Lattice softening in K2Pt(CN)4Br0.3·3H2O

The temperature dependences of the elastic constants, c₁₁, c₃₃, c₄₄, and c₆₆, in KCP are described. In the temperature range 10–100 K softening is observed in c₄₄, while c₆₆ decreases almost linearly with decreasing temperature. These results indicate the presence of a new critical region.     

Development of a new file search system for nuclear magnetic resonance spectra: Production of an Enlarged Data Base and Search Test

A practical search system for proton n.m.r. spectra is reported. The coding rules and search algorithms are described in detail. Data for 8000 spectra have been converted into a computer-readable file from printed charts. Several search tests are used to evaluate the usefulness of the search system, and various effects of experimental conditions such as different instruments, frequencies and solvents on recall efficiency are described. The results presented indicate that the system should be applicable to routine analytical work.     

Surface modification of polymer latex particles by AGET ATRP of a styrene derivative bearing a lactose residue

Grafting of a styrene derivative bearing a lactose residue, i.e., N-2-4-(vinylbenzenesulfonamido)ethyl lactobionamide (VBSAELA), onto polymer latex particles was carried out in aqueous media by activator generated electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (AGET ATRP). The core polymer latex particles having α-chloroester groups as ATRP-initiating groups were prepared by miniemulsion polymerization of styrene and 2-chloropropionyloxyethyl methacrylate (CPEM) in the presence of a polymerizable surfactant, i.e., N,N-dimethyl-N-dodecyl-N-2-methacryloyloxyethylammonium bromide (C₁₂Br). AGET ATRP was initiated with tris[(2-pyridylmethyl)amine] copper (II) dichloride and l-ascorbic acid. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) revealed that the P(St-CPEM)-g-P(VBSAELA) particles possess graft layers of 10 nm in thickness on the core particles of 91 nm in diameter. Critical coagulation concentration measurement revealed that the dispersion stability of the particles in water increased due to hydrated P(VBSAELA) shell layers. Adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) onto the particles was considerably suppressed by the hydrated shell layers.     

Experimental demonstration of spin geometric phase: radius dependence of time-reversal Aharonov-Casher oscillations

A geometric phase of electron spin is studied in arrays of InAlAs/InGaAs two-dimensional electron gas rings. By increasing the radius of the rings, the time-reversal symmetric Aharonov-Casher oscillations of the electrical resistance are shifted towards weaker spin-orbit interaction regions with their shortened period. We conclude that the shift is due to a modulation of the spin geometric phase, the maximum modulation of which is approximately 1.5 rad. We further show that the Aharonov-Casher oscillations in various radius arrays collapse onto a universal curve if the radius and the strength of Rashba spin-orbit interaction are taken into account. The result is interpreted as the observation of the effective spin-dependent flux through a ring.     

Development of a Two-Dimensional Bar-Code Detection System Using Multi Laser Diodes with Time-Sharing Light Emission Operation

A new high-speed two-dimensional bar-code detection system using multi laser diodes with time-sharing light emission operation has been developed. A bias current allowing the laser diode to improve the light output rise time was optimized to slightly below the threshold of the diode, so that channel cross-talk among three-line bar-code signals caused by the bias light can be kept small and a high-speed pulse modulation operation can be achieved. The prototype system for a three-line bar code with spatially overlapping laser-diode heads has achieved an effective scanning speed two and nine tenths times that of conventional scanners. It is estimated that the number of time-sharing light emission laser diodes can be increased to at least four when the current photodetection amplifier with a bandwidth of 6.4 MHz is used. This number can be improved to six by using photodetection amplifiers with double the bandwidth of the present ones.     

Metal-insulator transition investigation in V2O3 by nuclear magnetic resonance and relaxation

The high temperature metal-insulator transition in pure V₂O₃ has been investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance and relaxation. The relaxation rate in the range 160–320K was found to satisfy the Korringa relaxation and at temperature above 550K to be constant as expected for a paramagnetic insulator. In the intermediate temperature range the high field resonance line shape showed broadening which we interpret as due to the coexistence of a metallic and an insulating phase.     

Enzymatic transformations of 3-chloroalanine into useful amino acids

The investigation of the combination of enzymatic and chemical synthetic processes for the production of useful compounds has been carried out. This review focuses on the enzymatic transformation of chemically synthesized 3-chloroalanine into useful amino acids.
