A three-dimensional elliptic singular perturbation problem with discontinuous boundary values is considered. The solution of the problem is written in terms of a double integral. A saddle point analysis is used to obtain a first approximation, which is expressed in terms of a function that can be viewed as a generalization of the complementary error function. 相似文献
Diagnostic strategies can have various goals at two levels: to facilitate the diagnostic process on the cognitive level, and to serve considerations on the level of the doctor–patient relationship. Requests for laboratory tests could be intended to exclude a disease or to affirm the presence of disease. Thirdly, tactical motives to smoothen the negotiations between doctor and patient probably seem to be important as well. These three intentions differ in prior probability, should lead to different sets of tests, and to different interpretations. Even the cut-off points should differ. This leads to three different decision strategies, both at requesting, as at interpreting the results. Following this line of thought, post-test probabilities are more suitable than normal ranges. Excluding strategy: this is the most prevalent. However, the disadvantage of an excluding strategy (prior 1–5%) is a false-positive result. A positive test result should lead to follow-up by wait and see or by repeated testing. More extensive testing usually is not a very sensible strategy. In practice, physicians simply ignore slightly abnormal values. Mentally they put the cut-off points for normality more broader. The number of tests is small. Confirmative strategy: the disadvantage of a confirmative intention (prior 10–30%) is a false-negative result. Follow-up without testing, repeated testing, or even accepting marginal normal results as abnormal is a proper strategy. The number of tests is moderate to high. Tactical strategy: the tactical intention strategy to reassure the patient – or avoid referrals – could lead to ignoring all slightly positive test results by choosing a higher cut-off point. Actually, considering the usual insignificant diagnostic gain when testing for tactical reasons, all test results are clinically insignificant, unsuspected outliers excluded. Here, a very limited set of tests should be chosen. The laboratory test is the currency in mutual trading medical expectations and relationship considerations between doctor and patient. The number of tests is minimal. If the physician chooses a strategy, a limited range of prior probability is chosen. Then a possibly computerized algorithm produces a “Value (posterior probability)” as test result, replacing “Value (normal ranges)”. Thus one number less on the lab form, yielding more significant information.Presented at the 10th Conference Quality in the Spotlight, March 2005, Antwerp, Belgium 相似文献
This paper studies the impact of management policies, such as product allocation and campaign sizing, on the required size of the finished goods inventories in a multi-product multi-reactor batch process. Demand, setup and batch processing times for these products are assumed to be stochastic, and the inventory buffer for every product type needs to be such that target customer service levels are met. To perform this analysis, we develop a queueing model that allows us to explicitly estimate service levels as a function of the buffer size, and the allocation/campaign sizing policies. This model can be used to evaluate the service level given an existing buffer configuration, as well as to determine the buffer sizes required across products to meet a pre-specified service level. It also allows us to formulate a number of insights into how product allocation decisions and campaign planning policies affect buffer sizing decisions in symmetric production systems. 相似文献
The intracellular free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) could be correlated with the contractile response in rat mesangial cells using an apparatus which measured both biochemical processes simultaneously. Long-term pretreatment of mesangial cells with 12-O-tetradecanoly-phorbol 13-acetate (24 h, 500 nM) increased the (20 nM) angiotensin II-induced mobilization of Ca2+ and led to an enhanced and sustained contraction of the cells. The contractile response was delayed by approximately 3.5 s with respect to the intracellular increase in Ca2+ concentration. The simultaneous registration of Ca2+ transients and cell contractions confirms that [Ca2+]i is the major determinant of the angiotensin II-mediated mesangial cell contraction.Dedicated to Professor Horst H. Computer algebra algorithms are developed for evaluating the coefficients in Airy-type asymptotic expansions that are obtained from integrals with a large parameter. The coefficients are defined from recursive schemes obtained from integration by parts. An application is given for the Weber parabolic cylinder function. 相似文献
Current medical diagnostic echo systems are mostly using harmonic imaging. This means that a fundamental frequency (e.g., 2 MHz) is transmitted and the reflected and scattered higher harmonics (e.g., 4 and 6 MHz), produced by nonlinear propagation, are recorded. The signal level of these harmonics is usually low and a well-defined transfer function of the receiving transducer is required. Studying the acoustic response of a single contrast bubble, which has an amplitude in the order of a few Pascal, is another area where an optimal receive transfer function is important.
We have developed three methods to determine the absolute transfer function of a transducer. The first is based on a well-defined wave generated by a calibrated source in the far field. The receiving transducer receives the calibrated wave and from this the transfer functions can be calculated. The second and third methods are based on the reciprocity of the transducer. The second utilizes a calibrated hydrophone to measure the transmitted field. In the third method, a pulse is transmitted by the transducer, which impinges on a reflector and is received again by the same transducer. In both methods, the response combined with the transducer impedance and beam profiles enables the calculation of the transfer function.
The proposed methods are useful to select the optimal piezoelectric material (PZT, single crystal) for transducers used in reception only, such as in certain 3D scanning designs and superharmonic imaging, and for selected experiments like single bubble behavior.
We tested and compared these methods on two unfocused single element transducers, one commercially available (radius 6.35 mm, centre frequency 2.25 MHz) the other custom built (radius 0.75 mm, centre frequency 4.3 MHz). The methods were accurate to within 15%. 相似文献
New asymptotic approximations of the noncentral t distribution are given a generalization of the Student's t distribution. Using new integral representations, we give new asymptotic expansions not only for large values of the noncentrality parameter but also for large values of the degrees of freedom parameter. In some cases, we accept more than one large parameter. These results are not only in terms of elementary functions, but also in terms of the complementary error function and the incomplete gamma function. A number of numerical tests demonstrate the performance of the asymptotic approximations. 相似文献
Particle image velocimetry is used to study the motion of gas within a duct subject to the passage of a finite amplitude pressure wave. The wave is representative of the pressure waves found in the exhaust systems of internal combustion engines. Gas particles are accelerated from stationary to 150 m/s and then back to stationary in 8 ms. It is demonstrated that gas particles at the head of the wave travel at the same velocity across the duct cross section at a given point in time. Towards the tail of the wave viscous effects are plainly evident causing the flow profile to tend towards parabolic. However, the instantaneous mean particle velocity across the section is shown to match well with the velocity calculated from a corresponding measured pressure history using 1D gas dynamic theory. The measured pressure history at a point in the duct was acquired using a high speed pressure transducer of the type typically used for engine research in intake and exhaust systems. It is demonstrated that these are unable to follow the rapid changes in pressure accurately and that they are prone to resonate under certain circumstances. 相似文献
