Domino Michael addition-carbene rearrangement-cyclization reaction of 1-alkynyl(aryl)-lambda3-bromanes with 2-mercapto-1,3-benzazoles

Exposure of 1-alkynyl[p-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl](tetrafluoroborato)-lambda3-bromanes to 2-mercaptobenzimidazole or benzothiazole in dichloromethane at 0 degrees C under argon resulted in a domino Michael addition-carbene rearrangement-cyclization reaction to produce directly tricyclic heterocycles in high yields, whereas the reaction with 2-mercaptobenzoxazole afforded 1-alkynyl sulfides.     

Transient DSC,a Novel and Rapid Method for Assessing Pharmaceutical Powder Compacts

The previously described method involving the use of transient DSC was applied to pharmaceutical powder compacts and to ceramic powder compacts. The samples were prepared by compressing powders of pentaerythritol tetraacetate and two kinds of alumina powder (differing in particle size distribution) up to a pressure of 20 MPa by using a jig. For pentaerythritol tetraacetate, a linear relationship was obtained between the parameter obtained by DSC and the compaction pressure. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Metric discrepancy results for subsequences of {θ k x}

We determine the set of possible constants appearing in the law of the iterated logarithm for discrepancies of subsequences of {?? ^k x}. We prove that the set coincides with the interval [?1/2, ?? _?? ?], where ?? _?? is the constant for {?? ^k x}. It implies that the discrepancies decrease if we take a subsequence of {?? ^k x}.     

Suppressed Migration and Enhanced Cisplatin Chemosensitivity in Human Cancer Cell Lines by Tuning the Molecular Mobility of Supramolecular Biomaterials

Cancer cells recognize physical cues transmitted from the surrounding microenvironment, and accordingly alter the migration and chemosensitivity. Cell adhesive biomaterials with tunable physical properties can contribute to the understanding of cancer cell responses, and development of new cancer therapies. Previously, it was reported that polyrotaxane-based surfaces with molecular mobility effectively modulate cellular functions via the yes-associated protein (YAP)-related signaling pathway. In the present study, the impact of molecular mobility of polyrotaxane surfaces on the migration and chemosensitivity of lung (A549), pancreatic (BxPC-3), and breast cancer (MDA-MB-231) cell lines is investigated, and it is found that the cellular spreading of adherent A549 and BxPC-3 cells and nuclear YAP translocation are promoted on low-mobility surfaces, suggesting that cancer cells alter their subcellular YAP localization in response to molecular mobility. Furthermore, low-mobility surfaces suppress cellular migration more than high-mobility surfaces. Additionally, low-mobility surfaces promote the cisplatin chemosensitivity of each cancer cell line to a greater extent than high-mobility surfaces. These results suggest that the molecular mobility of polyrotaxane surfaces suppresses cellular migration and enhances chemosensitivity via the subcellular translocation of YAP in cancer cells. Biointerfaces based on polyrotaxanes can thus be a new platform for elucidating cancer cell migration and chemoresistance mechanisms.     

Internal delivery of soft chlorine and bromine atoms: stereoselective synthesis of (E)-beta-halogenovinyl(aryl)-lambda3-iodanes through domino lambda3-iodanation-1,4-halogen shift-fluorination of alkynes

4-(Difluoroiodo)toluene-induced domino lambda(3)-iodanation-1,4-halogen shift-ring enlargement-fluorination reaction of 5-halopentynes with a four-, five-, or six-membered carbocycle afforded the ring-expanded (E)-delta-fluoro-beta-halovinyl-lambda3-iodanes stereoselectively in high yields, probably via the intermediacy of five-membered halonium ions. Use of internal alkynes makes it possible to synthesize tetrasubstituted beta-halovinyl-lambda(3)-iodanes with defined stereochemistry.

We determine the equation with integral coefficients of the modular, function fields with respect to the principal congruence subgroup ofSL ₂ (ℤ) of prime level.     

Twist decompositions of gluing homeomorphisms of planar Heegaard diagrams of genus two

We will give a very simple algorithm to decompose a gluing homeomorphism of a planar Heegaard diagram of genus two into Dehn twists associated with the canonical base.

     

Substrate-assisted laser patterning of indium tin oxide thin films

Maskless laser patterning of indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films was studied by the use of a diode-pumped Q-switched Nd:YLF laser. The ITO films were sputter-deposited either on lime glass, the standard substrate material for flat panel display applications, or fused quartz so that the efficiency of laser patterning as a function of substrate absorption could be studied. The laser wavelength was varied among infrared (5=1047 nm), visible (5=523 nm), and ultraviolet (5=349 nm and 5=262 nm). It is observed that strong light absorption by the substrate is a crucial requirement for a residue-free patterning of the ITO film. Observations and numerical calculations of the laser-induced surface temperature indicate that material removal occurs via thermal vaporization and that other mechanisms such as photochemical decomposition or spallation can be neglected.
