Preparation of chiral 5-deazaflavin derivatives and their asymmetric reduction of ethyl benzoylformate

1,5-Dihydro-5-deazaflavin derivatives possessing a chiral substituent at N(3) position were synthesized, with which moderate asymmetric induction was observed in the reduction of ethyl benzoylformate.     

High-energy dye laser pumped by wall-ablation lamps

A guideline for the optimum design of linear wall-ablation lamps is presented with a simple empirical formula which describes the luminescent characteristics of lamps. The absolute luminescent efficiency of the wall-ablation lamp was measured. A high-energy dye laser with a quadruple-elliptical cylindrical cavity was constructed using these lamps, and an output energy of 23.3 J (11.6 MW) was obtained with an overall efficiency of 0.31 %. The energy-flow diagram of this laser system was computed with a rate-equation analysis, and the conversion efficiency from electrical input to laser output was determined. One can expect an overall efficiency of about 2 %.     

Syntheses of a series of octaethylporphyrin-benzoquinone linked molecules as a model for the primary process of photosynthesis

To clarify the primary process of photosynthesis, a series of model compounds, in which an octaethylporphyrin and a benzoquinone ring are connected with different lengths of a polymethylene chain, were synthesized and their photophysical properties were investigated.

Observation of pentads in deuterated polyacrylonitrile by NMR spectroscopy

The deuterium-decoupled methine proton spectra of polyacrylonitrile-β,β-d₂ were measured at 156°C in dimethylsulfoxide-d₆ solution. Splittings of triad peaks caused by pentad sequences were observed. The isotactic triad resonance was resolved into three peaks and the heterotactic resonance into two peaks, while the syndiotactic resonance was unresolved or resolved into three peaks. The splittings were assigned by comparing the probability of each pentad sequence with observed intensities. The pentad signal shifted to the higher magnetic field with increasing number of meso configurations as neighbors of the central triad. It was observed that the pentad of atactic polyacrylonitrile-β,β-d₂ obeyed Bernoullian statistics but that of isotactic polymer obtained by γ-ray irradiation of the canal complex seemingly obeyed first-order Markov statistics.
