We present highly sensitive Hall effect measurements of the heavy fermion compound CeCoIn5 down to temperatures of 55 mK. A pronounced dip in the differential Hall coefficient | partial differential rho(xy)/ partial differential H| at low temperature and above the upper critical field of superconductivity, H(c2), is attributed to critical spin fluctuations associated with the departure from Landau Fermi liquid behavior. This identification is strongly supported by a systematic suppression of this feature at elevated pressures. The resulting crossover line in the field-temperature phase diagram favors a field induced quantum critical point at mu(0)H(qc) approximately 4.1 T below H(c2)(T=0) suggesting related, yet separate, critical fields.  相似文献

We obtained a long-time-storage mechanism for spectral features in thulium ions doped into YAG by applying a magnetic field that splits the electronic ground state. We show experimentally that the storage time can be more than 30 s, which is 3 orders of magnitude longer than that of the metastable state that normally is used for information storage in this material. Level splitting and storage lifetimes for various magnetic field strengths of as much as 5 T were investigated. This storage mechanism will be relevant in the many coherent transient-based signal-processing schemes in which Tm:YAG is being used, and we demonstrate long-time storage in a basic data storage application.  相似文献

We experimentally investigate the mixing and demixing dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of a linear coupling between two internal states. The observed amplitude reduction of the Rabi oscillations can be understood as a result of demixing dynamics of dressed states as experimentally confirmed by reconstructing the spatial profile of dressed state amplitudes. The observations are in quantitative agreement with numerical integration of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations without free parameters, which also reveals the criticality of the dynamics on the symmetry of the system. Our observations demonstrate new possibilities for changing effective atomic interactions and studying critical phenomena.  相似文献

We report on the optimization of high-intensity absorption imaging for small Bose–Einstein condensates. The imaging calibration exploits the linear scaling of the quantum projection noise with the mean number of atoms for a coherent spin state. After optimization for atomic clouds containing up to 300 atoms, we find an atom number resolution of $\varDelta_{\rm det}= 3.7$ atoms, mainly limited by photon shot noise and radiation pressure.  相似文献

The magnetic susceptibility, using dc and electron spin resonance (ESR) methods, the specific heat, and the infrared properties of the one-dimensional molecular semiconductors lithium phthalocyanine (LiPc) and the iodinated compound LiPcI have been investigated for temperatures K. LiPc has a half-filled conduction band and is expected to be an organic metal. However, due to the strong Coulomb repulsion the system is a one-dimensional Mott-Hubbard insulator with a Hubbard gap of 0.75 eV as inferred from optical measurements. The localized electrons along the molecular stacks behave like a S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain. The spin susceptibility, as determined by ESR experiments, and the magnetic contribution to the heat capacity show a Bonner-Fisher type of behavior with an exchange constant K. LiPcI is an intrinsic narrow-gap semiconductor with an optical gap of 0.43 eV. In ESR experiments it is silent, indicating that all the unpaired electrons have been removed from the macrocycle via doping with iodine. Received: 16 June 1998 / Accepted: 14 July 1998  相似文献

We report on the experimental demonstration of the internal bosonic Josephson effect in a rubidium spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. The measurement of the full time dynamics in phase space allows the characterization of the theoretically predicted π-phase modes and quantitatively confirms analytical predictions, revealing a classical bifurcation. Our results suggest that this system is a model system which can be tuned from classical to the quantum regime and thus is an important step towards the experimental investigation of entanglement generation close to critical points.  相似文献

New germanium-platinum compounds with the filled-skutterudite crystal structure were synthesized. The crystal structure and composition were investigated by x-ray diffraction and microprobe analysis. Magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and electrical resistivity measurements evidence superconductivity in LaPt4Ge12 and PrPt4Ge12 below 8.3 K. The parameters of the normal and superconducting states were established. Strong coupling and a crystal electric field singlet ground state is found for the Pr compound. Electronic structure calculations show a large density of states at the Fermi level. Similar behavior with lower Tc was observed for SrPt4Ge12 and BaPt4Ge12.  相似文献
