Beam-size measurement with optical diffraction radiation at KEK accelerator test facility

An experiment on the investigation of optical diffraction radiation (ODR) from a slit target as a possible tool for noninvasive electron beam-size diagnostics has been performed at the KEK accelerator test facility. The experimental setup has been installed at the diagnostics section of the extraction line. We have performed the first incoherent ODR observation from a slit target. The measured angular distributions are in reasonable agreement with the theoretical expectation. The beam-size effect onto the ODR angular pattern has been observed. Moreover, the sensitivity to the beam size as small as 14 microm has been achieved.     

An X-ray diffraction study of anharmonic thermal vibrations in the ionic conductor,barium chloride fluoride (BaClF)

Integrated intensities of X-ray reflections from a barium chloride fluoride single crystal were measured at 24, 180, 289, 402, 467 and 610°C. The intensities were used for the determination of the anharmonic potential parameters up to the third order. Harmonic potential parameters for each ion were obtained from the temperature dependence of thermal parameters, and anharmonic potential parameters were determined by the least-squares procedures, utilizing the temperature factor formalism based on the cumulant expansion. As a result, it has been found that the Ba²⁺ and Cl^? ions show an anharmonicity, while no significant anharmonic effect was detected for the F^? ion. From the potential calculated around the Cl^? and F^? ions, it was found that both Cl^? and F^? ions diffuse more easily within the (001) plane than along the c axis.     

Synthesis of oligomeric poly[(1, 2-propanediamine)-alt-(oxalic acid)] and anomalous proton conductivities of the thin films

New proton-conductive polyamide oligomers, oligomeric poly[(1, 2-propanediamine)-alt-(oxalic acid)], were synthesized to investigate the proton transport properties of bulk and thin films. The obtained oligomers were characterized by the X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectra, ¹H NMR, Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time of Flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrum, and electrical conductivity measurements. The bulk proton conductivity is 3.0 × 10^? 4 S cm^? 1 at the relative humidity (RH) of 80%. The proton conductivity of thin film is relatively higher than that of bulk sample. Thickness dependence of the proton conductivity was observed in these thin films. The maximum proton conductivity of the thin film is 4.0 × 10^? 3 S cm^? 1 at the relative humidity (RH) of 80%, which is higher one order magnitude than that of the bulk sample. The activation energies of bulk and 200 nm thick film are 1.0 and 0.69 eV at the RH of 60%, respectively.     

Parametric oscillation at 2.1 μm in periodically poled RbTiOAsO4

An Nd:YAG laser-pumped periodically poled RbTiOAsO₄ (PPRTA) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) near degeneracy is reported. At a pump power of 3.7 W, a net conversion efficiency of 43% was obtained. These crystals were found to be phase-matchable for the higher order quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic generation (SHG) in the visible range. Detailed analyses of the phase-matching properties for these processes were made by using the published Sellmeier and thermo-optic dispersion formulas.     

Light transmission through a circular metallic grating under broadband radial and azimuthal polarization illumination

We studied the characteristics of a circular metallic grating illuminated by broadband radial and azimuthal polarizations. We demonstrated that this scenario is the cylindrical analogue of a one-dimensional Cartesian grating illuminated by TM and TE polarizations. We measured the transmission spectra of this structure and observed strong polarization selectivity and, specifically, a resonance for radial polarization excitation, indicating a strong coupling to surface plasmons. The structure may be attractive for applications where pure radial polarization is needed, such as tight focusing, material processing, and particle trapping.     

Gauge coupling unification in grand unified theories with anomalous U1 symmetry

We show that in the framework of grand unified theory (GUT) with anomalous U(1)(A) gauge symmetry, the success of the gauge coupling unification in the minimal SU(5) GUT is naturally explained, even if the mass spectrum of superheavy fields does not respect SU(5) symmetry. Because the unification scale for most realizations of the theory becomes smaller than the usual GUT scale, it suggests that the present level of experiments is close to that sufficient to observe proton decay via dimension 6 operators, p-->e+pi.
