Some topics on the continuation and smoothing of vector functions

We consider problems of continuation of vector functions from a subspace to the entire space and of smoothing problems for these functions. It is shown that there exists a reflexive separable spaceX and a subspaceY such that even a very smooth mapping ofY does not extend to a uniformly continuous mapping of a neighborhood ofY.Translated fromMatematicheskie Zametki, Vol. 58, No. 6, pp. 906–916, December, 1995.     

Molecular Complexes of Crown Ethers in Crystals and Solutions

A review of the experimental and theoretical studies of the crown ether complexes with polar molecules in their crystals, solutions, and in a gas phase is given. The type of the molecular bonds in the complexes, their stoichiometry, and the change in the macrocycle conformation during complex formation are considered, as well as the effect of the macrocycle structure and the nature of the medium on the efficiency of the molecular bonding. New data are given on the enthalpies of transfer of the crown ethers from tetrachloromethane into solvents capable of forming hydrogen bonds. The enthalpies of specific interactions of macrocycles with the molecules of the solvents in the medium of the same solvents are characterized. The conformations of the crown ethers in the media under study are discussed.

Four-Dimensional Lie Group Integration of the Klein–Fock Equation

A method of four-dimensional Lie group integration of the Fock–Klein equation is described in the present paper. The method is based on the formalism of co-adjoint representation orbits and on the non-commutative integration method. Right-invariant metrics being solutions of the Einstein equation are also classified for manifolds of four-dimensional Lie groups.     

Superstable semigroups of operators

In [NR] the authors introduced the notion of superstable operators on a Banach space E using ultrapowers E_u of E. In [HR] this notion was extended to strongly continuous one-parameter semigroups again by means of ultrapowers.It is the aim of the present paper to give an equivalent intrinsic definition of superstability (without the reference to ultrapowers). This definition allows us to improve the results of [NR] as well as of [HR]. We apply our results to semigroups of positive linear operators on Banach lattices and C^*-algebras, respectively.     

Pattern Search Method for Discrete <Emphasis Type="Italic">L</Emphasis><Subscript>1</Subscript>–Approximation

We propose a pattern search method to solve a classical nonsmooth optimization problem. In a deep analogy with pattern search methods for linear constrained optimization, the set of search directions at each iteration is defined in such a way that it conforms to the local geometry of the set of points of nondifferentiability near the current iterate. This is crucial to ensure convergence. The approach presented here can be extended to wider classes of nonsmooth optimization problems. Numerical experiments seem to be encouraging. Remark on minimization of depth of Boolean circuits

It is shown that Lozhkin’s method (1981) for minimization of the depth of formulas with a bounded number of changing types of elements in paths from input to output and Hoover-Klawe-Pippenger’s method (technical report in 1981, journal publication in 1984) for minimization of the depth of circuits with unbounded branching by insertion of trees from buffers with bounded branching of outputs for each buffer are dual to each other and can be proved by one and the same method.
