Synthesis of pyrimidine derivatives using N-bis(methylthio)methylenecyanamide

N-Bis(methylthio)methylenecyanamide ( 1 ) was allowed to react with active methylene compounds (methyl cyanoacetate, dimethyl malonate, ethyl acetoacetate, ethyl phenylacetate) in the presence of potassium carbonate or potassium hydroxide in dimethyl sulfoxide followed by the treatment using appropriate a base or an acid to give the corresponding 6-methylthiouracil derivatives in 15–80% yields. These uracil derivatives are found to be useful intermediates for the synthesis of 6-aminouracils and fused pyrimidine derivatives.     

NAD(P)+-NAD(P)H models. 90. Stereoselection controlled by electronic effect of a carbonyl group in oxidation of NAD(P)H analog

4-Monodeuterated NAD(P)H model compounds (1,4,6,7-tetrahydro-1,6,11-trimethyl-5-oxo-5H-benzo[c]pyrido[2,3-e]az epin; 11Me-MMPAH) have been oxidized with a series of p-benzoquinone and its derivatives in the presence of Mg2+. The models have an axial chirality with respect to the orientation of carbonyl dipole, the dihedral angle of which is larger than 55 degrees out of the plane of dihydropyridine ring. Without Mg2+, the anti- (with respect to the carbonyl dipole) hydrogen is 3 to 32 times more reactive than the corresponding syn-hydrogen, whereas, when Mg2+ is present in the system, the selectivity is shifted toward the syn-preferency. Mg2+ plays the role of a Lewis acid catalyst to control the stereochemistry at the same time as it catalyzes the reaction.     

Evaluation of dissociation constants of ammonium ion in aqueous lithium perchlorate and lithium chloride-sodium chloride mixed solutions

The Pitzer approach has been applied to the evaluation of dissociation constants of ammonium ion in lithium perchlorate and lithium chloride-sodium chloride mixed solutions at 25°C. The calculated values showed good agreement with the observed values, provided all the higher-order interaction terms ('s and 's) concerned were introduced. The unknown (NH₄LiClO₄) value was determined from the isopiestic measurements of NH₄ClO₄–LiClO₄ mixed solutions. Parameters in the Pitzer formalism for ammonia-ion interactions involved in LiCl and NaCl media were determined by use of the activity coefficients of ammonia measured in LiCl–NaCl mixed solutions by a transpiration method.     

Determination of rare earth elements in seawater by on-line column preconcentration inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

A home made column of commercially available iminodiacetate resin, Muromac A-1 (50–100 mesh) was used to concentrate rare earth elements (REEs) (15 elements: Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) in seawater. An automated low pressure flow analysis method with on-line column preconcentration/inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is described for the determination of REEs in seawater. Sample solutions (adjusted to pH of 3.0) passed through the column. After washing the column with water, the adsorbed elements were subsequently eluted into the plasma with 0.7 M nitric acid. Calibration curves were accomplished by means of purified artificial seawater with a sample loading time of 120 s. Detection limits (DLs) of the on-line column preconcentration/ICP-MS by eight replicate operations were between 0.040 and 0.251 pg ml⁻¹ for REEs in the artificial seawater. The precision was less than 8.9% for REEs and one sample can be processed in 7 min using a 7 ml of sample. The proposed method was applied to determine REEs in coastal seawater of Hiroshima Bay, Japan.     

Organic synthesis by means of noble metal complexes—XCIV : Palladium catalyzed hydrosilylation of monoenes and conjugated dienes

Palladium compounds and metallic palladium combined with phosphine are active catalysts of selective hydrosilylation of terminal olefins. Butadiene and trichlorosilane give a 1:1 adduct and trimethylsilane affords a 1:2 adduct. Special features of the palladium catalyzed hydrosilylation reactions are presented.     

InGaAsP/InP optical waveguide switch operated by a carrier-induced change in the refractive index

Waveguided semiconductor optical switches operated by a carrier-induced change in the refractive-index associated with the plasma dispersion are proposed. InGaAsP/InP four-port switches having two intersecting single-mode channel waveguides are fabricated by selective liquid-phase epitaxy and investigated at 1.5m wavelength. Optical switching is observed as a result of mode interference in the waveguide intersection region.     

Product analyses and crosslink mechanism of plasma-polymerized methyl methacrylate

Plasma-polymerized methyl methacrylate (PPMMA) film was produced by a radio-frequency glow discharge of methyl methacrylate (MMA) gas with argon. PPMMA deposited under a plasma of mild energy was separated into a soluble fraction (sol-PPMMA) and an insoluble matrix (insol-PPMMA), which is highly crosslinked, by solvent-extraction and filtration. The chemical structure of the sol-PPMMA was determined by pyrolysis/gas chromatography, IR spectroscopy, ¹H-NMR, ¹³C-NMR, and elemental analysis techniques. On the other hand, the structure of the insol-PPMMA was examined with IR spectroscopy, ¹³C-NMR with CP/MAS method, and elemental analysis. The crosslinking mechanism in the plasma polymerization of MMA is discussed on the basis of product analyses of the sol-PPMMA and the insol-PPMMA.
