Inclusion of nonionic emulsifier inside polymer particles produced by emulsion polymerization

A general emulsion copolymerization of styrene and methacrylic acid was carried out with polyoxyethylene nonyl phenyl ether nonionic emulsifier. Surprisingly, about 75% of the nonionic emulsifier was included inside forming particles.     

Range Technique in Scattering Medium Using a Needle-Fiber Optical Coherence Tomography System

A needle-fiber optical coherence tomography (OCT) system designed for guiding epidural anesthesia to a target is presented. In the preliminary experiment, a desired target in tofu as a strong scattering medium can be monitored over a sufficient range of several millimeters within a short measuring time. The axial resolution is 21 μm. In order to investigate the ranging performance, the relation between background noise levels and focus-scattering properties in a confocal optical system is numerically studied by use of Monte Carlo technique. Numerical results indicate that an appropriate focal length of the lens attached to the fiber should be used to separate the OCT signal from strong noise in strongly scattered medium.     

Optical Learning Neural Network Using Photorefractive Waveguides

A model of an optical neural network with learning ability is proposed. We numerically evaluate the learning ability of the proposed network by using parameters determined by experiments. Adaptive connections between artificial neurons are implemented using photorefractive (PR) waveguides that can be optically modified by guided beams. The network consists of three layers and has bipolar weights within the limited range. The bipolar weight is encoded as the difference between optical power transmittances of signal beams in two channels of the PR waveguides. The adaptivity of the transmittance of PR waveguide is experimentally evaluated and is incorporated into the proposed network simulated in a computer. The proposed network is trained by a simplified local learning algorithm. Numerical results showed that the proposed three-layered network with six hidden neurons can solve the exclusive-or problem.     

Volume holographic imaging element with background noise reduction function for eye-gaze detection under white light illumination

Volume holographic optical element (VHOE) for imaging under white light illumination is integrated with imaging elements and background noise reduction filter. An integrated VHOE and the band pass filter which is optimized to the VHOE can develop the optical setup for a wearable eye-gaze detection system. An integrated VHOE is fabricated in photopolymer and then the effects of noise reduction filters as a function of the direction of the incident plane wave into an image sensor are evaluated. Experimental results show that the background noise reduction filter should be designed to reduce the incident light with wide direction of the transmitted light.     

(p, 4He) Elastic scattering at 350, 650, 1050 and 1150 MeV

Angular distributions of p-⁴He elastic scattering differential cross sections have been measured at 350, 650, 1050 and 1150 MeV, in regions of four-momentum transfer squared t = 0.02–0.71 (GeV/c)². These new measurements confirm the absence of a pronounced first diffraction minimum. New theoretical analyses are also presented.     

Encrypted optical memory system using three-dimensional keys in the Fresnel domain

An encrypted optical memory system using double random phase codes in the Fresnel domain is proposed. In this system, two random phase codes and their positions form three-dimensional keys for encryption of images and are used as keys to recover the original data. The third dimension is the positions of the codes, which can have as many as three degrees of freedom. Original images encrypted by use of the two phase codes located in the Fresnel domain are stored holographically in a photorefractive material. We demonstrate in preliminary experiments encryption and decryption of optical memory in a LiNbO(3) :Fe photorefractive crystal by use of angular multiplexing.     

The 4He(p,d)3He reaction at 770 MeV

The differential cross section of the ⁴He(p, d)³He pick-up reaction has been measured at E_p = 770 MeV. The data are analysed in the framework of the DWBA; both one-nucleon and one-N¹ transfers are considered.     

Simple measurement of14C in the environment using a gel suspension method

A simple analytical method for environmental¹⁴C with a low background liquid scintillation counter was developed. We used a new gelling agent, N-lauroyl-L-glutamic-α,γ-dibutylamide, for the liquid scintillation counting of¹⁴C as CaCO₃ (gel suspension method). Our procedure for sample preparation was much simpler than that of conventional methods and required no special equipment. The samples prepared with the standard sample of CaCO₃ were measured to evaluate the self absorption of the sample, the optimum condition of counting and the detection limit. Our results indicated that the newly developed technique could be efficiently applied for the monitoring of environmental¹⁴C.
