XPS study of laser fabricated titanium/KaptonFN interfaces

KaptonFN film consists of a polyimide core that has been laminated with FEP fluoropolymer outer layers. This composite material's resistance to most chemical solvents, heat sealability and low moisture uptake make KaptonFN attractive as a packaging material for electronics and implantable devices. KaptonFN/Ti micro-joints were fabricated by using focused infrared laser irradiation. The micro-joints were mechanically debonded, and the KaptonFN/Ti interfaces were studied by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The locus of failure of the joints was found to be in the FEP layer near the interface with the Ti. The XPS results give evidence for the formation of TiF bond in the interfacial region.

Insights into the Protective Effects of Thymoquinone against Toxicities Induced by Chemotherapeutic Agents

The drugs used to treat cancer not only kill fast-growing cancer cells, but also kill or slow the growth of healthy cells, causing systemic toxicities that lead to altered functioning of normal cells. Most chemotherapeutic agents have serious toxicities associated with their use, necessitating extreme caution and attention. There is a growing interest in herbal remedies because of their pharmacological activities, minimal side effects, and low cost. Thymoquinone, a major component of the volatile oil of Nigella sativa Linn, also known as black cumin or black seeds, is commonly used in Middle Eastern countries as a condiment. It is also utilized for medicinal purposes and possesses antidiabetic, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, anti-microbial, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant properties. This review attempts to compile the published literature demonstrating thymoquinone’s protective effect against chemotherapeutic drug-induced toxicities.     

Simultaneous Quantitation of Captopril and NSAID's in API,Dosage Formulations and Human Serum by RP‐HPLC

An accurate, sensitive and least time consuming reverse phase high performance liquid chromatographic (RP‐HPLC) method for the estimation of captopril in the presence of non steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs in formulation and human serum has been developed and validated. Chromatographic separation was conducted on prepacked Purospher star C18 (5 μm, 25 × 0.46 cm) column at room temperature using methanol:water (80:20 v/v) as a mobile phase, pH adjusted at 2.8 with o‐phosphoric acid and at a flow rate of 1.0 mL min⁻¹, while UV detection was performed at 227 nm. The limit of detection and quantification for captopril were 1 and 0.35 ng mL⁻¹, while that for (NSAID's) i.e. flurbiprofen, ibuprofen, diclofenac sodium and mefenamic acid LOD were 0.2, 1, 2 and 0.4 ng mL⁻¹ respectively and LOQ were 0.9, 2.9, 8 and 1 ng mL⁻¹ Analytical recovery was > 98.1%. The method used for the quantitative analysis of commonly administered non steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAID's) i.e. ibuprofen, flurbiprofen, diclofenac sodium and mefenamic acid alone or in combination with captopril from API (active pharmaceutical ingredients), dosage formulations and in human serum. The established method is rapid (RT < 12 min), accurate (recovery > 98.1%), selective (no interference of excepients and other commonly used drugs and food) and sensitive (LOQ 3.5 ng mL^;‐1) and reproducible (SD ± 0.003).     

Peristaltic flow of a Carreau fluid in a channel with different wave forms

This investigation deals with the peristaltic motion of a Carreau fluid in a planar channel by employing long wavelength approximation. Five wave forms are chosen. Explicit solutions of longitudinal velocity and pressure gradient are derived. The pumping and trapping phenomena are properly examined. Effects of temperature,pH, and ionic strength on the adsorption of nanoparticles at liquid–liquid interfaces

The effects of temperature, pH and sodium chloride (NaCl) concentration on the equilibrium and dynamic interfacial tension (IFT) of 4.4-nm gold nanoparticles capped with n-dodecanethiol at hydrocarbon–water interfaces was studied. The pendant drop technique was used to study the adsorption properties of these nanoparticles at the hexane–water and nonane–water interfaces. The physical size of the gold nanoparticles was determined by TEM image analysis. The interfacial properties of mixtures of these nanoparticles, having different sizes and capping agents, were then studied. The addition of NaCl was found to cause a decrease of the equilibrium and dynamic IFT greater than that which accompanies the adsorption of nanoparticles at the interface in the absence of NaCl. Although IFT values for acidic and neutral conditions were found to be similar, a noticeable decrease in the IFT was found for more basic conditions. Increasing the temperature of the system was found to cause an increase in both dynamic and equilibrium IFT values. These findings have implications for the self-assembly of functionalized gold nanoparticles at liquid–liquid interfaces.     

Sample preparation and gas chromatography of primary fatty acid amides

A method for the isolation of bio-active primary fatty acid amides (PFAM's) from total lipid extract by solid-phase extraction (SPE) was developed and validated. The lowest mass of amide to be loaded and recovered by this method was detected as 0.5 microg using 500 mg of normal phase adsorbent. The isolated PFAM's were separated and quantified by GC/MS and percent recoveries were calculated. An HP-5MS column was able to provide base line separation between the saturated and unsaturated PFAM's whereas clear resolution between geometric and positional isomers having the same number of carbons was obtained using a BPX70 column. The separated amides were all 18 carbon analogs of cis-9-octadecenoamide (oleamide). Detection limits in the single ion monitoring mode were found to be on the order of 10 pg in a 1 microl injection. Solid phase extraction of amides from total lipid extract before GC/MS analysis provides clean detection and interference free analysis.     

New flavonoids from <Emphasis Type="Italic">Punica granatum</Emphasis> flowers

Two new flavonoids were isolated from the flowers of Punica granatum Linn. (Punicaceae) along with the known compounds ellagic acid, gallic acid, sucrose, and gallic acid glycoside. The structures of the new flavonoids have been characterized as 5,6,7,8,2′,3′,5′-heptahydroxy-4′-methoxyflavanone (punicaflavanol) and 5,6,7,8,2′,5′-hexahydroxy-4′-methoxyflavanone-7-β-D-xylopyranoside (granatumflavanyl xyloside) on the basis of spectral data analyses and chemical reactions.
