Complex compounds of thorium oxalate with ammonium oxalate

The system thorium oxalate-ammonium oxalate-water has been investigated by physico-chemical methods. A new procedure is adopted in preparing the solution for these studies by the mono-variation method. Data have been presented to prove the existence of two complexes in solution from measurements of electrical resistance, pH and relative viscosity.     

Microwave spectrum,barrier to internal methyl rotation,dipole moment,and partial structure of dimethylketene

From the microwave spectrum of dimethylketene which has been recorded from 8 to 37 GHz, the following rotational constants were derived: A = 8 267.832 ± 0.8, B = 3 884.101 ± 0.03, C = 2 728.826 + 0.03 MHz. The dipole moment is μ_a = 1.94 ± 0.01 D. Substitution coordinates for all methyl group atoms have been obtained by investigating the spectra of six isotopic species of the molecule. The potential barrier V₃ hindering internal rotation of the methyl tops has been fitted to the multiplet width of a number of high-J ground state ^aQ-transitions which were observed as triplets. V₃ is 2065 cal/mole, keeping fixed I_α = 3.132 amu Ų and angle (methyl-top to a-axis) = 58.94° as obtained from the partial substitution studies.     

Bromamine-T as a new oxidimetric titrant

A new oxidimetric titrant, bromamine-T (sodium salt of N-bromo-p-toluene sulphonamide), is introduced for use in aqueous medium. Direct potentiometric and visual indicator titration methods as well as back-titration procedures have been developed for the determination of a variety of substances.     

Cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN)-mediated sulfonylation of styrenes: some interesting observations

Sulfonyl radicals generated by the oxidation of sodium arylsulfinates with cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN) undergo addition reaction with styrenes to give the sulfonylated products in good yields.     

Geomagnetic plasma probe for solar wind

Magnetograms from Alibag reveal that the range Δ H of the daily variation of the horizontal component is negatively correlated with the minimum value ΔH_min. during a day. This relationship is largely unaffected by the degree of geomagnetic disturbance and holds good during all phases of the 11-year cycle of solar activity. From the nature of the relationship between ΔH and ΔH_min. it is concluded that the daily variation of the geomagnetic field at a low latitude station outside the influence of the equatorial electroject must be regarded as largely due to a weakening of the ambient field on the night side rather than an enhancement of the field on the day side due to ionospheric currents. There exists a good correlation between (ΔH)² and the kinetic energy density of the solar wind in interplanetary space measured by IMP-1 satellite. It is suggested that ΔH is largely the result of the partial ring currents related to the convective drift of the plasma from the tail of the magnetosphere. Moreover, using the relationships established during the IMP-1 period, the annual mean kinetic energy density of solar wind for geomagnetically quiet days for the past 11-year cycle is estimated, treating the earth as a plasma probe.     

Esr of CaS:Mn2+: A case with zero cubic field splitting

Electron spin resonance studies on powdered samples of CaS:Mn²⁺ and SrS:Mn²⁺ at 300° and 77° K reveal the usual six-line hyperfine structure due to Mn⁵⁵. CaS:Mn²⁺ exhibits additional fine structure satellites which have been analysed on the basis of a near zero cubic field splitting.     

Stark effect measurements in high temperature molecules: Hyperfine structure and stark effect in the rotational spectrum of the silver iodide molecule

In the region of 8 GHz the rotational transition of J = 3 → 2 of both isotopic species of AgI has been investigated. The analysis of the quadrupole hyperfine structure in the vibrational states up to v = 4 resulted in the v-dependent coupling constant

. From observations of the Stark pattern of ¹⁰⁷AgI in its ground vibrational state we derived the electric dipole moment

Neutron-proton interaction and nuclear deformations

In Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations with and without the neutron-proton (n-p) interaction for a few nuclei in the s-d shell and in the rare-earth region it is found that the n-p interaction is the major source of nuclear deformation.
