SPAR: stochastic programming with adversarial recourse

We consider a general adversarial stochastic optimization model. Our model involves the design of a system that an adversary may subsequently attempt to destroy or degrade. We introduce SPAR, which utilizes mixed-integer programming for the design decision and a Markov decision process (MDP) for the modeling of our adversarial phase.     

Observation and analysis ofE mesons in\bar p p annihilation at rest in H2 gas

Antiproton-proton annihilation at rest in a gaseous H₂ target at NTP into the final state π⁺ π^? K ^± π^? (K ⁰) with an undetectedK ⁰ or \(\bar K^0 \) has been investigated. We observe theE(1420) resonance in the invariant mass spectrum (K ⁰)_miss K ^± π^? with massM _E =1413±8 MeV/c² and widthГ ^E =62 ± 16MeV/c² and find evidence for the production of thef ₁(1285). The absolute branching ratio of \(\bar p\) p → π⁺ π^? E ⁰,E ⁰ →K ₀ ^L K ^± π ^? at (61±6)%P wave annihilation is (3.0±0.9)·10^?4 of all annihilations. The observed suppression of theE production fromP wave with respect to theS wave together with some simple selection rules suggest that the quantum numbers of theE(1420) areJ ^pc=0^?+ and not I⁺⁺.

Alkaline hydrolysis of 1-benzyl-4, 4-dicyanoethyl-5-oxo-1,3,4,5-tetrahydro-benzo-[cd]indole under controlled conditions leads to 4-benzyl-4,6,7,8-tetrahydro-10a, 6a-iminopropanoindolo[3,3a,4-gh]quinoline-9(10H),12-dione ( 2a ), the first representative of such a ring system. Alkylation of this di-lactam affords the N-monoalkyl ( 2b ), the N, N'-dialkyl ( 3 ), and the N, O-dialkyl ( 4 ) derivatives according to the conditions employed. Treatment of compounds such as 2 with sodium in liquid ammonia results in the opening of one of the lactam rings by a stereoelectronically controlled reductive cleavage of the benzylamine bond; subsequent protonation proceeds stereospecifically to give trans-octahydroindolo[3,3a, 4-gh]quinolines (viz. 5 ). The NMR. spectra and the mechanism of the reductive ring opening are discussed.     

Determination of moisture on thorium dioxide by a coulometric electrolytic measurement with electronic integration

The coulometric electrolytic principle is utilized for the measurement of moisture sorbed on sintered thorium dioxide. Moisture is removed from the sample by heating and is swept by dry argon gas through a hygrometer. The resulting hygrometer output is converted into frequency pulses and counted cumulatively. The instrument is calibrated by use of standard hydrated chemicals. The number of counts/mu;g of water obtained from standards compares favourably with the theoretical number of counts/mu;g calculated from performance specifications of the components employed. The error is <5% for 1-350mu;g of water. A high sensitivity and low operating blank recommends application of this method to materials other than thorium dioxide, having very low moisture contents.

Some chemical transformations in the series of the pyrrolo [3,2-b]azepines and the pyrrolo[3,2-c]azepines are reported: alkylation at the pyrrolo nitrogen and/or the azepino nitrogen, reduction of the lactam group by means of LiAlH₄, preparation of lactim ethers and amidines, substitution in position 2 by MANNICH reaction, bromination and condensation with oxalyl chloride or chloral hydrate, and the cyclocondensation with dimethylmalonyl chloride. The structures of the 2-substitution products have been evaluated by NMR.-spectroscopy.     

Incoherent tunnelling of positive muons and trapping by vacancies in electron-irradiated aluminium

We have measured the transverse spin relaxation of positive muons ⁺ in Al single crystals after irradiation at 150 K with 3 MeV electrons. The relaxation functions agree with those expected for diffusion-limited trapping of the ⁺ in monovacancies. Between 215 K and 60 K the ⁺ diffusivity is well described by the Flynn-Stoneham law (multi-phonon incoherent tunnelling between ground states) with an activation enthalpyH _a = (30±2) meV. At lower temperatures, few-phonon (in particular one-phonon) processes become important. The decrease of the vacancy concentration by a factor of 100 during annealing between 227 K and 267 K has been studied.
