Acceptable distortion and magnification of images on reflective surfaces in an augmented reality system

In this paper, we investigated the consistency of visual perception for the change of reflection images in an augmented reality setting. Reflection images with distortion and magnification were generated by changing the capture position of the environment map. Observers evaluated the distortion and magnification in reflection images where the reflected objects were arranged symmetrically or asymmetrically. Our results confirmed that the observers’ visual perception was more sensitive to changes in distortion than in magnification in the reflection images. Moreover, the asymmetrical arrangement of reflected objects effectively expands the acceptable range of distortion compared with the symmetrical arrangement.     

Personal and atmospheric concentrations of ozone in southeastern hyogo prefecture, Japan

Twenty-one data sets composed of readings collected by atmospheric ozone monitors worn by individuals on their clothing and installed outside their home or office were collected using Ogawa passive ozone samplers in southeastern Hyogo prefecture, Japan from September 12 to 13, 2011. The concentrations of personal and outdoor ozone ranged from not detectable to 23.2?ppb and from 4.7 to 38.3?ppb, respectively. The mean concentration of personal exposure to ozone was 3.7?ppb and was significantly lower than that of outdoor ozone (18.5?ppb). This suggests that the concentrations of outdoor ozone affect personal ozone exposure. However, in this study, we found no correlation between the concentrations of personal ozone and the total time spent outdoors or the time of day the individual was outside. In contrast, the mean concentrations of outdoor ozone were similar to those of ozone measured at the 12 nearest Ambient Monitoring Stations (AMSs). However, when the AMS was situated near a main road, the regional ozone levels were underestimated.     

One-step preparation of chitosan-coated cationic liposomes by an improved supercritical reverse-phase evaporation method

High-pressure carbon dioxide in contact with water dissolves to form carbonic acid, causing a decrease in pH. By use of these characteristics of a CO2/H2O biphasic system, chitosan-coated cationic liposomes of l-alpha-dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine were successfully prepared by an improved supercritical reverse-phase evaporation (ISCRPE) method. Liposome-chitosan complexes carrying a positive charge were prepared in a single-step procedure without the use of acid or organic solvent, including ethanol. The maximum trapping efficiency of liposomes prepared by the ISCRPE method was 17%, with or without the addition of chitosan, compared to only 2% for liposomes prepared by the Bangham method. Furthermore, the liposomal dispersion was stable at room temperature in a sealed tube for over 30 days.     

Preparation of liposomes using an improved supercritical reverse phase evaporation method

Liposomes of various phospholipids were prepared using an improved supercritical reverse phase evaporation (ISCRPE) method that utilizes supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) as an alternative to organic solvents. Using this method, in the absence of any organic solvent including ethanol, the maximum trapping efficiency of glucose reached 36% for 20 mM l-alpha-dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC), compared to less than 10% using the Bangham method. Liposomes prepared by the ISCRPE method were highly stable for one month at room temperature. Freeze fractured TEM observations, osmotic shrinkage measurements, and DSC measurements revealed that the liposomes prepared by the ISCRPE method are unilamellar vesicles with loosely packed phospholipids. Comparison of nitrogen with scCO(2) revealed that the presence of CO(2) is necessary for the formation of liposomes.     

Organocatalytic direct michael reaction of ketones and aldehydes with beta-nitrostyrene in brine

We have developed a direct, asymmetric Michael reaction that can be performed in brine or seawater without addition of organic solvents. A bifunctional catalyst with long hydrophobic alkyl chains efficiently catalyzed Michael reactions and afforded the desired products in excellent yield with high enantiomeric excess, even when only an equal molar ratio of the donor to acceptor was used.     

Gravitational Effects on Mixing and Growth Morphology of an In0.5Ga0.5 System

A mixing experiment of multicomponents melts was performed using a uniform temperature furnace in the Second International Microgravity Laboratories (IML-2) mission. Growth morphologies and Ga concentration profiles were analyzed for the samples with the compositional ratio of 0.5 In–0.5 Ga–1.0 Sb grown under microgravity and on earth. The sample with free surface grown under microgravity was nearly spherical in shape, except some parts with projections. Ga was dispersed homogeneously in the bulk because the mixing was enhanced by Marangoni convection due to the concentration gradient. On the other hand, the sample grown on earth was a double cylindrical shape with different diameters, and Ga concentration decreased from top to bottom, showing clearly the effect of gravity. Many needle crystals were formed in both space and earth samples due to rapid cooling. The average size of the needle crystals grown in space was larger than that of the earth sample.
