Kinetics of polarization reversal in irradiated thin PZT films

The effect of irradiation with electrons and neutrons and of exposure to synchrotron radiation on cyclic switching of polarization in thin films of lead zirconate titanate Pb(Zr,Ti)O₃ (PZT) was studied. It is shown that variations in the shape of switching currents are due to the generation of a spatially nonuniform bound internal field with account for an increase in the rate of bulk screening caused by irradiation. A correlation between structural variations and the evolution of the switching current measured during and after irradiation is established.     

Theoretical photoelectronic spectra of molybdenum, tungsten, and rhenium disilicides

Photoelectronic spectra of volume samples of molybdenum, tungsten, and rhenium disilicides are theoretically investigated as functions of the excitation energy (hv = 12–1486 eV) by the method of linearized attached plane waves. The main contribution to the spectrum at low (hv = 12–52 eV) and very high (hv = 1486 eV) excitation energies is given by the metal d-states, while the contribution of the Si p-states is dominant at intermediate excitation energies. An analysis of the calculated results demonstrates that the main peak of the photoelectronic spectra is displaced by 0.2 eV toward the bottom of the valence band when going from MoSi₂ to WSi₂; it is displaced by 0.3 eV when going from WSi₂ to ReSi_1.75. __________ Translated from Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 7, pp. 75–80, July, 2006.

Fabrication of Al nanoparticles and their electrical properties studied by capacitance-voltage measurements

Nanometer-scale Al particles are fabricated and are embedded in a GaAs matrix using molecular beam epitaxial technique. The Al particle is self-assembled on GaAs by supplying an Al molecular beam. The average particle size is found to be 25 nm. The density is 7 × 10¹⁰ cm⁻² when Al of 6.2 × 10¹⁵ atoms/cm² is supplied on (1 0 0)GaAs at a substrate temperature of 300 °C. Clear hysteresis and plateaus in capacitance-voltage (C-V) curves are found in an Al-embedded sample, whereas monotonic increase of capacitance is obtained in a reference sample having an AlAs layer instead of Al. This difference results from trapping of electrons by the Al particles, suggesting that the particles have metallic character.     

Conformational characteristics of polycaproamide in dimethylacetamide containing lithium chloride

The viscosity behavior, index of refraction, and density of dilute polycaproamide solutions in DMAc containing lithium chloride have been studied. On the basis of temperature dependences of the index of refraction and the density of solutions, the θ-condition of polycaproamide solutions in DMAc containing 2.5% lithium chloride is estimated as 21.3°C. From intrinsic viscosity [η] measurements, the coefficients of swelling of a polymer coil, the mean-square distance between chain ends, and other parameters of macromolecules in solution are calculated.     

Current distribution and giant magnetoimpedance in composite wires with helical magnetic anisotropy

The giant magnetoimpedance effect in composite wires consisting of a non-magnetic inner core and soft magnetic shell is studied theoretically. It is assumed that the magnetic shell has a helical anisotropy. The current and field distributions in the composite wire are found by means of a simultaneous solution of Maxwell equations and the Landau–Lifshitz equation. The expressions for the diagonal and off-diagonal impedance are obtained for low and high frequencies. The dependences of the impedance on the anisotropy axis angle and the shell thickness are analyzed. Maximum field sensitivity is shown to correspond to the case of the circular anisotropy in the magnetic shell. It is demonstrated that the optimum shell thickness to obtain maximum impedance ratio is equal to the effective skin depth in the magnetic material.     

The permittivity of polar dielectrics

The best known works on the theory of permittivity of polar dielectrics are considered. Equations are obtained that relate the dipole moment of a molecule in a medium to substance permittivity and can be used in calculations of the polarization characteristics of rarefied gases and condensed polar dielectrics. The polarization characteristics of water are calculated.     

On an evasion problem on a semi-infinite interval for a class of controlled distributed systems

In this paper, we study an evasion problem in systems described by equations of parabolic type. We consider four versions of constraints on the control parameters.
