Revaluation of the correlation of isomer shift with Np-O bond length in various neptunyl(V and VI) compounds

Summary The correlations of isomer shifts in various neptunyl(V and VI) compounds with crystallographic structures were revaluated. A linear correlation between the isomer shifts of neptunyl(VI) compounds and Np-O bond lengths of neptunyl group has been demonstrated. On the other hand, it has been evidenced that the isomer shifts of neptunyl(V) compounds are correlated much stronger with the mean Np-O distances in the crystals than the lengths in neptunyl(V) group.     

Asymmetric total syntheses of (+)-mycoepoxydiene and related natural product (-)-1893A: application of one-pot ring-opening/cross/ring-closing metathesis to construct their 9-oxabicyclo[4.2.1]nona-2,4-diene skeleton

The total syntheses of (+)-mycoepoxydiene and (-)-1893A have been completed. The present synthetic strategy features the use of one-pot ring-opening/cross metathesis (ROM/CM) followed by a ring-closing metathesis (RCM) reaction, allowing for the concise construction of the 9-oxabicyclo[4.2.1]nona-2,4-diene framework from a 7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-ene derivative and 1,3-butadiene. The sequential metathesis product was converted into (+)-mycoepoxydiene through the oxidative rearrangement of a furfuryl alcohol to a pyranone, thereby establishing its absolute stereochemistry. From the common intermediate, a structurally related natural product (-)-1893A was also synthesized via the vinylogous aldol reaction.     

Multi-turn time-of-flight mass spectrometers with electrostatic sectors

The mass resolution of a time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer is directly proportional to its total flight pathlength. Multi-turn or multi-passage ion optical geometries are necessary to obtain fight distances of sufficient length within reasonable size limitations. We have investigated ion optics for a multi-turn TOF mass spectrometer with electrostatic sectors. The concept of 'perfect' focusing conditions is introduced. Furthermore, a new type of multi-turn TOF mass spectrometer, the MULTUM Linear plus, was developed. It consists of four cylindrical electric sectors and 28 electric quadrupole lenses. It has a vacuum chamber 60 x 70 x 20 cm in size. Mass resolution is demonstrated to increase according to the number of ion cycles. A mass resolution of 350 000 (m/z = 28, FWHM) was achieved after 501.5 cycles. The MULTUM Linear plus analyzer is not simple, however; 28 electric quadrupole lenses are used. In order to reduce the number of ion optical parts, an improved multi-turn TOF mass spectrometer, the MULTUM II, consisting of only four toroidal electric sectors, was also developed. The possibility of tandem mass spectrometric applications using multi-turn TOF mass spectrometers is also discussed.     

Simultaneous determination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim in human plasma by capillary zone electrophoresis

A capillary electrophoretic method for the simultaneous determination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim in plasma was developed. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim extracted from human plasma with ethyl acetate were analyzed at 20 kV and 25 degrees C using 15 mm phosphate buffer (pH 6.2) as the electrolyte. The detection was by UV at 220 nm. The run time was 8.0 min and the limit of quantification was 10.00 microg/mL for sulfamethoxazole and 2.00 microg/mL for trimethoprim. The recovery was >99% for both compounds. This method enabled the detection of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim in plasma of patients after oral ingestion of their combined formulation. The present simple and rapid method is applicable to drug monitoring in immunocompromised patients who are taking the combined formulation of these compounds for the treatment or prophylaxis of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.     

Asymmetric synthesis of alpha-amino acids: indium-mediated reactions of glyoxylic oxime ether in aqueous media

The indium-mediated allylation and alkylation reactions of the Oppolzer camphorsultam derivative of glyoxylic oxime ether proceeded with excellent diastereoselectivity in aqueous media, providing a variety of enantiomerically pure alpha-amino acids.     

Magnetic properties of Pm in PrNi

A magnetic property of Pm as an impurity in PrNi single crystal was investigated by means of the low-temperature nuclear orientation of^143,144Pm. The angular distribution of -ray anisotropies revealed that the direction of hyperfine field experienced by the nuclei lie in the (a, c) plane andmade an angle of 60° (5) or 240° (5) with respect to the crystallinec-axis. From the temperature dependence of the anisotropies the strength of the hyperfine field of Pm in PrNi was deduced to be 185(22)T. The hyperfine field of Co at the Ni site of PrNi was found to be less than 4T.     

Synthesis of 4-fluorinated UDP-MurNAc pentapeptide as an inhibitor of bacterial growth

4-Fluorinated UDP-MurNAc pentapeptide, 2, has been synthesized. In our previous study, UDP-MurNAc pentapeptide analogue 1 was found to be incorporated into the bacterial cell wall through biosynthesis. Compound 2 showed growth-inhibition activity against Gram-positive bacteria when it was added to growth media at 0.01 mg/mL. [structure--see text]     

Solvent and substitution effects upon the phosphorescent triplet state of carbonyl pyridines

The effects of perturbing nitrogen upon localized triplet excitations are observed for several carbonyl pyridines. Conventional and pulse optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) techniques are used to characterize the spin-relaxation processes in these aromatic carbonyl molecules.
