Infrared intensities of the fundamental vibrations of liquid H2O

Infrared absorption intensities of the fundamental vibrations of liquid H₂O have been obtained by measuring transmissions at two sample thicknesses (about 9 and 0.9 μ). The effect of multiple internal reflections on the observed absorptions is examined in terms of thin-film optics. It is shown that this simple method yields precise absorption intensities, without corrections for the effects of multiple internal reflections. The resulting intensities are 89.9 × 10³ cm/mmol and 5.91 × 10³ cm/mmol for the stretching and bending vibrations, respectively. The latter value was estimated after eliminating the absorption of intermolecular vibrations from the 1400–2400 cm^-1 region by means of computer simulation.     

Congruence classes of Frenet curves in complex quadrics

Congruent classes of Frenet curves of order 2 in the complex quadric are studied, obtaining that each congruence class is a level set of a family of certain smooth functions, that are generalizations of isoparametric functions on the unit sphere in the tangent space of the complex quadric.     

Growth process of TiC clusters from Ti nanoparticles with evaporated carbon layer

Titanium carbide formation by the solid–solid reaction on the surface of Ti nanoparticles was studied in situ using a high-resolution transmission electron microscope with a heating stage. The cross-sectional image of the Ti surface was clearly observed. Vacuum-deposited carbon covered the whole the surface of Ti nanoparticles in spite of the partly evaporation on the nanoparticle surface. The diffusion of the carbon atoms inside the Ti nanoparticles depended on the size of the nanoparticles. When the Ti nanoparticle diameter was less than 30 nm, carbon atoms diffused into the Ti nanoparticle and formed TiC. The superstructure of the Ti nanoparticles was observed, which revealed the growth process of TiC to be the diffusion of carbon atoms. For Ti nanoparticles with diameter larger than 30 nm it was observed that diffusion of Ti atoms into the carbon layer was dominant, which resulted in formation of TiC in the carbon layer at the surface of Ti nanoparticles.     

A cohomological characterization of Alexander schemes

Vistoli defined Alexander schemes in [19], which behave like smooth varieties from the viewpoint of intersection theory with Q-coefficients. In this paper, we will affirmatively answer Vistoli’s conjecture that Alexander property is Zariski local. The main tool is the abelian category of bivariant sheaves, and we will spend most of our time for proving basic properties of this category. We show that a scheme is Alexander if and only if all the first cohomology groups of bivariant sheaves vanish, which is an analogy of Serre’s theorem, which says that a scheme is affine if and only if all the first cohomology groups of quasi-coherent sheaves vanish. Serre’s theorem implies that the union of affine closed subschemes is again affine. Mimicking the proof line by line, we will prove that the union of Alexander open subschemes is again Alexander. Hypergeometric Polynomials and Integer Programming

We examine connections between A-hypergeometric differential equations and the theory of integer programming. In the first part, we develop a hypergeometric sensitivity analysis for small variations of constraint constants with creation operators and b-functions. In the second part, we study the indicial polynomial (b-function) along the hyperplane xi=0 via a correspondence between the optimal value of an integer programming problem and the roots of the indicial polynomial. Gröbner bases are used to prove theorems and give counter examples.
