0+ analogue state in 118Sb from 117Sn(p,nγ) reaction

The analogue of the 0⁺ ground state in ¹¹⁸Sn has been observed in the compound nucleus ¹¹⁸Sb through ¹¹⁷Sn(p,n γ) ¹¹⁷Sb reaction. The neutron decays of this analogue resonance have been studied from the deexciting γ-rays of the residual nucleus ¹¹⁷Sb. From off resonance excitation functions, spin assignments have been made to states in ¹¹⁷Sb, on the basis of Hauser-Feshbach formalism. The resonance parameters of the isobaric analogue resonance have been determined, including the total, proton and neutron decay widths.     

Synthesis of cephalosporins carrying isoxazolyl acetamido and related side chains

Starting from 3,5-dimethylisoxazole the carboxylic acids I and V, the amino acids VIII (L-) and IX (D-), and the ureido acids X (L-) and XI (D-) were prepared, which were used for the synthesis of the new cephalosporins XVIIb, XXa-c (L-), and XXIb (D-). Thein vitro antibacterial activity of these semi-synthetic antibiotics was studied. Lattice-point examples for a question of Erdős

Here we establish a set of eight points in general position in the plane, i.e. no three on a line, no four on a circle, and they determine 7 distinct distances, so that, thei-th distance occursi times,i = 1, 2, , 7. The points are embedded in a triangular net, and the distances are not ordered by size or in any other way. We shall show that some known and unknown examples forn < 8 with the above properties may also be lattice points of a similar net.Research (partially) supported by the Hungarian National Foundation for Scientific Research (OTKA) grant, no. 1808.     

Diels-Alder chemistry on alkene functionalized films

A substrate-independent method has been devised for ring formation at solid surfaces. This entails the aminolysis reaction of allylamine with maleic anhydride pulsed plasma polymer films to yield terminal alkene groups at the surface. Subsequent exposure to 1,3-cyclohexadiene leads to a Diels-Alder type (4 + 2) cycloaddition reaction to give a mixture of endo- and exo-bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-2-ene rings.     

Gravimetric separation of titanium and zirconium from Niobium with Phenylacetylhydroxamic acid

Phenylacetylhydroxamic acid is used to separate titanium and zirconium from niobium in an oxalate medium at pH 6.5–7.5 in presence of ammonium chloride at room temperature. The method is accurate when the ratio of (TiO₂ + ZrO₂) : Nb₂O₅ is 10 : 1 to 1 : 1 ; when the niobium concentration is higher, reprecipitation is necessary. Tantalum, citrate, tartrate, lactic acid, EDTA, and a large excess of oxalate interfere.     

An integrated microfluidic device for influenza and other genetic analyses

An integrated microfluidic device capable of performing a variety of genetic assays has been developed as a step towards building systems for widespread dissemination. The device integrates fluidic and thermal components such as heaters, temperature sensors, and addressable valves to control two nanoliter reactors in series followed by an electrophoretic separation. This combination of components is suitable for a variety of genetic analyses. As an example, we have successfully identified sequence-specific hemagglutinin A subtype for the A/LA/1/87 strain of influenza virus. The device uses a compact design and mass production technologies, making it an attractive platform for a variety of widely disseminated applications.     

Synthesis and characterization of cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), palladium(II) and dioxouranium(VI) complexes of the antipyrine Schiff base of 3-formylsalicylic acid

A new Schiff base has been synthesized from 4-aminoantipyrine and 3-formylsalicylic acid. The ligand has a dianionic tetradentate compartmental OONO donor system. The cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II) and dioxouranium(VI) complexes exist in phenolato-bridged dinuclear species, while palladium(II) gives a mononuclear complex with free –COOH groups. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, i.r., u.v.-vis, thermal and magnetic measurements.     

Effect of tip functionalization on transport through vertically oriented carbon nanotube membranes

Ionic flux through a composite membrane structure, containing vertically aligned carbon nanotubes crossing a polystyrene matrix film, was studied as a function of chemical end groups at the entrance to carbon nanotubes' (CNTs) cores. Plasma oxidation during the membrane fabrication process introduced carboxylic acid groups on the CNTs' tips that were modified using carbodiimide mediated coupling between the carboxylic acid and an accessible amine groups of the functional molecule. Functionalization molecules included straight chain alkanes, anionically charged dye molecules, and an aliphatic amine elongated by polypeptide spacers. Functionalization was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy, and areal functional density was estimated by transmission electron microscopy studies of thiol terminated sites decorated by nanocrystalline gold. The transport through the membrane of two different sized but equally charged molecules (ruthenium bipyridine [Ru-(bipy)3(2+)] and methyl viologen [MV2+]) was quantified in a U-tube permeation cell by UV-vis spectroscopy. Relative selectivity of the permeates varied from 1.7 to 3.6 as a function of tip-functionalization chemistry. Anionic charged functional groups sharply increased the flux of the cationic permeates. This effect was reduced at higher solution ionic strength consistent with shorter Debye screening length. The observed selectivities were consistent with a hindered diffusion model with functionalization at the CNT tip and not along the length of the CNT core.
