Agropine,a new amino acid derivative from crown gall tumours

Agropine, an unusual compound produced in plant tumours was shown by mass spectrometry and proton and carbon-13 nmr spectroscopy to be a bicyclic derivative of glutamic acid and a hexitol sugar.     

Planes and processes

This article presented to Combinatorics 2006 is a survey of finite projective planes and the processes used to construct them. All non-translation planes are described, fundamental processes in translation planes are defined and some of these are used to connect semi-field flocks with symplectic spreads. Hermitian ovoids are connected to extensions of derivable nets, and three types of ‘lifting’ methods are discussed. Furthermore, hyperbolic fibrations and ‘regulus-inducing’ central collineation groups are connected to flocks of quadratic cones. Finally, hyper-reguli and multiple hyper-regulus replacement are considered.     

Shades of orthodoxy in Rees-Sushkevich varieties

It is shown that, within the class of Rees-Sushkevich varieties that are generated by completely (0-) simple semigroups over groups of exponent dividing n, there is a hierarchy of varieties determined by the lengths of the products of idempotents that will, if they fall into a group ℋ-class, be idempotent. Moreover, the lattice of varieties generated by completely (0-) simple semigroups over groups of exponent dividing n, with the property that all products of idempotents that fall into group ℋ-classes are idempotent, is shown to be isomorphic to the direct product of the lattice of varieties of groups with exponent dividing n and the lattice of exact subvarieties of a variety generated by a certain five element completely 0-simple semigroup.     

On Appell Sets and the Fueter-Sce Mapping

It is proved in Clifford algebras generated by an odd number of basis vectors e ₁, ... , e _n , that the recently discussed Appell polynomials in Clifford algebras are the Fueter-Sce extension of the complex monomials z ^k . Furthermore, it is shown, for which complex functions the Fueter-Sce extension and the extension method using Appell polynomials coincide.      

Existence of (2, 8) GWhD( v) and (4, 8) GWhD( v) with $${ v \equi v 0,1 (mod 8)}$$

(2, 8) Generalized Whist tournament Designs (GWhD) on v players exist only if . We establish that these necessary conditions are sufficient for all but a relatively small number of (possibly) exceptional cases. For there are at most 12 possible exceptions: {177, 249, 305, 377, 385, 465, 473, 489, 497, 537, 553, 897}. For there are at most 98 possible exceptions the largest of which is v = 3696. The materials in this paper also enable us to obtain four previously unknown (4, 8)GWhD(8n+1), namely for n = 16,60,191,192 and to reduce the list of unknown (4, 8) GWhD(8n) to 124 values of v the largest of which is v = 3696.      

Specht modules and chromatic polynomials

An explicit formula for the chromatic polynomials of certain families of graphs, called bracelets', is obtained. The terms correspond to irreducible representations of symmetric groups. The theory is developed using the standard bases for the Specht modules of representation theory, and leads to an effective means of calculation.     

Algorithms for spline wavelet packets on an interval

The aim of this paper is to describe decomposition and reconstruction algorithms for spline wavelet packets on a closed interval. In order to generate packet spaces of dyadic dimensions, it is necessary to modify the approach for spline wavelets on an interval as studied by Chui, Quak and Weyrich in [3, 11]. The first author was supported by the Department of the Air Force, contract F33600-94-M-2603, and the second author by the Department of Defense, contract H98230-R5-93-9187.     

Maximal Partial Spreads and Flocks

Denote by a flock of a quadratic cone of PG(3,q) by S() the spread of PG(3,q) associated with and by l the common line of the base reguli. Suppose that there are two lines not transversal to a base regulus which share the same lines of S() Then we prove that is either linear or a Kantor-Knuth semifield flock. Using this property we can extend the result of J3 on derivable flocks proving that, if a set of q + 1 lines of S() defines a derivable net different from a base regulus-net, then is either linear or a Kantor-Knuth semifield flock. Moreover if l is not a component of the derivable net, then is linear.     

Game,set, and graph

In the twentieth century the theory of games was transformed. It began as an amusing pastime, and ended as a major branch of mathematical research and a key paradigm of economic theory. Here it will be argued that the transformation was the result of the work of mathematicians, such as Ernst Zermelo, John von Neumann and Dénes K?nig, who also contributed to two other areas of mathematics that were emerging at the same time: the theory of sets and the theory of graphs.
