A catalytic C?C bond‐forming reaction between aliphatic fluorohydrocarbons and arylsilanes

C? C coupling reactions between arylsilanes and alkylfluorides are efficiently catalyzed by disilyl cation 1. Primary as well as secondary alkylfluorides were quantitatively coupled with arylsilanes; however, in the case of tertiary fluorides, the hydrodefluorination reaction predominated. Primary alkylfluorides were found to give arenes with mostly rearranged alkyl substituents. In all cases subsequent Friedel–Crafts‐type chemistry occurred. On enhanced tuning capabilities of external cavity lasers using acousto-optic modulators

For an enhanced tuning of an external-cavity Littrow diode laser at 670 nm a new approach based on the frequency controlling of intra-cavity acousto-optic modulators (AOM) has been developed and tested. Using a method called “mode shaking” a nearly continuously laser tuning over a frequency range of 186 GHz (0.279 nm) within a time interval of 20 ms has been achieved. A further method called “far laser frequency jump” allows frequency changes of up to 1080 GHz (1.6 nm) between two spectral regions of the diode laser emission range within about 50 μs.

Molecular Motor Cycles: From Ratchets to Networks

Molecular motor cycles are studied in the framework of stochastic ratchets in which the motor moves along a 1-dimensional track, can attain M internal states, and can undergo transitions between these levels at K spatial positions. These ratchets can be mapped onto a stochastic network of KM discrete states. The network is governed by a Master equation, fulfills a vertex rule, and satisfies detailed balance in the absence of enzymatic activity and external force. Any pathway of the motor cycle which leads to a forward or backward step of the motor corresponds to a certain sequence of transitions spanning this network. The dependence of the motor velocity on the transition rates can be determined for arbitrary values of K and M and exhibits some simple and universal features.     

A Java-based control system for the Orsay tandem accelerator

A new control system was designed for the tandem MP-9 at Orsay. Because of the existing devices located on high voltage platforms and the lack of space inside the accelerator, in-house electronic cards based on micro-controllers and an optical fieldbus were developed to collect data. VME processors under VxWorks, a real time operating system, manage the fieldbus, concentrate the accelerator information and transmit it to the supervisory software through the ethernet network. This software consists of a collection of Java virtual machines (JVM) running on several Unix work-stations and PCs under Windows. Some of the Java virtual machines manage apparatus, instruments, local display and connections to an object database and VME concentrators. Other manage general synoptics. JVMs communicate between themselves with RMI protocol and JRPC with VME concentrators. So the supervisory software can be spread over several control stations throughout the network.     

Laccases ofRigidoporus lignosus andPhellinus noxius

A laccase that has been isolated previously (1) from the Basidiomycete,Rigidoporus lignosus, a white rot fungus of rubber tree, was used in the present study. When a thioglycolic lignin (TGL) was incubated in the presence of this enzyme, pronounced changes in the UV spectrum and size distribution of the substrate were observed. Sephadex gel filtration indicated that two types of reactions occurred: (1) A degradation of the polymer, as evidenced by the production of low-molecular-weight material; and (2) a condensation of some of the TGL molecules, as revealed by an increase in the fractions of higher molecular weight.
