Effect of nickel coating on electrochemical performance of graphite anodes for lithium ion batteries

Among the different materials often studied and proposed as negative electrodes for lithium-ion batteries, graphite anodes are the most used in commercial batteries. For this study, synthetic graphite was tested. During the first discharge 0.2 Li ions were consumed for the formation of the SEI film and the capacity reaches about 387 mAh/g. But at the end of the first charge only 72% of the initial charge was recovered (the reversible capacity is about 279 mAh/g). In order to improve this performance we have deposited metallic nickel on graphite with the intention to obtain a homogeneous thin layer able to modify the nature of the SEI film, to allow the diffusion of lithium ions through the protective layer, and also to increase the performance of graphite electrodes. The results show a decrease of the irreversible capacity loss (16% instead of 28% for pure graphite electrodes) as well as better cycleability for a nickel-deposited graphite electrode with only 11% weight ratio of nickel. On the other hand, an increase of the nickel content decreases this performance.     

Ordered states and structural transitions in a system of Abrikosov vortices with periodic pinning

A system of Abrikosov vortices in a quasi-two-dimensional HTSC plate is considered for various periodic lattices of pinning centers. The magnetization and equilibrium configurations of the vortex density for various values of external magnetic field and temperature are calculated using the Monte Carlo method. It is found that the interaction of the vortex system with the periodic lattice of pinning centers leads to the formation of various ordered vortex states through which the vortex system passes upon an increase or a decrease in the magnetic field. It is shown that ordered vortex states, as well as magnetic field screening processes, are responsible for the emergence of clearly manifested peaks on the magnetization curves. Extended pinning centers and the effect of multiple trapping of vortices on the behavior of magnetization are considered. Melting and crystallization of the vortex system under the periodic pinning conditions are investigated. It is found that the vortex system can crystallize upon heating in the case of periodic pinning.     

Finitely generated simple algebras: A question of B. I. Plotkin

In his recent series of lectures, Prof. B. I. Plotkin discussed geometrical properties of the variety of associativeK-algebras. In particular, he studied geometrically noetherian and logically noetherian algebras and, in this connection, he asked whether there exist uncountably many simpleK-algebras with a fixed finite number of generators. We answer this question in the affirmative using both crossed product constructions and HNN extensions of division rings. Specifically, we show that there exist uncountably many nonisomorphic 4-generator simple Ore domains, and also uncountably many nonisomorphic division algebras having 2 generators as a division algebra. On Brennan's Conjecture for a Special Class of Functions

In this paper, we prove Brennan's conjecture for conformal mappings f of the disk {z : | z| < 1} assuming that the Taylor coefficients of the function log(zf′(z)/f(z)) at zero are nonnegative. We also obtain inequalities for the integral means over the circle |z| = r of the squared modulus of the function zf′(z)/f(z).     

Polarization dynamics of intracavity frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser

Experimental study of low-frequency dynamics of an intracavity frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser demonstrates the influence of the interaction of orthogonally polarized modes, participating in frequency doubling (type II phase matching), on the stability of the laser output. At a sufficiently low pump rate and low conversion efficiency, the laser shows stable operation with a low noise level at the frequencies of relaxation oscillations. At a high pump power and/or a high conversion efficiency, the laser emission becomes unstable as a result of Hopf bifurcation at the frequencies of relaxation oscillations that are responsible for the anti-phase polarization dynamics of the laser.     

What Oxidation State of Iron Determines the Amethyst Colour?

A colourless quartz crystal doped with ⁵⁷Fe³⁺ was obtained by hydrothermal synthesis in an NH₄F solution. The crystal was transformed into violet amethyst by gamma-irradiation. The change in colour was accompanied by changes in the Mössbauer spectrum that can be interpreted as the conversion of trivalent iron into the tetravalent state: Fe³⁺→Fe⁴⁺.

Self‐assembly of amphiphilic tris(2,2′‐bipyridine)ruthenium‐cored star‐shaped polymers

Amphiphilic tris(2,2′‐bipyridine)ruthenium‐cored star‐shaped polymers consisting of one polystyrene block and two poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) blocks were prepared by the “arm‐first” method in which RAFT polymerization and nonconvalent ligand–metal complexation were employed. The prepared amphiphilic star‐shaped metallopolymers are able to form micelles in water. The size and distribution of the micelles were studied by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Preliminary studies indicate that the polymer concentration and the hydrophilic poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) block length can affect the morphologies of the formed metal‐interfaced core–shell micelles in water. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Study of the dissolution and growth of salt single crystals in inhomogeneous acoustic fields: I. A standing acoustic wave

The growth of the isolated (100) face of a KDP crystal at exposure of the phase boundary to the initial ultrasound field and a standing acoustic wave has been investigated. A significant growth response of this face, exposed to sound normally along the acoustic axis in the near zone of a piston-like half-wave vibrator with f = 20 kHz and tangentially in the pulsed two-frequency (f = 600 and 900 kHz) standing-wave mode, has been revealed. It is shown that the mechanisms of mass exchange enhancement in these acoustic modes are different. The results obtained show a fundamental possibility of controlling crystal growth and dissolution by varying the parameters of inhomogeneous acoustic field.
