Chemically modified dansyl probes: a fluorescent diagnostic for ion and proton detection in solution and in polymers

[reaction: see text] The fluorescence emission intensity of the dansyl group is significantly diminished upon appending an ethyldimethylamino group to the N1 nitrogen substituent. Addition of acids and metal ions (i.e., Zn(2+)) to solutions of trimethylethylenediamine naphthalene sulfonamide (trinsyl) 2 produces a >25-fold increase in fluorescence intensity. Trinsyl probe 2 has been used as a diagnostic for the diffusion of protons and metal ions in a network polymer as well as an optical reporter for the glass transition temperature.     

The Boolean functions computed by random Boolean formulas or how to grow the right function

We characterize growth processes (probabilistic amplification) by their initial conditions to derive conditions under which results such as Valiant's 24 hold. We completely characterize growth processes that use linear connectives and generalize Savický's 19 analysis to characterize growth processes that use monotone connectives. Additionally, we obtain explicit bounds on the convergence rates of several growth processes, including the growth process studied in Savický. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Random Struct. Theory of the effect of geomagnetic field on plug-and-play schemes for fiber-based quantum key distribution systems

We quantify the instantaneous polarization rotation of the optical field by the Faraday birefringence in a long spun-fiber link terminated by a Faraday mirror. Obtained analytical results agrees well with computer simulations and are consistent with previous experimental findings.
