Molecular and conformational properties of comb-like polymers with ionically bound side chains studied in organic solvent

Conformational and dynamo-optical properties of a homologous series of poly(cetyltrimethylammonium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonates) with molecular masses ranging from 80 to 700?kDa were studied in chloroform solutions by viscometry, dynamic light scattering, sedimentation, and flow birefringence. The Mark–Kuhn–Houwink Equations for this polymer in chloroform were obtained; the values of hydrodynamic diameter and the Kuhn segment length as well as the value of intrinsic anisotropy of polarizability of the monomer unit were defined.     

Selective Synthesis of 2,5‐Diformylfuran by Sustainable 4‐acetamido‐TEMPO/Halogen‐Mediated Electrooxidation of 5‐Hydroxymethylfurfural

A new method was developed for the selective gram‐scale synthesis of 2,5‐diformylfuran (DFF), which is an important chemical with a high application potential, via oxidation of biomass‐derived 5‐hydroxylmethylfurfural (HMF) catalyzed by 4‐acetylamino‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl (4‐AcNH‐TEMPO) in a two‐phase system consisting of a methylene chloride and aqueous solution containing sodium hydrogen carbonate and potassium iodide. The key feature of this method is the generation of the I₂ (co‐)oxidant by anodic oxidation of iodide anions during pulse electrolysis. In addition, the electrolyte can be successfully recycled five times while maintaining a 62–65 % yield of DFF. This novel method provides a sustainable pathway for waste‐free production of DFF without the use of metal catalysts and expensive oxidants. An advantage of electrooxidation is utilized in the preparation of demanding chemical.     

Hybridization and enzymatic extension of au nanoparticle-bound oligonucleotides

We have investigated the impact of steric effects on the hybridization and enzymatic extension of oligonucleotides bound to 12-nm colloidal Au particles. In these experiments, a nanoparticle-bound 12-mer sequence is hybridized either to its solution phase 12-mer complement or to an 88-mer template sequence. The particle-bound oligonucleotide serves as a primer for enzymatic extension reactions, in which covalent incorporation of nucleotides to form the complement of the template is achieved by the action of DNA polymerase. Primers were attached via-C(6)H(12)SH, -C(12)H(24)SH, and -TTACAATC(6)H(12)SH linkers attached at the 5' end. Primer coverage on the nanoparticles was varied by dilution with (5')HSC(6)H(12)AAA AAA(3'). Hybridization efficiencies were determined as a function of linker length, primer coverage, complement length (12-mer vs 88-mer), and primer:complement concentration ratio. In all cases, hybridization for the 88-mer was less efficient than for the 12-mer. Low primer surface coverage, greater particle-primer separation, and higher primer:complement ratios led to optimal hybridization. Hybridization efficiencies as high as 98% and 75% were observed for the 12-mer and 88-mer, respectively. Enzymatic extension of particle-bound primers was observed under all conditions tested; however, the efficiency of the reaction was strongly affected by linker length and primer coverage. Extension of primers attached by the longest linker was as efficient as the solution-phase reaction.     

利用共振镜生物传感器研究牛胰脱氧核糖核酸酶Ⅰ与DNA的相互作用

利用IAsys共振镜生物传感器研究了牛胰脱氧核糖核酸酶Ⅰ(Bp DNase Ⅰ)与DNA的相互作用.求出了不同温度下,Bp DNase Ⅰ与DNA相互作用的结合和解离的动力学速率常数(Kass,Kdiss)和平衡常数(KA,KD),并且计算出了该过程的热力学参数(ΔH和TΔS).在298 K时该结合过程的KA=(3.521 2±0.232 4)×105(mol/L)-1,KD=(2. 852 4±0. 188 3)×10-6 mol/L,TΔS 为(84. 860±3. 712) kJ/mol,该结合过程的ΔH 为(53.222±3.548) kJ/mol,是一个熵驱动的过程.本文还对Mg2 浓度对Bp DNase Ⅰ与DNA的相互作用的影响进行了研究.在相同温度下,Bp DNase Ⅰ与DNA的结合作用在有Mg2 存在时较无Mg2 存在时高约30.5 倍,表明Mg2 能极大地提高Bp DNase Ⅰ与DNA的结合能力.     

Recent results from the TCV tokamak

During the first two years of operation, the TCV tokamak has produced a large variety of plasma shapes and magnetic configurations, with 1.0B _tor1.46T,I _p800kA,k2.05, –0.71. A new shape control algorithm, based on a finite element reconstruction of the plasma current in real time, has been implemented. Vertical growth rates up to 1000s^–1 have been stabilized using the external coil system. Ohmic H-modes with Troyon factors ( _tor aB/I _p) up to two and densities up to 2.25×10²⁰m^–3, corresponding to the Greenwald limit, have been obtained in diverted discharges. Limiter H-modes with line averaged electron densities up to 1.7×10²⁰m^–3 have been obtained in elongated D-shaped plasmas with 360 kAI _P600 kA.Presented at 17^th Symposium Plasma Physics and Technology, Prague, June 13–16, 1995.This work was partly supported by the Fonds National Suisse de la Recherche Scientifique.     

The Berezin transform and radial operators

We analyze the connection between compactness of operators on the Bergman space and the boundary behaviour of the corresponding Berezin transform. We prove that for a special class of operators that we call radial operators, an oscilation criterion is a sufficient condition under which the compactness of an operator is equivalent to the vanishing of the Berezin transform on the unit circle. We further study a special class of radial operators, i.e., Toeplitz operators with a radial symbol.

     

Rhodium-Catalyzed Addition of Aryl Boronic Acids to 2,2-Disubstituted Malononitriles

β-Ketonitriles bearing a quaternary carbon at the 2-position were prepared through Rh-catalyzed addition of aryl boronic acids to 2,2-disubstituted malononitriles. In contrast to the previously described transnitrilative cyanation of aryl boronic acids with dialkylmalononitriles, the present reaction avoids retro-Thorpe collapse of the intermediate addition product through the use of a milder base. The reaction was amenable to a variety of aryl boronic acids and disubstituted malononitriles, providing a diverse array of β-ketonitriles. The products could be further derivatized to valuable chiral α,α-disubstituted-β-aminonitriles through addition reactions to the corresponding N-tert-butanesulfinyl imines.     

The Effect of Surface Site Ensembles on the Activity and Selectivity of Ethanol Electrooxidation by Octahedral PtNiRh Nanoparticles

Direct ethanol fuel cells are attractive power sources based on a biorenewable, high energy-density fuel. Their efficiency is limited by the lack of active anode materials which catalyze the breaking of the C−C bond coupled to the 12-electron oxidation to CO₂. We report shape-controlled PtNiRh octahedral ethanol oxidation electrocatalysts with excellent activity and previously unachieved low onset potentials as low as 0.1 V vs. RHE, while being highly selective to complete oxidation to CO₂. Our comprehensive characterization and in situ electrochemical ATR studies suggest that the formation of a ternary surface site ensemble around the octahedral Pt₃Ni₁Rh_x nanoparticles plays a crucial mechanistic role for this behavior.
