Transverse energy distributions in Si-nucleus collisions at 10 GeV/nucleon

Transverse energy distributions have been measured for collisions of 10 GeV/nucleon Si with targets of Al, Cu and Pb using a combination of a NaI wall and a uranium based sampling calorimeter. The measured cross sectionsdσ/dE _T anddE _T /dη are consistent with full stopping and an increase, with increasing values ofE _T , of energy flow into large angles.     

A new family of noncommutative 2-spheres

We give new examples of noncommutative manifolds. In particular we construct a “strong” deformation of C(S²), consisting of a family of noncommutative 2-spheres, and study their analytic and topological properties.     

Differentiation between major species of the Actinobacillus--Haemophilus--Pasteurella group by gas chromatography of trifluoroacetic acid anhydride derivatives from whole-cell methanolysates

A method based on whole-cell methanolysis and trifluoroacetic acid anhydride derivatization was developed for routine laboratory differentiation between isolates from the Actinobacillus--Haemophilus--Pasteurella group. All species, except Haemophilus aphrophilus, contained D-glycero-D-mannoheptose, although in varying concentrations. The distribution of this sugar could be used to distinguish H. aphrophilus from Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, H. paraphrophilus, H. influenzae type b, Pasteurella haemolytica, P. multocida and P. ureae, and also H. influenzae type b from Pasteurellae. The pattern of major sugars in P. ureae and P. haemolytica resembled that of A. actinomycetemcomitans. Major fatty acids of the whole-cell methanolysates provided no basis of interspecies differentiation.     

Influence of the gel-liquid phase transition on hematoporphyrin triplet deactivation in liposomes

The deactivation of the triplet state of hematoporphyrin and its dimethyl ester in unilamellar liposomes of dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine was studied by nanosecond laser flash photolysis. It was found that the rate of deactivation increases abruptly on raising the temperature in the region of the gel-liquid phase transition of the lipid bilayer (41 degrees C). The rate of change has its maximum at 38.4 +/- 0.5 degree C for both porphyrins. This variation is due to the high lateral mobility of the porphyrins in the liquid-crystal bilayer, which enhances the rates of concentration triplet quenching and triplet-triplet annihilation.     

Anomalies in the surface impedance penetration depth in ferromagnetic superconductors

We have investigated the surface impedance penetration depth, Λ, of ErRh₄B₄ and Er_0.5Ho_0.5Rh₄B₄ both experimentally and theoretically. For ErRh₄B₄, owing to the critical spin fluctuations just above T_s ( > T_c2), the critical temperature at which surface ferromagnetism appears, Λ^?1 decreases smoothly as T decreases toward T_s. For Er_0.5Ho_0.5Rh₄B₄, the decrease in Λ^?1 owing to spin fluctuations for T ? T_c2 is very small, and Λ^?1 decreases abruptly at T_c2. Theoretical values of Λ^?1 are in good agreement with the data.     

Exact and numerical solutions to the perturbed sine-Gordon equation

We present numerical and analytic solutions to the perturbed sine-Gordon equation, which models long Josephson tunnel junctions. We make comparisons between numerical results and results obtained from perturbational methods. We present unstable, analytic kink solutions to the equation and further a solution, which is an array of kinks, corresponding to a solution, where the current through the junction is larger than the critical current.     

Superparamagnetism in primitive meteorites

The meteorites called carbonaceous chondrites are the least altered samples we have of the material which formed our solar system. Using⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy we show that the carbonaceous chondrite Murchison contains a compound exhibiting superparamagnetic relaxation below 80 K.
