Crystal Structure of the Intermetallic Thin-Film Cu–Sn Condensate

The synthesis of intermetallic compounds in multilayer Cu–Sn films is confined within reaction islands, which can attain 100 nm in size. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals the predominance of one intermetallic Cu₆Sn₅ phase, while electron microscopy evidences a high crystallographic orientation of its islands. They have the same orientation to the film surface, but are rotated with respect to each other at different angles and randomly oriented to the axis, which is perpendicular to the film plane and coincide with the crystallographic axis [100] of individual single crystals.     

Synthesis and Some Biological Properties of Pyrrolo[1,2‐a]indoles

The procedures for the synthesis of substituted pyrrolo[1,2‐a]indoles and some of their biological properties are reviewed.     

Secondary material resources of oil-producing plants

Different ways for utilization of by-products from the production of sunflower, soybean, linseed, and rapeseed oil in Russia are reviewed. Different options of using sunflower press cakes as sorbents, in the production of feedstuffs for animals, in the construction industry, and energy industry are described. Examples of application of oil meal in the food industry and feedstuff production, especially in the production of protein isolates and concentrates, mayonnaise, and enriched bread are described. Prospects for oil meal application in biotechnology are also given.     

Adhesion-strong polymeric layers on polyethylene terephthalate films modified by irradiation with accelerated electrons

Regular trends in variation of the functional group composition, surface energy, and amorphous-crystalline structure of oriented polyethylene terephthalate films modified by irradiation with accelerated electrons to the absorbed dose in the range 25–300 kGy were studied by the methods of surface tension, indicator dye adsorption, and X-ray diffraction. The possibility of preparing gelatin emulsion layers exhibiting high adhesion strength was examined.     

Kinetics and mechanism of the reaction between aquacobalamin and isoniazid

Kinetics of the reaction of aquacobalamin (H₂OCbl) with isoniazid (isonicotinic acid hydrazide, INH) in weakly alkaline, neutral, and weakly acidic media was studied using UV–Vis spectroscopy. It is shown that the reversible formation of a complex more stable than those of cobalamin(III) with pyridine and hydrazine occurs during the reaction. A mechanism of the reaction includes reversible stages of binding a neutral INH molecule by cobalamin(III) through an oxygen atom with its subsequent deprotonation, along with the reversible interaction of H₂OCbl and the negatively charged form of INH.     

Tumor pleural effusion proteome profiling for ovarian cancer biomarkers mining

Mass spectrometric proteome profiling of tumor pleural effusion (TPE) liquid fraction from ovarian cancer patients was performed to identify the potential biomarkers of the disease. The methodology of analysis of the TPE protein composition included the removal of high-abundant proteins by affinity chromatography, additional fractionation of the low-abundant proteins based on their lipophilicity, and high-resolution mass spectrometric analysis. As a result, 190 proteins were indentified, 49% of them belonging to the groups of extracellular and membrane proteins. The application of several criteria to data analysis allowed us to generate a group of 26 proteins that are promising candidates for testing as ovarian cancer biomarkers.     

Evaluation of Free Radical-Scavenging Activity of Sea Urchin Pigments Using HPTLC with Post-Chromatographic Derivatization

Chromatographic separation, analysis of in situ radical-scavenging activity, and quantitative analysis of green sea urchin shell pigments were carried out by online HPTLC-DAD and HPTLC-DPPH methods. Methanol:chloroform:acetic acid:water (11:50:5:2, v/v) was selected as the best mobile phase on silica gel plates for the separation of the pigments. Two pigment spots, S1 and S2, were observed on the TLC plates, while echinochrome A was not detected in the pigment extract of green sea urchin shells. Based on the estimated ID₅₀ values, the antiradical activity was S2 (0.043 μg) > S1 (0.058 μg) > echinochrome A (0.134 μg).
