Determination of heavy metal concentration in feed and permeate streams of polymer enhanced ultrafiltration process

Polymer enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF) is a newly developed method for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. This method was applied for the removal of mercury and cadmium with the presence of polyethyleneimine (PEI) as a water soluble polymer. After ultrafiltration experiments for metal–polymer mixtures, two separate streams, namely, retentate and permeate, former of which contains mainly metal–polymer complex and free polymer molecules while latter of which mainly contains free metal ions, were obtained. At the end of PEUF experiments, performance of operation was determined by concentration analyses which was achieved by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) applied in a different way for permeate and retentate streams considering the effect of presence of polymer. For mercury analysis, cold vapor AAS was applied. It was observed that the presence of PEI did not affect the atomic absorption signal when 10% HCl was added to the sample solutions. For calcium and cadmium, flame AAS was used. It was observed that change in PEI concentration results in change in measured concentration of calcium and cadmium. Therefore, two new approaches were developed for accurate measurement of concentrations of calcium and cadmium. It was also observed that presence of other metals did not affect the accuracy of the measurement of a particular metal in the concentration range studied.     

Binding evaluation of isoform 1 fromCratylia mollis lectin to human mammary tissues

The phenomenon of altered carbohydrates in transformed cell surfaces has been studied through histochemical techniques using lectins. Specific binding patterns to normal and transformed mammary tissues were evaluated by Isoform 1 fromCratylia mollis lectin (Cra Iso 1). Protocols using a direct method, incubation of Cra Iso I conjugated to peroxidase (Cra Iso 1-Per) with mammary tissues, followed by diaminobenzidine and hydrogen peroxidase interaction, were performed. Neoplastic tissues, marked by Cra Iso 1, showed a higher intensity of staining than normal ones, in comparison withCanavalia ensiformis lectin, Concanavalin A (Con A), conjugated to peroxidase (Con A-Per). The assay with Cra Iso 1 also indicated a possible utilization of this lectin to characterize normal and transformed mammary cells.     

Remote Regiocontrol by a Thioether Group in Diels-Alder Reactions of Naphthazarin: Regioselective Access to Tetracyclic Polyhydroxyquinones

The synthesis of tetracyclic polyhydroxyquinones 5a and 5b was achieved through a sequence involving two Diels-Alder reactions with 1-methoxy-1,3-cyclohexadiene: the first with 2-(p-tolylthio)naphthazarin and the second on the resulting tricyclic derivative previously transformed into a (p-tolylsulfinyl)naphthazarin. The success of this strategy stemmed from the efficient remote regiocontrol exerted by the thioether substituent in the first step.     

On the number of triple points of the tangent developable

We study the singularities of the tangent developable of a generic curve in ³ and prove that if the curve has no torsion zero points, the number of triple points of that surface must be even.     

Critical behavior of self-avoiding walks on fractals

Using a new graph counting technique suitable for self-similar fractals, exact 18th-order series expansions for SAWs on some Sierpinski carpets are generated. From them, the critical fugacityx _c and critical exponents _SAW and _SAW are obtained. The results show a linear dependence of the critical fugacity with the average number of bonds per site of the lattices studied. We find for some carpets with low lacunarity that _SAW<0.75, thus violating the relation _SAW(fractal) > _SAW (d) for SAWs on the fractals which are embedded in ad-dimensional Euclidean space.     

Carbyne-fluoro complexes of rhenium. Single-pot synthesis of trans-[ReF(CCH2R)-(Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2)2][BF4]

Treatment of a THF solution of trans-[ReCl(N₂)(dppe)₂] (dppe = Ph₂PCH₂CH₂PPh₂) with a 1-alkyne HCCR (R =^tBu, CO₂Me, CO₂Et, or C₆H₄Me-4), in the presence of Tl[BF₄]/[NH₄][BF₄], under sunlight, affords the corresponding carbyne-fluoro complexes trans-[ReF(CCH₂R)(dppe)₂][BF₄] in an unprecedented single-pot synthesis. Further reaction with [BU₄N]OH leads to the vinylidenefluoro compounds trans-[ReF(=C=CHR)(dppe)₂] (R = CO₂Me, CO₂Et, or C₆H₄Me-4).
