Cooperativity in multiple unusual weak bonds

This review covers two aspects concerning cooperativity in multiple weak bonds: a summary of literature results and a theoretical study of a complete series of model complexes. All the 15 combination of five weak bonds were explored: hydrogen bonds, hydric bonds, dihydrogen bonds, halogen bonds and ion–π interactions. Since in several cases there were no examples reported, a systematic exploration has been carried out on simple models at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level. The results thus obtained have been analyzed using the atoms in molecules methodology.     

Polymerization kinetics and microstructure of waterborne acrylic/alkyd nanocomposites synthesized by miniemulsion

Waterborne acrylic‐alkyd nanocomposites are expected to combine the positive properties of alkyd resins and acrylic polymers. In this work, the kinetics of the miniemulsion polymerization used to synthesize these nanocomposites and the effect of the process variables on the polymer architecture and particle morphology was investigated. It was found that resin hydrophobicity and the type of initiator strongly affected the microstructure of these materials. Tetrapterosides A and B,two new oleanane‐type saponins from Tetrapleura tetraptera

From the stem bark of Tetrapleura tetraptera, two new oleanane‐type saponins, tetrapteroside A 3‐O‐{6‐O‐[(2E,6S)‐2,6‐dimethyl‐6‐hydroxyocta‐2,7‐dienoyl]‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1 → 2)‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1 → 3)‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1 → 4)‐[β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1 → 2)]‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl}‐3,27‐dihydroxyoleanolic acid (1), and tetrapteroside B 3‐O‐{ β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1 → 2)‐6‐O‐[(E)‐feruloyl]‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1 → 3)‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1 → 4)‐[β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1 → 2)]‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl}‐3,27‐dihydroxyoleanolic acid (2), were isolated. Further extractions from the roots led to the isolation of four known oleanane‐type saponins. Spectrophotometric flow-injection determination of cellobiose dehydrogenase activity in fermentation samples with 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol

Cellobiose dehydrogenase activity (0.25–1 U Ml^?1) is monitored by oxidation of cellobiose to cellobionolactone, thus reducing 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol to a colourless compound. To prevent any β-glucosidase from reacting, gluconolactone is added as inhibitor. The sample throughput is 120 h^?1.     

Elementary constructive theory of Henselian local rings

Electron capture dissociation of peptide hormone changes upon opening of the tocin ring and complexation with transition metal cations

Electron capture dissociation (ECD) is an analytical technique in mass spectrometry (MS) that allows detailed structural study of biomolecules to gain insight in their function. In this work the ECD behavior of two peptide hormones oxytocin (OT1) and vasopressin (VP1) was studied. The results of OT1 and VP1 were compared to structural analogues OT2 and VP2, which have similar amino acid sequences but lack the tocin ring. The ECD results showed that both the fragment type (c/z versus b/y) and the cleavage sites (ring versus tail) changed upon opening of the tocin ring. All four peptides were complexed with three different transition metal cations (Zn²⁺, Ni²⁺ and Cu²⁺) and the ECD results were compared to those obtained from the doubly protonated species. The use of various metal ions yielded different cleavages sites within the same peptide. This can be an effect of the metal ion itself, or a consequence of a change in conformation as was suggested earlier. In addition, the type of fragment ion varied for each metal‐complexed peptide, which is in agreement with previous observations. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Equations of Hurwitz schemes in the infinite Grassmannian

The main result proved in the paper is the computation of the explicit equations defining the Hurwitz schemes of coverings with punctures as subschemes of the Sato infinite Grassmannian. Gold‐ or Platinum‐Catalyzed Cascade Processes of Alkynol Derivatives Involving Hydroalkoxylation Reactions Followed by Prins‐Type Cyclizations

An efficient method for the synthesis of [3.3.1]bicyclic compounds from easily available alkynol derivatives has been developed. The reaction is based on a gold‐ or platinum‐catalyzed tandem process that involves an intramolecular hydroalkoxylation of a triple bond followed by a Prins‐type cyclization. The reaction has been carried out with differently substituted alkynol derivatives and oxygen‐, nitrogen‐, and carbon‐centered nucleophiles. The incorporation of halogen atoms as nucleophiles and elimination reactions has also been studied. Enantiomerically pure [3.3.1]bicyclic systems were easily synthesized from the chiral pool.     

New chiral ionic liquids based on imidazolinium salts

The preparation and application of a new series of chiral ionic liquids are described. The salts are based on imidazolinium cations. Some of the cations also incorporated an axial chirality at the C(2) position next to the central chirality. These cations display a very high rotational barrier along the arene–imidazolinium axis. Furthermore, an analogue with a chiral anion was prepared. The salts have low melting points. Their potential as solvents and as chiral shift reagents was explored, resulting for the first time in an example of a chiral ionic liquid as a shift reagent for a neutral compound.
