Frequency bistability of a semiconductor laser under a frequency-dependent feedback

The emission frequency of a diode laser submitted to a frequency-dependent optoelectronic feedback is observed to have more than one stable operation point together with a stable power emission. This is, to our knowledge, the first observation of bistability exclusively in the frequency of an optical system. The experiment was carried out with a semiconductor laser coupled to the cesium D2 line by an orthogonally polarized frequency-sensitive optical feedback.     

1,3,5-tristyrylbenzene dendrimers: a novel model system to explore oxygen quenching in a highly organized environment

Control of the efficiency of photoisomerization by oxygen was demonstrated for 1,3,5-tristyrylbenzene dendrimers 1-3; the large dendrons do not significantly affect the photochemistry itself due to volume-conserving isomerization mechanisms but may affect the mobility of the molecules.     

The solvation of iodine anions in water clusters: PES studies

We have measured the photoelectron-spectra of I^? (H₂O)_n clusters in the size range n=1–60. We have found that the first six water molecules form a solvation layer with an average 0.35 eV electrostatic stabilization of the anion. At larger cluster sizes the electrostatic stabilization of water does not fit a continuous dielectric solvent. The most stable structures of the clusters consist of internally solvated anions. In the size range n=34–40 we have found evidence for existence of cluster structures with surface solvated anions.     

Rates of electronic excitation hopping in anisotropic ionic crystals of [Ru(2,2'-bipyridine)3]X2 (X = ClO4-, PF6-, SbF6-); Monte Carlo simulation of single- and multi-exponential emission decays

Emission decays of triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer states in anisotropic crystals of [Ru(1 - x)Os(x)(bpy)(3)]X(2) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, X = PF(6)-, ClO(4)-, SbF(6)-, and 0.115 > x > 0.001) at approximately 300 K were measured by means of time-correlated single-photon counting. Rates of excitation hopping calculated on the basis of an interaction between transition dipoles of a donor cation and an acceptor cation are insufficient to simulate the single-exponential decays (x = 0.0099) and the multiexponential decays (x = 0.060 and 0.115) of the PF(6)- salt crystals. A limiting rate of excitation hopping to an imaginary cation at the van der Waals distance via a super-exchange interaction between d orbitals through the bpy ligands was determined to be 0.83 x 10(10) s(-1) on average by means of a step-by-step Monte Carlo simulation, assuming an distance-attenuation factor, beta, of the exchange interaction of 10 nm-1. The total rate of excitation hopping via both a dipole-dipole mechanism and a super-exchange mechanism to the neighboring sites of the cation was calculated to be 5.4 x 10(9) s(-1) for the PF(6)- crystal. Anisotropic diffusion constants estimated from the hopping rates and lengths in the PF(6)- crystal are 9.3 x 10(-6), 9.1 x 10(-6), and 1.4 x 10(-6) cm(2)s(-1) along the a axis, the b axis, and the c axis, respectively, which are compared with an isotropic diffusion constant, 1.3 x 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1), estimated from the pseudo-bimolecular rate constant of excitation transfer to [Os(bpy)(3)](2+), using an isotropic Smoluchowski equation. A multiexponential emission decay of [Ru(0.885)Os(0.115)(bpy)(3)](PF(6))(2) was also simulated to determined the limiting rate of excitation transfer to [Os(bpy)(3)](2+) at the van der Waals distance (2.6 x 10(11) s(-1)). The magnitude of beta determined is 6.5 and 11.5 nm(-1) for the ClO(4)- and the SbF(6)- salt crystals, respectively, on reference to that of beta (10 nm(-1)) for the PF(6)- salt crystal.     

Bioaccumulation study of acrylates in algae (<Emphasis Type="Italic">Chlorella kessleri</Emphasis>) by Py-GC and Py-GC/MS

Acrylate monomers methylmethacrylate (MMA) and cyclohexylmethacrylate (CHMA) bioaccumulation has been determined in aquatic organism, algae (Chlorella kessleri). Algae were collected in amount of 0.4 mg and directly injected to the pyrolytical cell. In algae bodies accumulated monomers were analysed by pyrolysis gas chromatography (Py-GC) and pyrolysis gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Traces of the accumulated monomers in algae body can be determined after 1-, 2-, 3-weeks of incubation. Maximum content of MMA was determined after 3-week of experiment, contrariwise in the case of CHMA after 2-week exposition. Relationship with pyrolysis temperature has also been studied.     

Multiple-scattering approach to Sn L3-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) analyses for organic tin compounds

We apply multiple-scattering calculations to the analyses of Sn L₃-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra for environmental organotin compounds such as SnCl_4−nMe_n, SnCl_4−nBt_n, and SnCl_4−nPh_n (n = 0–4) where Me = CH₃, Bt = C₄H₉, and Ph = C₆H₅. The XANES peak at 3960 eV has rich information on the local structure. Referring to the optimized structures by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, multiple-scattering calculations well explain the observed spectral changes for different “organic extents”. The present study also supports the widely-used semiempirical rule called ‘Natoli’s rule’ for these environmental compounds, which will be useful to use XANES spectra for the practical analytical tools.     

Collisional quenching of resonance states of rare gases

We report an experimental study of Xe(³P₁) → Xe(³P₂) electronic quenching by Ar in Xe/Ar mixtures optically excited by the 1470 Å line of Xe. The quenching process was monitored by the observation of the Xe^*₂ second emission continuum at low Xe pressures.     

An investigation of the bromination of 1,4-dihydropyridine rings

Conditions for bromination at the C3 and C5 positions of a 1,4-dihydropyridine (DHP) were investigated. The effect of base concentration, base type, reaction temperature, and solvent were examined. DHP derivatives with ester and amide moieties were synthesized and brominated. The bromine atoms can be replaced by other substituents, utilizing Suzuki cross coupling.
