Ion-molecule reactions of 2-methoxyethanol with some amines, carboxylic acids and amino acids under chemical ionization conditions

2-Methoxyethanol chemical ionization of amines, carboxylic acids and amino acids has been found to produce numerous adduct ions. The most intense adduct ions for amines are [M + H](+) and [M + 77](+), for carboxylic acids [M + 27](+), [M + 59](+) and [M + 77](+), and for amino acids [M + H](+), [M + 13](+), [M + 27](+) and [M + 77](+). Either the adduct ion [M + H](+) or [M + 77](+) was the most abundant ion found for amino acids. The proton affinities of amino acids are noticed to control the formation of the [M + H](+) and [M + 77](+) ions. The relative abundance of [M + 13](+) and [M + 27](+) ions varied for different amino acids being most intense for phenylalanine and aspartic acid. Copyright 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Status of electroweak phase transition and baryogenesis

I review recent progress on the electroweak phase transition and baryogenesis, focusing on the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model as the source of new physics.     

Laser generation of convergent acoustic waves for materials inspection

A laser technique for generating convergent acoustic waves is described. The optically probed Rayleigh wave in the centre of convergence shows an amplification factor of the order of 20 with respect to a collimated surface wave. Applications to the ultrasonic characterization of layered materials and to crack detection are described.     

New β-linked pyrrole monomers: approaches to highly stable and conductive electrochromic polymers

An efficient synthetic route to β-linked dipyrrole monomers has been developed. Electrochemical polymerization of these monomers leads to the incorporation of polycyclic aromatic residues into a polymer backbone. The resulting conjugated polymer films are electroactive, robust electrochromic materials that are highly delocalized in their oxidized forms.     

ON THE SOURCE OF THE OSCILLATIONS OBSERVED DURING in vivo ZINC PHTHALOCYANINE FLUORESCENCE PHARMACOKINETIC MEASUREMENTS IN MICE

Surface-detected fluorescence spectroscopy can be used to monitor the pharmacokinetics of uptake and clearance of red-absorbing fluorophores such as zinc(II) phthalocyanine (ZnPc) in vivo. When this technique is applied to mice that have been fed on a normal chlorophyll-based diet, and particularly when measurements are performed in the abdominal region, oscillations are sometimes observed superimposed on the pharmacokinetic curve of the ZnPc. An oscillatory signal has also been observed arising from the abdominal region of control mice fed a normal diet but not injected with the ZnPc photosensitizer; this oscillatory component to the signal is reduced when mice are fed a chlorophyll-free diet. The oscillatory signal component has been attributed to fluorescence arising from chlorophyll derivatives (pheophorbide/pheophytin) contained in the rodent food, whose concentration in the measured abdominal region changes substantially with time, presumably due to digestive processes. Thus it is important to be aware of the possibility of such artifactual contributions to in vivo fluorescence pharmacokinetic measurements.
