Characterization of low molecular weight hydrocarbon oligomers by laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry using a solvent-free sample preparation method.

A new solvent-free sample preparation method using silver trifluoroacetate (AgTFA) was developed for the analysis of low molecular weight paraffins and microcrystalline waxes by laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LDI-TOFMS). Experiments show that spectral quality can be enhanced by dispersing AgTFA directly in liquid paraffins without the use of additional solvents. This preparation mixture is applied directly to the MALDI probe. Solid waxes could be examined by melting prior to analysis. The method also provides sufficiently reproducible spectra that peak area ratios between mono- and bicyclic alkane peaks indicated variations in the cycloalkane content of paraffin samples. Dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons observed during the desorption/ionization process was studied by analysis of alkane standards.     

Electrochemical Recovery of Silver from Lead Alloys in Chloride Melts

Electrochemical separation of lead-silver alloys into the constituents by thin-layer electrolysis in molten electrolytes, with bismuth as metal separator, is studied. It is proposed to determine the extent of component recovery by potentiometry.     

On the problem of calculating the optical film parameters from the measured transmission spectra

The procedure for calculating the dispersion of the refractive and absorption indices and thickness of an optical film, based on measurements of spectral dependence of the transmittance, is described. The film parameters are calculated using a solution of the approximation problem. The effect of the film model on the calculated values of the refractive and absorption indices is analyzed.     

On the connection of the superposition and homogeneous-solutions methods in wave propagation problems in a semi-infinite rigidly-clamped elastic layer

The process of harmonic wave propagation is investigated in a semi-infinite rigidly-clamped elastic layer. An analytic solution of the problem is obtained by the superposition method. The wave field expansion in the form of a normal mode series for a corresponding infinite waveguide is established. According to residue theory, the explicit form of the expansion coefficients is established with physical requirements of the radiation conditions taken into account.Translated from Teoreticheskaya i Prikladnaya Mekhanika, No. 19, pp. 3–10, 1988.     

Design of neutral, mono- or di-cationic water-soluble trihydrazidophosphoradamantanes

The versatile behavior of a trihydrazidophosphoradamantane allowing the synthesis of a variety of neutral, mono- or di-cationic water-soluble molecules of potential interest for biphasic catalysis is reported.     

Continuum Limit of the Volterra Model, Separation of Variables and Non-Standard Realizations of the Virasoro Poisson Bracket

The classical Volterra model, equipped with the Faddeev-Takhtajan Poisson bracket provides a lattice version of the Virasoro algebra. The Volterra model being integrable, we can express the dynamical variables in terms of the so-called separated variables. Taking the continuum limit of these formulae, we obtain the Virasoro generators written as determinants of infinite matrices, the elements of which are constructed with a set of points lying on an infinite genus Riemann surface. The coordinates of these points are separated variables for an infinite set of Poisson commuting quantities including L ₀. The scaling limit of the eigenvector can also be calculated explicitly, so that the associated Schroedinger equation is in fact exactly solvable.     

On the geometry of infinite cyclic subgroups

In this paper we construct an example of a word metric on an infinite cyclic subgroup. This example shows that subexponential distortion does not obstruct non-trivial growth of connected radii. This answers a question of Gromov [6]. The constructed metric has other pathological properies. Specifically, its asymptotic cone depends on the choice of ultrafilter and scaling sequence. Reaction of methyl bromopropiolate with diamines as a method of synthesis of imidazolidine derivatives
