Formation of pyrrolo[2,3-f]quinolines from substituted 5-methyl-6-aminomoles by the combes reaction

It is shown that the reaction of 2, 3, 5-trimethyl-6-amino-indole with 1, 3-diketones is a convenient method for the preparation of angular IH-pyrrolo[2,3-f]quinolines, while the presence of a methyl group on the pyrrolic nitrogen atom of the initial indole as a result of steric hindrance completely blocks cyclization to the corresponding pyrroloquinolines.Mordovskii State Educational Institute, Saransk 430007. Resolution of a paradox in the electrophoresis of DNA in agarose gels

A paradox was observed in a previous study of the electrophoresis of linear DNA fragments in agarose gels (D. L. Holmes and N. C. Stellwagen, Electrophoresis 1990, 11, 5-15). The pore size of the agarose matrix was more accurately determined if the root-mean-square radius of gyration was used to measure DNA macromolecular size. However, the Ogston equations were obeyed and other gel parameters such as the apparent fiber radius and fiber volume appeared to be better described if the geometric mean radius was used to measure DNA size. This paradox can be resolved if relative mobilities (with respect to the smallest DNA molecule in the data set) are used to construct the Ferguson plots, instead of absolute mobilities. Using relative mobilities and the root-mean-square radius of gyration, the Ogston equations are obeyed and the pore size of the matrix is consistent with values determined by other methods.     

Kinetics of Hydroperoxide Epoxidation of 1-Octene in the Presence of MoB2

We have studied the kinetics of the process of epoxidation of 1-octene by tert-butyl hydroperoxide in the presence of molybdenum boride MoB₂. We have studied the effect of the concentrations of starting materials and reaction products on the process. We suggest a kinetic scheme and we calculate the kinetic parameters of the process.     

Dehydrogenation of propane on aluminoplatinum catalysts modified with Re,Zr, Sc,and Sn

The effect of addition of Re, Zr, Sc, and Sn on an aluminoplatinum catalyst in the reaction of dehydrogenation of propane was investigated. It was shown that addition of 0.2–0.5% Zr, Sc, or Re virtually does not alter the catalytic properties of the aluminoplatinum catalyst (APC); addition of 0.2% Sn increases the activity, selectivity, and stability of Pt/Al₂O₃. The amount of coke deposited on the APC after the first 5 min of work decreases by three times in the presence of Sn. Crystal structure of methylbis(chloromethyl)phosphine oxide

Simulating the diffraction pattern in the focal plane of a lens-axicon system

Laser beam concentration into a narrow ring with a lens and axicon is considered, as there are applications in working surfaces, cutting wafers and slices, and in welding or soldering tubes to heat-exchanger plates. A model is constructed and a working formula is derived for the diffraction pattern in the focal plane of such a system when the axicon is illuminated by a plane wave. Self-activated luminescence of zinc sulfide

The nature of the luminescence of zinc sulfide in the spectral range (360), 380–420 nm (SAL) at 80K is analyzed. It is shown that the appearance of SAL radiation is accompanied by additional absorption in the region (350) 365–370 nm at 80K. The low-temperature spectra of sphalerite, exposed to different radiation and subjected to different treatment, are studied. The multiband luminescence of the isoelectronic sulfur impurity in ZnO deposits in the region 383–640 nm is discussed. It is concluded that SAL luminescence is attributable to the localization of excitons in ZnS on clusters, whose formation precedes the precipitation of the ZnO·S phase. Two-photon absorption and energy band structure of orthorhombic Hg2Cl2 crystals

Dependence of two-photon absorption (TPA) rate on the state of polarization of a laser beam is investigated in the low-temperature orthorhombic modification of Hg₂Cl₂ crystals. Theoretical calculations of the dependence of TPA rate on the direction of polarization vector of the beam are performed for centrosymmetric points, Y, Z, T, R andS of the Brillouin zone. The domain structure of real crystals is taken into consideration and it is shown that periodicity of the polarization dependence may indicate whether TPA is due to transitions either at, Y, Z, T orR, S points. The polarization dependence of TPA cannot, however, distinguish between points inside these two groups. Comparison of theory with a low-temperature (T 8·5 K) experimental curve of polarization dependence is discussed. It is shown that the experiment can be explained in main features by a model of noninteracting oriented linear dipoles. Further, on the basis of TPA measurements, a simple energy band structure of Hg₂Cl₂ is proposed regarding Hg₂Cl₂ crystal as a linear chain of molecules.The authors express thanks to Dr. .
