Gitoxigenin glycosides

Summary Three cardiac glycosides have been synthesized from gitoxigenin and D-glucose: gitoxigenin 3-O--D-glucopyranoside, gitoxigenin 16 -O- -D-glucopyranoside, and gitoxigenin 3, 16-di-O- -D-glucoside. The first glycoside, obtained with a yield of 49% on the weight of the initial aglycone, possesses a fairly high biological activity (0.25 mg/kg), while the other two, formed in a yield of about 0.3%, do not possess the action on the heart that is specific for the cardenolides.Khar'kov Chemical and Pharmaceutical Scientific-Research Institute. Furocoumarins ofCnidium dubium

Summary 1. Paper chromatography has shown that the fruit ofC. dubium contains not less than eight substances of coumarinic nature; six of these (A, B, C, D, E, and H) have been isolated in the crystalline state.2. Substances B, D, and E are identical with isoimperatorin, imperatorin, and oxypeucedanin, respectively. Some properties of substance H have been determined. Prangenin [F] has been detected in the fruit ofC. dubium by paper chromatography.3. Total synthesis of indole and dihydroindole alkaloids. VII. The total synthesis of isovelbanamine, velbanamine, cleavamine, 18beta-carbomethoxycleavamine and catharanthine.

A synthesis of a variety of nine-membered ring intermediates in the cleavaminevelbanamine series is described. The formation of the penultimate intermediate involves a fragmentation reaction in which the cleavamine system is generated from an appropriate rigid pentacyclic Iboga alkaloid derivative. Thus dihydrocatharanthinol tosylate (VIII) on reaction with triethylamine in refluxing benzene undergoes fragmentation to the 5, 18-seco-diene X. This latter substance is then elaborated in various ways to the desired compounds.     

On field desorption mass spectrometry of salts

The types of ion occurring in the field desorption mass spectra of inorganic and organic salts are discussed. In contrast to general experience with field desorption mass spectrometry molecular ions are either absent or of low intensity. The energetically and kindetically favoured process of cluster formation, however, generates ions from which the molecular structure can be easily derved. Some specific aspects for the analyses of salts by field desrption mass spectrometry are outlined.     

Die Bildungsenthalpien einiger Siliciumtetrahalogenid—Pyridin-Addukte

The enthalpies of formation of the addition compounds F₄Si(py)₂, Cl₄Si(py)₂, Br₄Si(py)₂ and I₄Si(py)₄ have been measured calorimetrically by two different ways (see table 1). It was not possible to confirm enthalpy data published in^{7, 8}. The sequence SiF₄4～SiBr₄>SiI₄(?) is proposed for the acceptor power of the silicon tetrahalides towards pyridine.     

Coulometric titration of acids in non-aqueous solvents

Coulometric titrations of mineral acids, sulphonic acids, carboxylic acids, enols, imides and phenols have been carried out in t-butanol or in acetone with electrically generated tetrabutylammonium hydroxide. Either a potentiometric titration or a visual indicator end-point may be used. The amount of acid titrated ranges from 10 to 60 muequiv, and the precision and accuracy of the method are excellent.     

Locating the more acidic hydroxyl group on dihydroxy compounds o,o'-dihydroxyazo-dye metal-ion indicators

In o,o'-dihydroxyazo-dye metal-ion indicators, one hydroxyl group is 10(4) times more acidic than the other. The location of the more acidic group has been a mystery. By methylation of the acidic group, reduction of the monomethylated compound, isolation and characterization of the split methoxyamine and hydroxyamine, the location of the acidic group has been established. Indicators examined include Calmagite, Eriochrome Black T, Eriochrome Blue Black R and 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol (PAR).     

Die Kristallstruktur von Zr2Al und Hf2Al

Zusammenfassung Im Zweistoff: Zr–Al bzw. Hf–Al werden zwei neue Kristallarten Zr₂Al und Hf₂Al mit CuAl₂-Struktur nachgewiesen; die Parameter sind:a=6,840 bzw. 6,76₂ undc=5,49₀ bzw. 5,37₄ kX·E. In den Dreistoffen: Zr–Al–Si und Hf–Al–Si besteht jeweils ein lückenloser Übergang zwischen den isotypen Phasen Zr₂Al und Zr₂Si bzw. Hf₂Al und Hf₂Si.     

Kryoskopische Bestimmung der Aktivitätskoeffizienten von Nichtelektrolytmischungen

Zusammenfassung Es wurde eine Methode entwickelt, welche die Aufnahme von Schmelzkurven von binären Nichtelektrolytmischungen mit einer Genauigkeit von 0,001° (und dementsprechend von etwa 0,00001 im Molenbruch) gestattet. Die Bestimmung der Schmelzpunkte erfolgte an Hand von Erwärmungskurven, die bei konstanter Wärmezufuhr mit einem Thermistor aufgenommen wurden.Die Methode wurde auf die Systeme 1,2,4-Trichlorbenzol-(1)-n-Hexan und Anilin-(1)-Cyclohexan angewendet und sollte hier der Überprüfung und Ergänzung der Daten dienen, die früher aus Dampfdruckmessungen¹ und Messungen der Löslichkeitskurve² abgeleitet wurden. Die Übereinstimmung mit den früheren Resultaten ist bei dem System Trichlorbenzol-Hexan ausgezeichnet, bei dem System Anilin-Cyclohexan annehmbar. Die nun genauer zu bestimmenden lnf ₁/x ₂ ² -Kurven (f _i Aktivitätskoeffizient,x _i Molenbruch der Komponentei) zeigen bei dem Übergang von verdünnter zu konzentrierterer Lösung eine plötzliche Änderung, als ob mit Erhöhung der Konzentration der Komponente 2 eine plötzliche Änderung der molekularen Struktur der Lösung einherginge. Dieser Befund steht zwar mit früheren Beobachtungen^1,2 in qualitativer Übereinstimmung, konnte aber bisher nicht so scharf formuliert werden.Mit 11 AbbildungenAuszugsweise vorgetragen auf der Chemiedozententagung der Chemischen Gesellschaft der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik in Halle (Saale) 24.–26. Optical activity in the biaryl series

The relationship between the CD spectra of the chiral biaryls and their stereochemical configuration, as a function of the dihedral angle between the molecular planes of the aromatic moieties, has been investigated for biphenyl, 1,1′-binaphthyl, 1,1′-bianthryl and 9,9′-bianthryl in the exciton approximation and, for the 1,1′-binaphthyls, in the π-SCF approximation. Both methods provide unambiguous assignments of absolute configuration except for biaryls with a critical dihedral angle of π/2 in those with effective D_data2 chromophoric symmetry, or 100–110° in the case of the 1,1′-binaphthyls.
