Bounds on mass transport of flow on an inclined plate

Zusammenfassung In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird das Variationsproblem, welches die Schranken für den Durchfluss in turbulenter Strömung auf einer geneigten Platte bestimmt, nach Busse [2] abgeleitet. Es wird die symmetrische Natur der Lösung des Variationsproblems für die ebene Poiseuille-Strömung geprüft. Dies zeigt einerseits Ähnlichkeit und andrerseits Unterschiede zwischen dem Problem der ebenen Poiseuille-Strömung und der Strömung auf einer geneigten Platte.     

A new 9-methoxyyohimbine-type indole alkaloid from Mitragyna africanus

A new yohimbine-type indole alkaloid (1). was isolated from the stem bark of Mitragyna africanus (WILLD.) collected in Nigeria, along with known seven Corynanthe-type oxindole alkaloids, two secoiridoids, three lignans, and a quinovic acid derivative. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses.     

Two-dimensional diffraction study of ice crystallisation in polymer gels

Ice crystallisation in crosslinked dextran (Sephadex) gels was studied by the method of two-dimensional X-ray diffraction (XRD) in combination with the simultaneous measurement of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). With a Sephadex G25 gel where an exotherm due to ice crystallisation is observed in the DSC rewarming trace, it was indicated by the XRD pattern that small ice crystals less than approximately 10 microns in diameter are readily formed during freezing, and that the endothermic trend prior to the exotherm is not due to the glass transition but due to the melting of the small ice crystals. Moreover, the diffraction pattern observed with frozen Sephadex gels depended on the density of crosslink indicating that ice crystals of different size and dimension are formed in the gels.     

Ten new Lycopodium alkaloids having the lycopodane skeleton isolated from Lycopodium serratum Thunb

Ten new alkaloids, lycoposerramines-F (1), -G (2), -H (3), -I (4), -J (5), -K (6), -L (7), -M (8), -N (9), and -O (10), having lycopodine-related structures, were isolated from the club moss Lycopodium serratum THUNB. and their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis and/or chemical transformation.     

A novel gas sensor from polymer‐grafted carbon black: responsiveness of electric resistance of conducting composite from LDPE and PE‐b‐PEO‐grafted carbon black in various vapors

The composite of low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) filled with carbon black (CB) having high dispersibility and stability was successfully obtained by the use of poly(ethylene‐block‐ethylene oxide) (PE‐b‐PEO)‐grafted CB. The response of the electric resistance of the composite against solvent vapors was examined. The electric resistance drastically increased by 10⁴–10⁶ times the initial resistance in a nonpolar solvent vapor such as cyclohexane, and carbon tetrachloride vapor at 40 °C and returned immediately to its initial resistance when the composite was transferred to dry air. However, the electric resistance increased only several times in the polar solvent vapor, such as water and alcohol, at the same temperature. The responsiveness of electric resistance is excellently reproducible and is also stable in cyclohexane vapor and dry air. The effect of temperature on the responsiveness against cyclohexane vapor is also discussed. It is concluded that the composite of LDPE filled with PE‐b‐PEO‐grafted CB could be a promising material to use when preparing gas sensors. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Quantitative estimation of NH3 partial pressure in H2 desorbed from the Li-N-H system by Raman spectroscopy

The partial pressure of NH3 gas estimated by Raman spectroscopy indicates that approximately 0.1% NH3 inevitably contaminates the H2 desorbed from a hydrogen storage material composed of LiH and LiNH2 at any temperature up to 400 degrees C in a closed system.     

Transition-Metal Free Catalytic Synthesis of Trifluoromethyl Indolines by [4+1] Cycloaddition of Trifluoromethyl Benzoxazinones with Sulfur Ylides

Stereoselective catalytic synthesis of 3-trifluoromethyl indolines through the [4+1] cycloaddition of benzoxazinones and sulfur ylides in a transition-metal-free manner was developed. In the presence of a catalytic amount of sodium hydride, aza-ortho-quinone methide intermediates were formed from trifluoromethyl benzoxazinones through decarboxylation after the first nucleophilic attack of sulfur ylides, which progressed to a second nucleophilic attack of sulfur ylides, resulting in the [4+1] cycloaddition. The key for this catalytic transformation is the dual attack of sulfur ylides on substrates. This unique transition-metal-free protocol is applicable to the synthesis of non-fluorinated vinyl-, ethynyl- or methyl-substituted indolines. The synthesis of 3-trifluoromethyl indoles was also achieved described under stoichiometric conditions.     

Synthesis of Functionalized 1-Alkenylboronates via Hydroboration-Dealkylation of Alkynes with Diisopinocampheylborane

Hydroborations of propargyl chloride, ethyl propiolate, 3-trimethylsilyloxy-1-butyne, 1,1-diethoxy-2-propyne, 1-iodo- and 1-bromo-1-hexyne, and 1-bromo-3-chloro-1-propyne with diisopinocampheylborane 1, followed by dealkylation of the isopinocampheyl groups with acetaldehyde provide the corresponding 1-alkenylboronates in high yields with high regioselectivity.     

Time-dependent fluctuations in infrared vsCH2 frequencies in acyl chain membranes of Acholeplasma laidlawii cells

We measured FT-IR spectra of intact Acholeplasma laidlawii cells grown at 37 °C on palmitic acid (C16:0) or on binary palmitic acid-d31/oleic acid (C16:0-d31/C18:1(9)) at an initial mole ratio of 2:3, which have been previously reported to produce significant fluctuations in CH₂ symmetric stretching (ν_sCH₂) and CD₂ asymmetric stretching (ν_aCD₂) frequencies (Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1279 (1996) 49). Time courses for acyl chain ν_sCH₂ and ν_aCD₂ frequencies determined from fourth derivative spectra are presented. Fluctuations were detected with the C16:0 enriched cells at temperatures above 40 °C as well as with the cells enriched in 2:3 C16:0-d₃₁/C18:1(9). These observations at temperatures above 40 °C for the C16:0 enriched cells were not in agreement with the conclusion in the previous work by Moore et al. Our results have suggested that the 2850 cm⁻¹ ν_sCH₂ band comprises two components arising from trans and gauche conformations, and that the fluctuations in ν_sCH₂ frequency are caused by random temporal changes in the relative intensities of these two components.
