mol/L and then decreases. The effect of the perchloric acid concentration, temperature, solvents, and certain neutral salts on graft yield has also been investigated and a suitable reaction scheme has been proposed.  相似文献

The graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto poly-(ethylene terephthalate) using metal complexes of Mn3+, Co3+, and Fe3+ as initiators was studied. The rate of polymerization, Rp, increased with increasing complex concentrations.

The rate of polymerization was also studied by varying monomer concentrations. Increasing monomer concentrations, the rate of polymerization increases significantly. The graft yield increases with increasing temperature within the range 60–75°C. The graft yield is medium dependent. A suitable kinetic scheme has been pictured and rate equations have been derived.  相似文献
