Reactions of indoles with 2- and 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohols

A procedure has been proposed for the synthesis of 1H-indolylmethylphenols by reaction of hydroxybenzyl alcohols with indoles under conditions implying thermal generation of o- and p-methylenequinones. The mechanism of formation and spectral parameters of the products are discussed.     

Reactions of 6,7-dimethoxy- 3,4-dihydroisoquinoline with <Emphasis Type="Italic">o</Emphasis>-quinone methides

Products of heterocyclization, 9,10-dimethoxy-12,13-dihydro-7aH,15H-naphtho[1',2':5,6][1,3]oxazino-[2,3-a]isoquinolines, were isolated on condensing 6,7-dimethoxy-3,4-dihydroisoquinoline with 1-dimethylaminomethyl-2-naphthols. In the case of o-hydroxybenzyl alcohols products of a Michael aza reaction, 2-[(6,7-dimethoxy-3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-2(1H)-yl)methyl]phenols were obtained.     

Convenient Synthesis of 1H-Benzotriazolylalkylphenols

A simple, efficient, and environmentally benign method has been developed for the exclusive formation of synthetically significant 1H-benzotriazol-1-ylalkylphenols from hydroxybenzyl alcohols and benzotriazole.     

Facile Approach for the Synthesis of 2,3,4,9-Tetrahydro-1H-xanthen-1-ones and 8,9,10,12-Tetrahydro-11H-benzo[a]xanthen-11-ones via Trapping of o-Quinone Methides

An efficient, simple synthesis of 2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-xanthene-1-ones and 8,9,10,12-tetrahydro-11H-benzo[a]xanthen-11-ones is reported by one-pot condensation of 3-dimethylamino-2-cyclohexen-1-ones with hydroxybenzyl alcohols, phenol, and 2-naphthol Mannich bases or their quaternized derivatives. The mechanism of the reaction is believed to involve the formation of the o-quinone methide intermediate.
