Control of bacteria adhesion by cell-wall engineering

UDP-MurNAc-pentapeptide derivative bacterial cell-wall precursors were synthesized as effective tools for surface display on living bacteria. Lactobacilli were incubated in the ketone-modified precursor-containing medium, and the ketone moiety was displayed on the bacterial surface through cell-wall biosynthesis. Oligomannose was coupled with the ketone moiety on the bacterial surface via a aminooxyl linker, thereby displaying this oligosaccharide on the surface of the bacteria. The increase in the adhesion of the sugar-displaying bacteria onto a concanavalin A-attached film compared to that of native bacteria was confirmed by microscopic observation and surface plasmon resonance measurement. The incorporation of the artificial cell-wall precursors was enhanced when incubated with fosfomycin, an inhibitor of cell-wall precursor biosynthesis.     

Elliptic Apostol sums and their reciprocity laws

We introduce an elliptic analogue of the Apostol sums, which we call elliptic Apostol sums. These sums are defined by means of certain elliptic functions with a complex parameter having positive imaginary part. When , these elliptic Apostol sums represent the well-known Apostol generalized Dedekind sums. Also these elliptic Apostol sums are modular forms in the variable . We obtain a reciprocity law for these sums, which gives rise to new relations between certain modular forms (of one variable).

     

A chiral chelating diene as a new type of chiral ligand for transition metal catalysts: its preparation and use for the rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric 1,4-addition

As a new type of chiral ligand, a C2-symmetric norbornadiene derivative (1R,4R)-2,5-dibenzylbicyclo[2.2.1]hepta-2,5-diene (1) was prepared and used for the rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric addition of organoboron and -tin reagents to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones, which gave high yields of the 1,4-addition products with up to 99% enantioselectivity.     

Complete NMR analysis of oxytocin in phosphate buffer

Complete NMR analysis of oxytocin (OXT) in phosphate buffer was elucidated by one‐dimensional (1D)‐ and two‐dimensional (2D)‐NMR techniques, which involve the assignment of peptide amide NH protons and carbamoyl NH₂ protons. The ¹H? ¹⁵N correlation of seven amide NH protons and three carbamoyl NH₂ protons were also shown by HSQC NMR of OXT without ¹⁵N enrichment. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Oligosaccharide sensing with chromophore-modified curdlan in aqueous media

A newly synthesized chromophore-modified curdlan functions as a saccharide chemosensor in aqueous solution, enabling us to discriminate tetrasaccharide acarbose from 24 mono-, di-, tri-, and tetrasaccharides.     

Chirality‐Sensing Binaphthocrown Ether–Polythiophene Conjugate

An enantiomeric binaphthyl unit was tethered to adjacent thiophenes with oxyethylene linkers to give a chiral polythiophene with binaphthocrown ether cavities. Upon inclusion of a chiral cationic guest in the cavity of the chiral crown ether–polythiophene conjugate, the bithiophene unit was twisted to shorten the effective conjugation length of polythiophene backbone, enabling us to sense the guest binding by reading out the amplified optical signal gains arising from the backbone structure change. This strategy allowed us to discriminate the guest chirality without using chiroptical signals or a circular dichroism spectrometer to achieve the highest enantioselectivity of 7.3 for valine methyl ester with a 40‐fold enhanced sensitivity compared with the corresponding monomeric sensor.     

Neutron scattering of fragile antiferromagnetic phases in heavy fermion compounds

Results of neutron scattering and specific heat measurements are reported for two kinds of weak antiferromagnetic compounds corresponding to (i) the situation at the quantum critical point and (ii) the double magnetic transition observed in CeRu₂Ge₂.     

Synthesis, chemical properties and mutagenicity of 1,6- and 3,6-dinitrobenzo[a]pyrenes

Nitration of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) with HNO3 (d = 1.38) produced a mixture of dinitroBaPs (1,6- and 3,6-isomers) and mononitroBaPs (1-, 3- and 6-isomers). Pure 1,6-dinitroBaP and 3,6-dinitroBaP were obtained by the reduction of the dinitroBaPs mixture with NaSH to yield the separable products 1-amino-6-nitroBaP and 3-amino-6-nitroBaP, followed by conversion to dinitroBaPs via the the diazonium salts. The half-wave potentials (E1/2) corresponding to the one-electron reduction of dinitroBaPs were measured and the relationship of these values to the mutagenicity is discussed.     

Low temperature dependence of elastic moduli and internal friction for the glassy alloy Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5

Longitudinal and transverse wave velocities, eight kinds of elastic parameters, and dilational and shear internal frictions of Zr₅₅Cu₃₀Al₁₀Ni₅ glassy alloy were simultaneously measured as a function of temperature in the range from 77 to 373 K, using an ultrasonic pulse method. The inflections at around 150 K for wave velocities, anisotropy factor and Poisson's ratio, and the 150 K peak of shear friction seem to correspond to one topological change (pseudo‐transition) associated with an interatomic readjustment or vacancy rearrangements. The behaviors from 77 to 125 K and 125 to 373 K are due to thermal relaxation of squeezed free volumes and entropy elasticity associated with vibrational motions of clusters, respectively, accompanied by an increase in atomic distance. Photoinduced nitric oxide release from a nitrobenzene derivative in mitochondria

We report a novel NO donor (RpNO), containing a 2,6-dimethylnitrobenzene moiety for photocontrollable NO release and a rhodamine moiety for targeting to mitochondria. Photorelease of NO from RpNO in aqueous solution was confirmed by means of ESR analysis. Cellular release of NO from RpNO was confirmed with the aid of DAF-FM DA, an NO-specific fluorescence probe. RpNO was colocalized with MitoTracker Green FM, a mitochondrial stain, in HCT116 colon cancer cells and exhibited photodependent cytotoxicity. Our results indicate that RpNO is an effective NO donor for time-controlled, mitochondria-specific NO treatment.
