On Ritt's Factorization of Polynomials

Ritt has shown that any complex polynomial p can be writtenas the composition of polynomials p₁,...,p_m, where each p_j isprime in the sense that it cannot be written as a non-trivialcomposition of polynomials. The factors p_j are not unique butthe number m of them is, as is the set of the degrees of thep_j. The paper extends Ritt's theory and, in particular, a thirdinvariant of the decomposition is introduced.

Laser cladding of copper with molybdenum for wear resistance enhancement in electrical contacts

Laser cladding of Mo on Cu has been attempted with the aim of enhancing the wear resistance and hence increasing the service life of electrical contacts made of Cu. In order to overcome the difficulties arising from the large difference in thermal properties and the low mutual solubility between Cu and Mo, Ni was introduced as an intermediate layer between Mo and Cu. The Ni and Mo layers were laser clad one after the other to form a sandwich layer of Mo/Ni/Cu. Excellent bonding between the clad layer and the Cu substrate was ensured by strong metallurgical bonding. The hardness of the surface of the clad layer is seven times higher than that of the Cu substrate. Pin-on-disc wear tests consistently showed that the abrasive wear resistance of the clad layer was also improved by a factor of seven as compared with untreated Cu substrate. The specific electrical contact resistance of the clad surface was about 5.6 × 10⁻⁷ Ω cm².     

Structure and conformational analysis of CFC-113 by density functional theory calculations and FTIR spectroscopy

Altitude-resolved volume mixing ratio profiles of CFC-113 have recently become available on a global scale with the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) satellite mission. However, the accuracy of the retrieval is currently limited by the uncertainties on the spectroscopic parameters of CFC-113. This paper reports on the geometrical structure, harmonic frequencies and intensities in the mid-infrared region of the two conformers of CFC-113 and the evaluation of whether theoretical calculations reproduce measurements. The calculations are performed using density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-311+G(3df) level. The molecular geometry parameters, the enthalpy difference and the potential barrier between conformers are calculated. The harmonic frequency of the normal modes of vibration are presented and accurately compared to experimental data. Overtones and combination bands are assigned in the 1200-2500 cm⁻¹ region.

Evaluation of separation quality in two-dimensional hyphenated chromatography

In this paper, a novel criterion named the overlap index (OVI) has been proposed to evaluate the separation quality in two-dimensional hyphenated chromatography. This criterion, which is obtained from the maximum value of the Gram determinant constructed by the key spectra, can reveal the degree of two-dimensional hyphenated chromatographic separation. The key spectra are selected based on the so-called D-optimal criterion. According to its geometrical sense meaning the volume spanned by the constructed vectors, OVI criterion can practically reflect the overlap degree of chromatographic peaks. The OVI criterion is further interpreted by comparing the resolution of two-dimensional data into pure chromatograms and spectra. The successful application of this OVI criterion to both of simulated two-dimensional hyphenated data and the real case in analyzing the six reference phenolic compounds from Ginkgo biloba L-leaves shows its reliability and practicality.     

Large gaps between the zeros of the Riemann zeta function

We show that the generalized Riemann hypothesis implies that there are infinitely many consecutive zeros of the zeta function whose spacing is three times larger than the average spacing. This is deduced from the calculation of the second moment of the Riemann zeta function multiplied by a Dirichlet polynomial averaged over the zeros of the zeta function.
