Studies on polymers containing functional groups. II. Polymerization behavior of o-hydroxystyrene

The polymerization behavior of o-hydroxystyrene with free-radical and cationic initiators and without an initiator was examined. The structures thus obtained were estimated. Although polymerization behavior of o-hydroxystyrene was rather complicated, according to the results, it appeared that each polymerization more or less might simultaneously follow the two types of mechanisms: normal vinyl polymerization and polymerization through the addition to benzene nuclei. The proportion of addition to benzene nuclei was considered to be highest in the polymerization with BF₃·(OEt)₂ and lowest in that with azobisisobutyronitrile. Degrees of polymerization of these polymers were low in all cases (42–82). Some brief experiments on copolymerization of o-hydroxystyrene were carried out.     

Effect of hydrophobic amino acids on the conformational change of decapeptides in micellar environments

A series of peptides containing various hydrophobic amino acids [methionine (Met), leucine (Leu), norleucine (Nle), phenylalanine (Phe), 2-aminooctanoic acid (Aoc), and 2-aminodecanoic acid (Ade)] were synthesized and their conformations were studied using circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy in different solvents such as water, methanol, and aqueous solution of ammonium tetradecanesulfonate. Peptides containing hydrophobic amino acids with linear side chains formed -sheets in water and methanol. Electrostatic interaction between the charged side chain (lysine) and a micelle consisting of an anionic surfactant, ammonium tetradecanesulfonate, is necessary for the formation of -helices in micellar environments. The conformational transition from -helix to -sheet structure required moderate hydrophobicity and linear side chains. This conformational transition depended on the surfactant concentration.     

The characteristic fragment ions and visualization of cationic starches on pulp fiber using ToF‐SIMS

Time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS) was used to investigate the distribution of cationic starch on pulp fiber. To identify the characteristic fragment ions of the cationic starches, deuterium‐labeled cationic starches were prepared and analyzed using ToF‐SIMS. The starch 2‐hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride derivative generated characteristic fragments at m/z 58 and 59, which were identified as [H₂C?N(CH₃)₂]⁺ and [N(CH₃)₃]^+·, respectively. The fragmentation patterns were also suggested. From the imaging analysis, the adsorption of the cationic starch on fibers was uneven on individual fibers, as well as between fibers. This may have been on account of fiber morphology and structure. On examining scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, the quaternary ammonium starch derivative (QS) did not penetrate the fiber. Polymers having stable radicals. II. Synthesis of nitroxyl polymers from 4-methacryloyl derivatives of 1-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine

Polymers having stable pendant . radicals were synthesized through their precursor polymers by oxidizing them in air or by H₂O₂–Na₂WO₄. Hydrochlorides and sulfates of 4-methacryloylamino- and 4-methacryloyloxy-1-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidines were synthesized as precursor monomers and polymerized by using α,α′-azobisisobutyronitrile under appropriate conditions to precursor polymers of high molecular weight: poly-4-methacryloylamino-/oxy-1-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinehydrochlorides and sulfates. The precursor polymers were converted to polymers having nitroxyl stable radicals, i.e., poly-4-methacryloylamino-/oxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyls, by oxidation in air or with H₂O₂–Na₂WO₄ without any main-chain scission. The structure of the resultant stable radical polymers was determined by infrared, ultraviolet, and ESR spectroscopy. Based on the results of spectroscopic analysis and Kjeldahl analysis, the transformation from precursors to nitroxyl stable radical polymers was found to be quantitative. Investigations on the applicability of polymeric nitroxyl radicals to oxidation-reduction reactions were attempted by means of polarography; the reduction half-wave potential was found to be ?1.16 V for the mercury pool.     

Application of 1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydropyrrolizinium perchlorate in the synthesis of 7a-substituted hexahydro-1h-pyrrolizines

The method for preparing 7a-substituted hexahydro-1H-pyrrolizines 2 from 1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydropyrrol-izinium Perchlorate (3) was investigated, by which introduction of a wide variety of functionalities on C(7a) could be achieved easily.     

Coenzyme models. 32. Catalytic activity of polymer-bound thiazolium ions as estimated by flavin trapping technique

Three thiazolium-containing polymers, Th-7, Th-33, and Th-18-Py [where Th-x and Py mean x mol % thiazolium unit and pyridinium unit (54 mol %), respectively], were synthesized from partially p-chloromethylated polystyrene. The catalytic activities of these polymer catalysts in acyloin condensation of aldehydes and decarboxylation of α-keto acids were estimated kinetically by oxidative trapping of the key intermediate by flavin (flavin-trapping technique). In aqueous solution at 30°C, the catalytic activity of Th-18-Py and Th-33 in condensation of p-chlorobenzaldehyde was comparable with that of the cationic-micelle-bound thiazolium ion, whereas Th-7 and a monomeric thiazolium compound (N-benzylthiazolium bromide) scarcely exhibited any catalytic activity. The catalysis of the polymer-bound thiazolium ions was sensitively suppressed by increased ionic strength. These results suggest that the pendent thiazolium ion is activated by the relatively high charge density along the polymer chain: the cationic environment is able to facilitate dissociation of the thiazolium ion to the ylid form and deprotonation of the thiazolium-aldehyde adduct to the key intermediate.     

A simple and easy access to 3-N-alkyl-5-vinyloxazolidinones mediated by palladium-phosphine catalysts

A new entry for the synthesis of 3-alkyl substituted 5-vinyloxazolidin-2-one derivatives 2 from cis-2-butenylene-1,4-dicarbonate 1 and primary amines mediated by palladium-phosphine catalysts is described. The scope and limitation, a plausible mechanism, and an asymmetric version of the reaction are also discussed.     

Multielement determination in tobacco leaves by photon activation analysis

A nondestructive photon activation procedure with 30 MeV bremsstrahlung followed by high-resolution gamma-spectrometry has been applied to the multielement determination in tobacco leaves and commercial cigarettes. The elements determined by this method included essential minor elements such as Ca, Cl, K and Mg, essential trace elements such as Fe, Mn and Zn, and possibly toxic elements such As and Sb. The NBS Orchard Leaves could successfully be used as a comparative standard. The method is quite simple and gives good reproducible results for at least 12 elements.     

Stereoselective syntheses of 4-hydroxy 4-substituted glutamic acids

The 4-hydroxy 4-substituted glutamic acid moiety is a common substructure of biologically important natural products such as monatin [(2S,4S)-2], lycoperdic acid (3), and dysiherbaine (4). To develop methodology for syntheses of these natural products, cycloadditions of nitrone 5 with 2-substituted 2-propen-1-ols 6 and 2-substituted acrylates 8 were investigated. Reactions of nitrone 5 with alcohols 6 in the presence of MgBr2OEt2 gave cycloadducts 7 in a highly stereoselective manner, whereas noncatalyzed reactions of 5 with acrylates 8 afforded adducts 9. Using the former reaction, syntheses of monatin [(2S,4S)-2], monatin derivative 18, and lycoperdic acid (3) were accomplished. The C4-epimer of monatin [(2S,4R)-2)] was also synthesized by employing the latter cycloaddition.
