A mini-landscape of exact MSSM spectra in heterotic orbifolds

We explore a “fertile patch” of the heterotic landscape based on a Z₆-II${\mathbb{Z}}_6\text{-II}$ orbifold with SO(10) and E₆ local GUT structures. We search for models allowing for the exact MSSM spectrum. Our result is that of order 100 out of a total 3×¹⁰⁴$3\times {10}^4$ inequivalent models satisfy this requirement.     

Silver/polystyrene-coated hollow glass waveguides for the transmission of terahertz radiation

We have applied techniques developed for IR waveguides to fabricate Ag/polystyrene (PS) -coated hollow glass waveguides (HGWs) for transmission of terahertz radiation. A loss of 0.95 dB/m at 119 microm (2.5 THz) was obtained for a 2 mm bore, 90 cm long Ag/PS HGW. We found that TE modes are supported in HGWs with thin PS films, while hybrid (HE) modes dominate when PS film thickness increases. The lowest losses are obtained for the thicker PS films and the propagation of the HE modes.

Controlling the Surface Functionalization of Ultrasmall Gold Nanoparticles by Sequence-Defined Macromolecules

Ultrasmall gold nanoparticles (diameter about 2 nm) were surface-functionalized with cysteine-carrying precision macromolecules. These consisted of sequence-defined oligo(amidoamine)s (OAAs) with either two or six cysteine molecules for binding to the gold surface and either with or without a PEG chain (3400 Da). They were characterized by ¹H NMR spectroscopy, ¹H NMR diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The number of precision macromolecules per nanoparticle was determined after fluorescent labeling by UV spectroscopy and also by quantitative ¹H NMR spectroscopy. Each nanoparticle carried between 40 and 100 OAA ligands, depending on the number of cysteine units per OAA. The footprint of each ligand was about 0.074 nm² per cysteine molecule. OAAs are well suited to stabilize ultrasmall gold nanoparticles by selective surface conjugation and can be used to selectively cover their surface. The presence of the PEG chain considerably increased the hydrodynamic diameter of both dissolved macromolecules and macromolecule-conjugated gold nanoparticles.

Preparation and Crystal Structure of a New Uranyl Sulfate Templated by a Bis-isothiouronium Cation

Crystals of a new uranyl sulfate (C₂N₄H₈S₂)[UO₂(SO₄)₂] · 0.3H₂O ( 1 ) templated by a relatively rare bis-isothiouronium cation, were formed upon evaporation of aqueous solutions containing uranyl acetate, thiourea, and excess sulfuric acid. The new compound is orthorhombic, P2₁2₁2₁, a = 6.928(2) Å, b = 13.398(3) Å, c = 15.225(3) Å, Z = 2. Its crystal structure is comprised of [UO₂(SO₄)₂] moieties linked by hydrogen bonds formed between the template cations and terminal oxygen atoms of the sulfate tetrahedra. The C₂N₄H₈S₂²⁺ template is most likely formed in situ during a redox reaction between uranyl cation and thiourea in a strongly acidic medium, with UO₂²⁺ partially reduced to U⁴⁺.

Synthesis of Supported Heterogeneous Catalysts by Laser Ablation of Metallic Palladium in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Medium

To obtain a supported heterogeneous catalyst, laser ablation of metallic palladium in supercritical carbon dioxide was performed in the presence of a carrier, microparticles of γ-alumina. The influence of the ablation process conditions—including supercritical fluid density, ablation, mixing time of the mixture, and laser wavelength—on the completeness and efficiency of the deposition of palladium particles on the surface of the carrier was studied. The obtained composites were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy using energy dispersive spectroscopy. We found that palladium particles were nanosized and had a narrow size distribution (2–8 nm). The synthesized composites revealed high activity as catalysts in the liquid-phase hydrogenation of diphenylacetylene.
