Synthesis and Structure of Some Aryl-substituted Thiiranes

A number of aryl-substituted 1,2-chlorohydrins was prepared by treating 1,2-epoxy-3-chlororopane with arylmagnesium bromide. The reaction of the aryl-substituted 1,2-chlorohydrins with sodium hydroxide solution furnished the corresponding oxiranes, the key compounds in the synthesis of a number of previously unknown thiiranes.     

Ultrasonic determination of the modulus of elasticity of heat-treated thermosets

The results of an ultrasonic investigation of the modulus of elasticity of K-18-2-TsS and K-18-22 phenolics, before and after heat treatment, are examined.     

Free-radical addition of carbon tetrachloride and chloroform to unsaturated epoxy compounds

A calorimetric study of lead-thallium alloys

Heat capacity is studied in alloys of the system lead-thallium over the concentration range from pure lead to pure thallium. The alloys were studied after various thermal processing. On the basis of calorimetric and physicochemical properties it is established that in this system there are formed inter metallic compounds with compositions Tl₇Pb, Tl₃Pb, Tl₅Pb₃.Translated from Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 1, pp. 11–14, January, 1976.     

Improving the strength of plastics by vacuum molding

An account is given of a completely new method of processing thermosets by molding them under vacuum. The authors' vacuum-molding equipment is briefly described. Data on the compressive, tensile, static bending and impact strength of vacuum-molded specimens are given. These indicate that in every respect the strength of vacuum-molded materials is considerably superior to that of plastics molded in the usual way (in the atmosphere).Mekhanika Polimerov, Vol. 2, No. 5, pp. 722–727, 1966     

An averaging principle for a class of systems of differential equations with deviating argument

The ratio of the length of the unit circle to the area of the unit disc in Minkowski planes

In their paper ``An Introduction to Finsler Geometry,' J. C. Alvarez and C. Duran asked if there are other Minkowski planes besides the Euclidean for which the ratio of the Minkowski length of the unit ``circle' to the Holmes-Thompson area of the unit disc equals 2. In this paper we show that this ratio is greater than 2, and that the ratio 2 is achieved only for Minkowski planes that are affine equivalent to the Euclidean plane. In other words, the ratio is 2 only when the unit ``circle' is an ellipse.

     

Weakly compact homomorphisms of regular Banach algebras

Let A be a uniformly regular Ditkin algebra. It is shown that every weakly compact homomorphism of A into a Banach algebra is finite-dimensional.     

Conformational Dynamics of Poly(acrylic acid)-Bovine Serum Albumin Polycomplexes at Different pH Conditions

This work presents the real time surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and fluorescence spectroscopy observation of cooperative interactions between aggregate-forming bovine serum albumin (BSA) and oppositely charged linear macromolecule poly(acrylic) acid (PAA). Interactions between protein and polymer result in formation of polyelectrolyte-protein polycomplexes, which exhibit expressed conformational transformations, especially at low pH. The rate constants of observed kinetic transformations were calculated and found to vary in the range from 0.8 × 10⁻³ to 6.7 × 10⁻³ for different pH values. The processes of aggregation, sedimentation and conformation of BSA-PAA complex are discussed.
