High-spin structure in154Er

High spin states in the nucleus¹⁵⁴Er have been reinvestigated using the¹²³Sb(³⁵Cl, 4n) reaction and a variety of spectroscopic techniques including excitation functions,γ-γ coincidences,γ angular distribution and linear polarization measurements. From the measured energies, relative intensities and transition multipolarities a new level scheme has been deduced up to an excitation energy of ～12 MeV and spin 36. An interpretation of the experimental results is given in terms of the deformed Woods-Saxon orbitals. Gigantic backbending (superdeformation) effect is studied theoretically within the cranking model.     

Photochemical effects of KrF excimer excitation in laser-induced fluorescence measurements of OH in combustion environments

This paper presents experimental evidence that using the KrF excimer laser for quantitative laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) studies of the OH A-X (3,0) system is highly problematic if the effects of both photobleaching and photochemistry are not included for laser spectral irradiances greater than 20 MW/cm² cm^-1. Pump-probe and time-resolved measurements of the OH LIF signal in an atmospheric pressure, premixed CH₄-air flame at low- and high-laser-spectral-irradiance conditions show that a significant amount of OH is produced from photofragments resulting from the simultaneous 2-photon predissociation of H₂O molecules in the C-X system. A 5+2-level rate-equation model that includes the effects of both photobleaching and photochemical OH production is shown to satisfactorily predict the data using a single adjustable parameter given by the effective, spectrally integrated 2-photon cross-section of H₂O near 248 nm. The time-integrated OH LIF signal was found to depend on both the laser spectral irradiance and the local concentration of H₂O. Additionally, use of the KrF excimer laser for 2-line rotational thermometry can produce temperature errors as great as +550 K at high laser-pulse energies. The effect of oxygen vacancy on the oxide ion mobility in LaAlO3-based oxides

The electrical property of (La_1−xSr_x)_1−z(Al_1−yMg_y)O_3−δ (LSAM; x≤0.3, y≤0.15 and z≤0.1) was measured using the DC four-probe method as a function of temperature (500–1000°C) and oxygen partial pressure (1–10⁻²² atm). Among LSAMs, (La_0.9Sr_0.1)AlO_3−δ showed the highest ionic conductivity, σ_i=1.3×10⁻² S cm⁻¹ at 900°C. A simultaneous substitution at A and B sites or A site deficiency is expected to create larger oxygen vacancy and higher ionic conductivity. However, it showed a negative effect. The effect of the vacancy increase did not effect monotonously the ionic conductivity. It was found that the concentration of oxygen vacancy, [V_O], influences not only the oxide ion conductivity, σ_i, but also the mobility, μ_v, of [V_O]. These properties exhibit a maximum at around [V_O]=0.05. With the increase in [V_O], the activation energy, E_a, of the ionic conduction dropped from 1.8 to ca. 1.0 eV at [V_O]=0.05 and became almost constant at [V_O]>0.05. The dependency of the pre-exponential term, μ⁰_v, and E_a on [V_O] was analyzed and their effect on μ_v and σ_i was discussed with respect to crystal structure and defect association. It was estimated that the crystal structure mainly governs these properties. The effect of defect association could not be ignored but is considered to be a complicated correlation.     

A Kantorovich-type analysis of Broyden’s method using recurrent functions

We provide a semilocal convergence analysis for Broyden’s method for approximating locally unique solutions of nonlinear operator equations. Using the majorant principle we show that under the same or weaker hypotheses, in combination with our new idea of recurrent functions, we can find weaker sufficient conditions for the convergence of Broyden’s method as well as finer error bounds on the distances involved, and a more precise information on the location of the solution than before (Broyden, Math. Comput. 19:577–593, 1965; Chen, Ann. Inst. Stat. Math. 42:387–401, 1990; Dennis, Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Applications, pp. 425–472, Academic Press, San Diego, 1971; Li and Fukushima, Ann. Oper. Res. 103:71–97, 2001). Numerical examples are also provided involving polynomial, integral, and differential equations.     

Distributed feedback fiber laser pumped by multimode laser diodes

A distributed feedback fiber laser made of highly Er-Yb codoped phosphate glass fiber has been demonstrated experimentally. Efficient pump absorption allows for multimode pumping into the cladding of the active fiber. Output powers up to 160 mW have been achieved. The 35 mm long fiber laser device emits with >50 dB side mode suppression ratio.     

Conduction studies on electrodeposited indium selenide thin films

Indium Selenide thin films were electrodeposited on Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates from a mixture of Indium trichloride (InCl₃) and selenium dioxide (SeO₂) in aqueous solution by the potentiostatic electrodeposition technique. The InSe films showed that Mott’s variable-range hopping conductivity (VRH) is dominant under low field (∼2×10⁵ Vcm⁻¹) condition. At high field the Current-Voltage studies (in the temperature range 300 – 380 K) revealed that the conductivity of Indium selenide thin films is of Poole-Frenkel type. The plot drawn between Ln (I/V) and tV showed a straight line and also the experimental data and the theoretical data closely matches. Hence Poole-Frenkel mechanism is confirmed and discussed in detail. Paper presented at the 2nd International Conference on Ionic Devices, Anna University, Chennai, India, Nov. 28–30, 2003.
