Lattice model techniques are employed to study the low-energy spectrum of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in 1 + 1 dimensions. The Hamiltonian formulation of Kogut and Susskind is employed. The strong coupling expansion is carried to eighth order for a few of the lower-lying states. These expansions are extrapolated to the continuum limit using Padé approximants, both for finite quark masses and in the non-relativistic limit (quark mass goes to infinity). Simulated synthetic sewage was treated in a laboratory-scale, completely mixed, activated sludge plant. Careful control of flow, loading and sludge recycle allowed the plant to be maintained in an essentially steady-state condition for extended periods. “Lumped parameter” determinations were done to assess the plant operating performance in conventional terms. For comparison, more sophisticated determinations were also applied: molecular weight fractionation, amino acids, ammonium-, nitrate- and nitrite-nitrogen, and carbon and nitrogen in the biomass (sludge). Molecular weight fractionation allowed a better characterization of dissolved carbonaceous pollutants. Samples were initially concentrated by low-temperature vacuum evaporation, followed by fractionation by low-pressure gel chromatography. The leading corrections to finite-size scaling predictions for eigenvalues of the quantum Hamiltonian limit of the critical four-state Potts model are calculated analytically from the Bethe ansatz equations for equivalent eigenstates of a modifiedXXZ chain.
