Application of continuous zone-drawing/zone-annealing method to poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibers

A continuous zone-drawing/zone-annealing method was applied to poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibers in order to improve their mechanical properties. Apparatus used for this treatment was assembled in our laboratory. The continuous zone-drawing treatment was carried out at a drawing temperature of 103°C under an applied tension of 6.6 MPa to fully orient amorphous chains in the drawing direction without inducing thermal crystallization. The continuous zone-annealing treatment was carried out twice at an annealing temperature of 160°C under 102.2 MPa and at 183°C under 161.1 MPa to crystallize the highly oriented amorphous chains. The fiber was continuously drawn and annealed at a rate of 420 mm/min. The fiber obtained had a birefringence of 0.260, a degree of crystallinity of 55%, a tensile modulus of 18 GPa, and a storage modulus of 21 GPa at 25°C. Despite the large difference in the treating speed between the continuous zone-annealing and zone-annealing, their values are approximately equal to those of the zone-annealed PET fiber that was reported previously. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Examination of Changes in 6-minute Walk Distance and Related Factors in Patients with Perioperative Peripheral Arterial Disease

Objective: This study aimed to clarify the effects of pre- and postoperative physical function on the 6-minute walking distance (6MWD) in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Method: Forty-two elderly patients with PAD who were hospitalized for revascularization and able to walk independently were included in the study. The 6MWD, ankle brachial index (ABI), weight-bearing index (WBI), gait, and intermittent claudication distance (ICD) were measured before and after the surgery, and skeletal muscle index was measured only before surgery. Analyses were performed by comparing the pre- and postoperative values of each factor using a paired t-test. In addition, multiple regression analysis was performed with 6MWD as the dependent variable before and after surgery. Results: Postoperatively, pain disappeared in 22 patients, and ABI, ICD, 6MWD, and stride length improved significantly. ICD and stride length were extracted as factors related to 6MWD before and after surgery, and ABI, WBI, and stride length were extracted as factors related to 6MWD after surgery. Conclusion: The improvement of intermittent claudication associated with revascularization suggests a stronger influence of functional aspects on postoperative 6MWD.     

Highly Enantioselective Asymmetric Autocatalysis of Pyrimidin‐5‐yl Alkanol Induced by Chiral 1,3‐Disubstituted Hydrocarbon Allenes

1,3‐Disubstituted chiral allenes without any heteroatoms act as chiral initiators in the addition of (i‐Pr)₂Zn to pyrimidine‐5‐carbaldehyde to afford, in combination with the subsequent asymmetric autocatalysis, chiral pyrimidin‐5‐yl alkanols with up to 98% ee. The absolute configuration of the pyrimidin‐5‐yl alkanol formed depend on that of the chiral allene.     

Oxidative coupling polymerization of 4‐methyltriphenylamine

4‐Methyltriphenylamine was oxidatively polymerized in chloroform (CL) or propylene carbonate (PC) in the presence of ferric chloride (FeCl₃) at 50°C. Polymerization proceeded more rapidly and the molecular weight of the resulting polymer was higher in CL than in PC due to the higher oxidation potential of the solution. The linear structure was confirmed by ¹³C NMR, and the resulting polymer exhibited high thermal stability and electrochemical activity.     

Synthesis and Magnetic Properties of (Pyrrolidin‐1‐oxyl)–(Nitronyl Nitroxide)/(Iminonitroxide)‐Dyads

Unlike extensively studied diradicals linked by π‐conjugated systems, only a few studies have investigated weakly coupled diradicals linked by an sp³ carbon atom. Herein, we prepared pyrrolidin‐1‐oxyl–(nitronyl nitroxide)‐dyad 5 and pyrrolidin‐1‐oxyl–iminonitroxide‐dyad 6 . From the observed temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, 5 and 6 were determined to be in singlet ground states with 2J_intra/k_B=?35.2 K and ?13.6 K, respectively. From these results and theoretical calculations of related diradicals, the spin‐polarization model counting the small spin density of the sp³ carbon atom could be used as a spin‐prediction model.
