Several studies have shown that combustion-derived fine particles cause adverse health effects. Previous toxicological studies on combustion-derived fine particles have rarely involved multiple endpoints and a detailed characterization of chemical composition. In this study, we developed a novel particle sampling system for toxicological and chemical characterization (PSTC), consisting of the Dekati Gravimetric Impactor (DGI) and a porous tube diluter. Physico-chemical and toxicological properties of the particles emitted from various combustion sources were evaluated in two measurement campaigns. First, the DGI was compared with the High-Volume Cascade Impactor (HVCI) and to the Dekati Low-Pressure Impactor (DLPI), using the same dilution system and the same sampling conditions. Only small differences were observed in the mass size distributions, total particulate matter (PM), and particulate matter with diameter smaller than 1 um (PM(1)) concentrations and geometric mass mean diameters (GMMD) between these three impactors. Second, the PSTC was compared with the HVCI sampling system, which has been optimal for collection of particulate samples for toxicological and chemical analyses. Differences were observed in the mass size distributions, total PM and PM(1) emissions, and GMMDs, probably due to the different sampling and dilution methods as well as different sampling substrates which affected the behavior of semi-volatile and volatile organic compounds. However, no significant differences were detected in the in vitro measurements of cytotoxicity between the samples collected with the PSTC and the HVCI systems. In measurements of genotoxicity, significant differences between the two sampling systems were seen only with the particles emitted from the sauna stove. In conclusion, due to compact size, PSTC is an applicable method for use in particle sampling as part of the toxicological and chemical characterization of particulate emissions from different combustion sources. Even though nanocomposites have provided a plethora of routes to increase stiffness and strength, achieving increased toughness with suppressed catastrophic crack growth has remained more challenging. Inspired by the concepts of mechanically excellent natural nanomaterials, one‐component nanocomposites were fabricated involving reinforcing colloidal nanorod cores with polymeric grafts containing supramolecular binding units. The concept is based on mechanically strong native cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) grafted with glassy polymethacrylate polymers, with side chains that contain 2‐ureido‐4[1H]‐pyrimidone (UPy) pendant groups. The interdigitation of the grafts and the ensuing UPy hydrogen bonds bind the nanocomposite network together. Under stress, UPy groups act as sacrificial bonds: simultaneously providing adhesion between the CNCs while allowing them to first orient and then gradually slide past each other, thus dissipating fracture energy. We propose that this architecture involving supramolecular binding units within side chains of polymer grafts attached to colloidal reinforcements opens generic approaches for tough nanocomposites. 相似文献

The migration of acetyl, pivaloyl, and benzoyl protective groups and their relative stabilities at variable pH for a series of beta- d-galactopyranoses were studied by NMR spectroscopy. The clockwise and counterclockwise migration rates for the different ester groups were accurately determined by use of a kinetic model. The results presented provide new insights into the acid and base stabilities of commonly used ester protecting groups and the phenomenon of acyl group migration and may prove useful in the planning of synthesis strategies. 相似文献

Subtype selectivity and flexibility of ionotropic glutamate receptors upon antagonist ligand binding

The binding modes of a set of known ionotropic glutamate receptor antagonist-ligands have been studied using homology modeling, molecular docking, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and ab initio quantum mechanical calculations. The core structure of the studied ligands is the decahydroisoquinoline ring, which has a carboxylic acid group at position three and different negatively-charged substituents (R) at position six. The binding affinities of these molecules have been reported earlier. From the current study, the carboxylate group of the decahydroisoquinoline ring hydrogen bonds with Arg485, the amino group with Pro478 and Thr480, and the negatively charged substituent R interacts with the positively charged N-terminus of helix-F. The subtype selectivity of these ligands seems to be strongly dependent on the amino acid at position 650 (GluR2: leucine, GluR5: valine), which affects the conformation of the ligand and ligand-receptor interactions, but depends considerably on the size of the R-group of the ligand. In addition, the MD simulations also revealed that the relative positions of the S1 and S2 domains can alter significantly showing different "closure" and "rotational movements" depending on the antagonist-ligand that is bound. Accordingly, molecular docking of antagonist ligands into static crystal structures cannot sufficiently explain ligand binding and subtype selectivity. 相似文献

We analyze the temperature dependence of CP violation effects in the standard model by determining the effective action of its bosonic fields, obtained after integrating out the fermions from the theory and performing a covariant gradient expansion. We find nonvanishing CP violating terms starting at the sixth order of the expansion, albeit only in the C-odd-P-even sector, with coefficients that depend on quark masses, Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements, temperature and the magnitude of the Higgs field. The CP violating effects are observed to decrease rapidly with temperature, which has important implications for the generation of a matter-antimatter asymmetry in the early Universe. Our results suggest that the cold electroweak baryogenesis scenario may be viable within the standard model, provided the electroweak transition temperature is at most of order 1 GeV. 相似文献

A Monte Carlo study is presented to discuss the influence of the side-chain topology on the enhancement of the persistence length of a molecular bottle-brush in a dilute athermal solution due to the excluded volume interactions between the side chains. The structures investigated consisted of freely jointed backbones of 100 hard spheres (beads) of diameter 1 to which 50 equally flexible side chains were grafted. The diameter of the side-chain beads was varied from 1 to 3 in the same units. For every given size of the side-chain bead, the length of the side chains was varied from 4 to 20 beads. The ratio between the persistence length and the bottle-brush diameter, which is the determining factor for lyotropic behavior of conventional semi-flexible chains, was found to be almost independent of the side-chain length. At the same time, it was found to increase considerably with increasing size of the side-chain beads, suggesting that by a proper choice of the chemistry lyotropic behavior of molecular bottle-brushes due to excluded-volume interactions between the side chains might be achieved. Moreover, relatively short side chains can be used since the side chain length has only a minor influence on the ratio between the persistence length and the diameter.
