Elasticity in nanocrystalline Nd2Fe14B+αFe magnetic composites

The dynamic Young modulus (E) of magnetic Nd₂Fe₁₄B+αFe nanocomposites is investigated with mechanical spectroscopy techniques (vibrating reed configuration, f≈1.5 kHz <10⁻⁶). Reduced values of E are obtained (88–152 GPa) as compared with that predicted by the rule of mixtures for the composite (164 GPa). Three contributions to this reduction are briefly discussed: a large volume fraction of the specimen with grain boundary like structure; internal pores, resulting from the high cooling rate during processing (10⁶ K/min) and magneto-mechanical effects. Even when porosity is identified as the principal cause of modulus reduction, magnetic effects are also detected.     

Structural transition of the human lymphocyte plasma membrane: an ESR approach

Summary The electron spin resonance spectroscopy and the spin label technique have been used to study the thermotropic structural transition of the plasma membrane ofin toto human peripheral blood lymphocytes in the temperature range (25÷41)°C. A discontinuity in the plot probe order parametervs. temperature, at a temperature of about 31°C, is observed. This discontinuity is upward shifted to a temperature of 35°C in the presence of staphylococcal enterotoxinB and is no longer observed when using isolated plasma membrane. These results are interpreted as being due to a change in the structural properties of the lipid phase of plasma membrane during the activation of the lymphocyte cells.     

New fir laser lines and frequency measurements from optically pumped13CD3OH3

We report the discovery of 57 new fir laser lines from¹³CD₃OH molecule optically pumped by a waveguide CO₂ laser of 300 MHz tunability. For all lines, precise frequency offset measurements between the CO₂ line center and the center of the absorbing¹³CD₃OH line were performed using the transferred Lamb-Dip technique. We have also measured directly the frequency of seven FIR laser lines by heterodyning with already known laser lines. We present a complete list of all known laser lines (134) and frequency measurements (24) for this molecule.Work supported by CNPq, FAPESP, FAEP-Brasil, and CNR-Italia     

Two-dimensional Numerical Simulation of the Beam-Plasma-Discharge

A two-dimensional self consistent model of the Beam-Plasma-Discharge (BPD) has been developed to calculate the discharge ignition of a bandlike electron beam in a discharge chamber. The discharge was considered in Argon with an initial concentration of 10¹⁴ cm^?3. The model allows calculation of the time evolution of perpendicular profiles of electron density, temperature and the potential.     

Growth properties for solutions of differential equations defined in the disk

Summary We investigate the growth of solutions of a class of differential equations which are defined in the unit disk and for which the coefficients have slow growth in the unit disk as measured by the Nevanlinna characteristic. These results extend earlier work of S. Bank.     

Study of the reciprocal space image of the biaxial nematic phase in the plane of the amphiphilic bilayer

High resolution synchrotron X-ray measurements have been performed on the uniaxial and biaxial phases of the lyotropic mixture potassuim laurate, decanol and water. An elegant magnetic orientational procedure allows us to obtain the cut of the reciprocal space image of the biaxial phase at the plane perpendicular to the amphiphilic bilayer. The analysis of densitometric profiles of the diffracted bands indicate an anisotropic micellar correlation in the plane of the amphiphilic bilayer. It is suggested that an anisotropic distribution of decanol and potassium laurate in this plane could be responsible for this effect.     

Kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of indigo carmine by hypohalites

Kinetics of oxidation of indigo carmine (IC) by sodium hypohalites, NaOX (X ? Cl or Br), in alkaline buffer of pH 9–11 has been studied spectrophotometrically at λ = 610 nm. The experimental rate law obtained is ?d[IC]/dt = k[OX^?][IC][OH^?]^x where x <1. Variation of ionic strength or dielectric constant of the medium had no effect on the reaction rate while the addition of halide ions slightly retarded the rate. A most plausible mechanism proposed on the basis of experimental results involves the formation of isatin sulphonate which undergoes further oxidation to anthranilate. Activation parameters have been evaluated.     

Axisymmetric excitation of a dielectric torus: Numerical solution

The article considers the mathematical model of a lens antenna in the shape of a homogeneous dielectric torus excited by an axial magnetic dipole. The boundary-value problem for an elliptical differential equation is posed and reduced by the fundamental solution method to an integral equation of 2nd kind over the torus section. A numerical algorithm is proposed, and the numerical results are compared with experimental findings.
